The Song Fight Bulletin Board

Anyone have any experience with Apple's Logic Studio Pro? I'm basically starting over with my home studio and have heard good things about this software, but haven't talked to anyone who actually uses it. Any feedback you can give would be appreciated.

I've never used Logic so I can't give you any specific feedback on it, but I have what I hope is useful advice anyway. I think all the major DAWs are at a stage now where whichever one is best for you is going to depend more on workflow/ease-of-use than specific features. So if I were starting from scratch right now, I think the best thing to do would be to write a song using each one in turn (using demo versions or *ahem* 'unofficial releases'), then go with whichever you personally find more intuitive and easy to use.

I use Logic Studio Pro. They finally flattened the interface into a single screen and that's really great because it sucked before. And its really nice now. The sample library and softsynths are quite nice. Another thing that they nailed is management of multiple takes on the same track. Also, effects are quite nice, but the advanced reverb, while totally awesome, requires quite a bit of processing power. For that there's the freeze features which are awesomely accommodating, turning a heavily-affected track into a simple temporary wave for playback. You can edit the track at any time and re-freeze.

Something I haven't figured out yet is copy/paste of sections with time sig changes. This has always confused me and I just haven't dedicated the effort. When I just do it I don't get what I expect. Now that I think about it, though, I'm not sure I've tried since the upgrade. I'll get back to you about this.

The main area lacking is in audio wave editing, which has normalize, reverse and all the basics but it's not real robust.

Exactly. However you can "test-run" softwares, or work with someone else on their system to see their tricks, etc. would help evaluate things. i tend to figure out what I need, and I imagine most system would be capable. It comes down to which is best at what you need, as Obs points out.

I use Logic Studio and I love it. I liked Logic 7 a lot and Studio completely blows it away. Its rapid comping functionality is great, and I also love a lot of the softsynths and loop packs that come with it.

There is a video podcast, "Logic Studio QuickTips," which is extremely helpful when it comes to wrangling the UI (which is a little weird in some places and very different from previous versions of Logic, but extremely effective once you know about a few cute fiddly details) as well as a few other nifty tips and tricks.

Here's a nice collection of video tutorials for Logic Studio. They vary in quality but some very useful tips. When you like one of them, look up others by the same source on YouTube.
