Whale
by Ross Durand
Well we sailed away from New Brunswick Towne
Headed for the open sea
Lookin’ for to bring in just one big whale
And buy that ring for thee - for thee
To buy that ring for thee
Well I know you don’t need no diamond
Just a simple band would do
But I’m headed to sea for that one big catch
I’ll get that ring for you - for you
I’ll get that ring for you
We were two days out when the crow’s nest called
“To the ready, mates, thar she blows”
We were bearing down when the storm came up
And the winds began to blow
The winds began to blow
We were blown up north to the Greenland sea
When that spout again we did see
With our sights on the whale but our hearts back home
Too far my dear from thee - from thee
Too far my dear from thee
Well the ice-filled sea made the hull boards creak
And the whale went down beneath
It was all we could do to turn her around
And sail back here to thee - to thee
And sail back here to thee
Now we’re sailin’ in with an empty hand
There’ll be no gold to see
And I see in your eyes as I return
I’ve been too long from thee - from thee
I ‘ve been too long from thee
Well we sailed away from New Brunsick towne
Headed for the open sea
I was lookin’ for the riches to steal our heart
But that whale stole you from me - from me
That whale stole you from me
