Board Censoring

I know word censoring is immensely un-popular to some around here, but looking through the User Control Panel preferences, I noticed that post censoring is something that with the new BB can be turned on or off at the user level. This being the case, I was wondering if we could turn on the swear filter now? Those who don't want things filtered can just turn censoring off in their preferences and others can turn it on if they so desire.

Just a thought...

What's next, bleeping words on songs? Banning UjnCircumcisedHunter because his band name is Vagina? Having Rone Rivendale killed because his name sounds like Bone Driven Male? :P

Well, I for one cannot find where individual users can control their own censor. Somebody point it out to me.

If individual users can control their own censor, why does the SFBB have to have one turned out for everybody?

I don't understand this request.

Oh, I see it now.

Well, if we enabled the general censor, I'd lose all my joke censors. All two of them.

I get what you're saying, KillMeSara, but until there's more of a groundswell of support for a censor in general, I think we'll keep it off. This isn't a terribly vulgar place, in my opinion, recognizing that my opinion has more lenience towards swearing than many. Sometimes it can be a little filthy, but not usually, and I don't consider this to be a place for children in any case. Children don't tend to make songs, and certainly rarely songs I want to listen to. And then they shouldn't be on the Internet unsupervised.

As for adults with more sensitivity to vulgarity, my personal opinion is that swears are not a bad thing. I can be incredibly vulgar without using any swear words at all, I guarantee, so all that a censor does is hide the words that society has labeled as obscene and because of which use of such makes some people uncomfortable. A guy at work once remarked about someone using the "C word". In my mind I was thinking of several C words, but when pressed he said the word he meant was "crap". Do you want "crap" to be filtered? Some people do.

But isn't "crap" really just "shit"? What's the difference between "crap" and "shit" aside from some artifical distinction forced upon us by our culture that indicates one to be more vulgar than the other. I recognize that distinction, and think that poo is poo and it's all pretty gross no matter what word you use but the fact that "shit" is more "vulgar" means I'm going to want to say "shit" more often than I say "crap" unless I'm in front of my mother. I feel it too. But I don't like it.

I think that I'd rather my conversation not be restricted, that I don't even have to *think* about that very much aside from how best to make a point without driving away my audience. I feel aggravated at the thought that what I type may be altered without my knowledge in order to make a lowest-common-denominator sensibility comfortable.

Plus I'd lose my joke censors, which alter YOUR language without your knowledge in order to amuse, well, me. This paradox is why I am a complicated, interesting man whom all the ladies want to fuck, screw, pork, er, "do".

It's just a way to express yourself in times of urgent need. When you smack your thumb with a hammer you aren't gonna yell out "Darn!" or "Fudge!"

When I was younger (teen years) and used to come online, I had a running joke when ppl used alot of vulgar words in chat rooms I frequant'd. "It's not polite to fucking cuss!" And that used to crack me up. Now I find it pretty stupid.

In other words, only little kids giggle at cuss words. Adults use them because it's the only way to express how you feel sometimes. Filters are lame.

I stopped checking when I realized my thread had turned into a "hey look, this guy would not rather read swears, let's see how many of them we can squeeze in" joke. I respect everyone's comments. I believe very passionately about people's rights to free speech and the suggestion I made wouldn't have any affect on anyone who was opposed to it, it would simply clean things up a bit for me and anyone else who wanted to have it on. It's like Google Images Safe Search, just because it's there, doesn't mean you have to use it.

I wish there was a way for users to enter their own words to censor. That would be a good mod.

Yes, that would be ideal. Incidentally it was Mark's signature that first made me think this is something I'd like in response to the "this isn't a very vulgar place" and "only little kids giggle at cuss words" comments.

If I bought a shirt that said "Fuck" and it offended people the people I wore it around, would I be justified in defending myself by saying that I didn't create the shirt? No. Don't hide behind something that stupid.

Kill Me Sarah, the Songfight boards have been like this for many years before you got here. However, I do recognize your name enough to be surprised that you're bringing it up now.

I think it was brought up "now" because KMS discovered that there were some new tools / features available that weren't available before...

You know... I have some friends that are uber Mormon, and they really dislike swearing. I, for one, happen to talk like a sailor. However, out of courtesy and respect for friends, I don't swear around them. Forums should be the same way. I know, sometimes the situation kinda demands it eg: "get the heck off your high horse" just doesn't come across right. Certain words will inevitably be posted online here & there.
The point is- censoring is a way of forcing people who have no courtesy or respect to talk nicely to you. The fact that some people think it's necessary ought to say something to the majority.

If one is using Firefox, then one could download Greasemonkey. Then one could install a profanity filter. There also exist un-censorers for those feeling too coddled by asterisk riddled words.
