How to make more RAM available to your audio apps

If you have >2 giglebytes of ram and are running DAW apps on Windows XP, do yourself a favor and set the /3GB Startup Switch (the link is about Windows Server 2003, but it works for XP too). Setting this switch allows your programs to use up to 3 gigs of memory, which is going to mean more 'VSTi's and less paging. I've got 4gb of ram (even though windows can only "see" 3-point-sumthin' of it), but Cubase would start to vomit all over itself when it got near 1gb of memory usage: setting that flag solved my problems.

Good to know. You tried it with XP?

Well, since I did this I have been experiencing project-destroying crashes with one of my plugins. As soon as I turned this switch off it started working again. So, use at your own risk.

I've had crashes with project destruction twice since I started with my DAW. It's a bummer.
I think I just need a quad core with tons of memory.
......or a mac. :P

By the way, I have two plug-ins that are so heavy that they will crash my porn machine if I use them with any other plugs. I don't need them all the time, but one of them is IQ4gui and I need it when I'm having a hard time separating my kick from my bass. It's a fantastic plug, but I have to use it by itself, export the track using it, then bring it back to the mix and turn off the IQ4. Kind of a pain, but you gotsta do what you gotsta do sometimes.
Also, kudos to Starfinger for the IQ4 link, way back when. I think of him every time I use it.

They're all porn machines. Porn sites just allow us to do other things with them between their spam. :P
