The Song Fight Bulletin Board

DRC: Hey everyone. Today can be best described as uneventful. My writing for the NPCA has been a little slow when in comes to the song for the 2nd chapter. I've thrown away a couple of drafts that weren't up to snuff or were too similiar to the 1st chapter's song. But I'll figure it out soon enough. Listen to enough Bjork & Mars Volta in a day and there's bound to be a spark somewhere. I also created a game to play here on Songfight called "Songfight Connections" (since we've been in a game mood lately) but then realized that you can't attach mp3's with the new board set-up. So that put a minor kibosh on that plan. Maybe I'll post up the game later. See, uneventful.

QotD: Who is the most musically talented person that you know personally (outside of SF)?

qotd: People in my life come and go so my answer is only going to reflect the folks around me at this time.
Jay, my good friend and lead guitarist for both The Funeral Dazies & Ghost Town Gridlock. He struggles a little with rhythm guitar but he has an absolute handle on loose but powerful guitar solos. He's a 'feel good' lead guitarist and he has an uncanny way of writing simple but very catchy tunes. I enjoy working with him greatly and I want to pursue other musical projects with him. (We've talked about doing an album of dark and melodic blues. A cross between portishead, Tom Waits, and psychedelic style stuff)

DRC: Wow is everybody making a big deal about this storm thats heading right for us. It'll be a category 1 hurricane for maybe like 10 minutes before it's nothing but a big bunch of windy rain again. News tends to exaggerate but geez, they're goin' over the top yo.

Some of our customers are already callin' in with requests to change their IVR.

QotD: I work with a guy who used to be the lead guitarist for a local punk band called Cats With Knives. He's pretty talented too. He never learned to play by reading tabs or anything. He just hears a song and starts playing it by ear. He can do pretty much every genre (he's a metalhead for the most part). I bought my 1st electric guitar from him.

DRC: I ordered Summerslam last nite. It was awsome as hell. If you are a casual wrestling fan and you only get to see the t.v. shows and never see a PPV you are missing out. The PPVs remind me why I became a wrestling fan in the first place. There are a few promos scattered around but for the most part the PPVs are about the matches. Not 5 minute t.v. matches either. 10, 15, 20 minute matches. The main event(s) can run closer to 30 minutes even. And last night was no exception. The HIAC match especially was awe inspiring.

I was really impressed at SF Presents @ NYC by roymond. He hadn't really been able to learn the parts ahead of time but he got all of them figured out during one rehearsal. And that's with me not really knowing the notes or even the key of my songs It's too bad I'm not that talented!

Okay, fine . Chris Newman, guitar. Rozz Rezabek's a helluva vocalist & lyricist.

I used to buy pot from Matt Sorum. I've partied with him quite a bit before he got his break. A well deserved break. He was a bad ass drummer when I met him around 7th grade. He was in high school when I was in 7th grade. He was in a local band called Prophecy, and they were way above the talent of the local bands, including mine. The singer/guitar player was a guy name Jeff Harris. Another incredible musician. He started a company called Axe Trax making amps and cabs. I've never tried one, but I hear good things. I should get down to his shop, it's only a mile from me in Lake Forest. Matt pretty much disappeared when he joined the Cult. Not many know that Matt got his first big break touring with Tori Amos. If it wasn't for her taking him out of the small time, he probably wouldn't have gotten where he is. Matt said that himself.

Then there is Marc Seal. He has been a guitar teacher since he was around 18. One of those guitar virtuosos. Plus he's a hell of a nice guy. He has his own show now on one of the local station. It's actually pretty good and I try to watch it every chance I get. I guess I could just Tivo it. My band has played in a few charity gigs with him and his band(s). He's kind of a guitar players guitar player. Nothing really hit worthy, but just an outstanding guitarist.

drc: since Hoblit kind of put the kibosh on writing anything positive or cheery in today's thread, might as well post here. Yesterday I spent all day writing some Powerpoint slides (ugh) for a brief seminar about how to use the [redacted] and [redacted] systems in [redacted]. Today I gave the seminar and it went well, and cleared up some major misunderstandings that [redacted] had about getting [redacted].

Tomorrow I leave on vacation, visiting my parents. Yay! Today I need to:

• Do laundry
• Hope it dries in time to pack enough for my trip
• Do my dishes so I don't come home to a stinky smelly mess
• Finish up two comic updates which I want to get queued up before I leave
• Possibly consider maybe getting a haircut? I dunno

qotd: I dunno, you guys are the only decent musicians I hang out with.

My mom is friends with the guy who did a bunch of TV and movie soundtracks (notably Star Trek and Gilligan's Island)[/url]. I've posted about him before, in some conversation about "selling out" since his view is that yeah it's all well and good if you can do music as a hobby but he actually had to put food on the table.

Also, I took a music history class from this dude who is an excellent jazz musician. I wouldn't call that "personally friends" or anything though.

Also, one of my animation friends (who recently moved to Denver) is a surprisingly-good guitar player. You wouldn't know it by his horrible bland Yamaha PSR-sounding "heavy metal" crap though.
