DRC: What's up guys? I'm off today so I get to lead the herd in a moment of QotD goodness.
QotD: In honor of the Olympics, what is your favorite all time Olympic monent?
For me it's the 1996 U.S. women's gymnastics team taking gold at the very last second. Kerry Strug had a broken ankle but was asked to do the impossible: land a vault cleanly. Something that takes years of practice to do healthy. She hobbled down the path, launched into the air, and landed perfectly for a split second before quickly lifting her foot into the air in pain. Her marks were just good enough to give her team the Gold and she became the most well known 1996 Olympian.

Ummm...you have a slightly distorted view of that moment. Most people do.
"Kerry Strug had a broken ankle".... No. She just hurt it on her first vault.
"Her marks were just good enough to give her team the Gold"....No. At the time, it seemed do or die. If people could've just waited a damn second and checked Moceanu's scores, then they would've known that they already had won the gold.
QotD: Rulon Gardner beats Aleksandr Karelin.

Well, you know, it still sounds heroic, if you ignore the fact that performing despite being in pain is what pretty much every non-baseball-playing athlete is expected to do on a daily basis. I am disappointed, though, because Rone is generally the first guy I turn to when I need an undistorted view of something.
Also, isn't it against the law in the US to cite anything other than that one hockey game back about thirty years ago as your favorite Olympic moment?
(edit: grammar)

Whenever it was that Curling became an Olympic event. That's my Olympic moment.

The Strug moment is still a great inspirational moment.
Why is it that all 3 moments that we've mentioned so far are moments where the US beat the Russians? (other than the Curling comment)

Mine is Greg Louganis knocking his head on the diving board. And probably something with Carl Lewis.

2004 men's gymnastics, when Yang Tae-Young was all "Hey, my routine had a higher difficulty rating than you gave me credit for. I should have gotten a higher score," but the Olympic committee was all "This is technically true, but what's done is done. You should just be happy with the bronze medal. We already gave your gold to America."

Muhammad Ali lighting the flame a few years back. That counts, doesn't it?

This was my most disappointing moment. I tuned in to watch curling and waited for the dickweeds pushing a stone down a frozen bowling alley to hurry up and finish their lame sweeping so I could watch beauticians compete.

Favorite? not sure if this is right, bt it was just so shocking - Zola Budd taking down Mary Decker-Slaney in the 3000 meters in LA in 84.

The Australian Men's 4 x 100m freestyle relay team winning gold in Sydney.
The American's had never lost the event at an Olympics and being complete dickheads, especially Gary Hall Jr, started mouthing off all through the heats how they were going to "smash" the Australian team "like guitars".
Then as Thorpie came from behind and beat Hall Jr to the wall - the other 3 Aust. relay team members started playing air guitar!
Now 8 years later, it was hilarious watching the Seppos carry on last week about how the French were trash talking them. What goes around, comes around you stupid arrogant pricks. You lot started it.

You must be mistaken. USA has never won a Hockey gold medal. The only time the USA has ever won a hockey medal was bronze at LA in 1932.
The gold usually goes to either India, Pakistan, The Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, New Zealand or Australia. Australia are the reigning champions.

qotd: Nancy Kerrigan getting clubbed in the knees during the national qualifiers, the olympic committee feeling sorry for her and letting her go anyway, and then she still lost.

We are talking about the proper Olympics here aren't we? And proper sports that lots of countries actually play. Not silly little regional aberrations.
Germany plays Spain on Saturday for the Gold. Aust. vs The Neth. for bronze.

Should we all do # coversongs again?
Hockey is totally not regional, it's in lots of places around the world, at least those that have decent ice, haha
