The Song Fight Bulletin Board

How about a thread dedicated just to pointing out gems buried in the SongFight! archives? I've been posting these in the "What are you listening to now?" thread, but I think it'd be fun to have a dedicated space for them.

Anyway, I was just enjoying "Snow Fort" by Eight Legged Oedipus. It's got a good beat, melody, and lyric(s?).

Who was Grumpy Ball? I have no idea, but I do think that their one and only entry, "Accelerator" rocks. Check out the awesome shredding guitar solo in particular.

The singer sounds like the guy on some of the Klownhole songs.

Great thread idea. Just yesterday, I was riding in the car with a friend of mine and she asked me to throw in a CD. I had a bunch of CD and all of them unlabeled. The first one I put in was full of old SF songs. I had forgotten just how great Michael Maas' Sincerity Machine was until that moment. An excellent SF Deep Cut.

My music moods change day to day. One day Klownhole, the next Ross Durand. I've got random play lists on my ipod and every so often I'll hear a song that makes me bounce. There's one that I like with the chorus, "that's what she said" with a simple style, like fountains of Wayne, kind of. I normally don't care for clapping, but the clapping is so out of time in spots that I love it, lol. Plus it has horn and acoustic guitar. Any ideas?
I'll try to look it up. I think I've seen that chorus as a title here once.

This is one of several outstanding songs from this fight. Abominominous and Dylan Nau turned in fantastic pieces too.

Wow, great song. I love that guy Roy/Roy Castle/Martin Chitty/etc. I wish he would do more. His cover of "Pancho and Lefty" for the Country/DEVO Cover Fight is really awesome, and is kind of similar in feel to "Red Zero", including the trumpet.

EDIT: Shnap, the link to his cover is dead. Sad. I have it at home, though, so maybe I can get it into the right hands to have it hosted on SongFight or something...

By a very odd coincidence, I just listened to "Across the Dusty Plains" by Farmer in the City and who should it actually be, but the very same Roy/Roy Castle/man of many aliases. And it's also a good one, though a bit short.

Speaking of aliases, it sounds like State Shirt also once went by the name "Caldor", for this entry for "Butterfly Massacre", featuring some typically great instrumentation, melodies, and singing, as well as some screaming that would make Jute Gyte and Mike Patton proud.

Hopefully I'm not posting too much/often here, but I really enjoyed "Dinner for One" by Hostess Mostess. I mostly want to post about it here so I remember to try to learn how to play it later when I'm home. It's a good guytar tune, with nice intricate lyrics.

Ha, I just found the song I mentioned here. That's What She Said. I've never met this Evil E guy, but I like his bouncy style. Sounds like the kind of song that the Ramones would trash, in a good way.

This "Red Skates" entry by "Loose Laces" must really be by High Density, aka Moboid and Future Boy. It's a fun little tune.

Location Location Location's Leaf Blower remains one of my very favourite SF songs of all time. Who's in that band? I know it involves some well-known fighter(s), but I'm not sure who.

Leaf Blower by Location Location Location was my Song Fight debut.

Ken and I wrote the music together at our old rehearsal space, I play rhythm guitar on the track. Ryan from our old band (I don't think he was in the mosswoodians, but I should ask Ken about that) plays bass and backing vocal tracks. The female backing singer is not Erin, but one of those other Berkeley female singers Ken seems to know so many of.

What's the definition of a deep cut?
i really enjoy the goofiness of TV's Kyle's "Baba Ganoush" but I just went to get the link and he actually won... however maybe all songs are deep cuts with the number of songs we have in the archives

Sorry about that. I knew the L,L,L was just Ken & Ryan back in 2004. I had interviewed Ken about it back then:

190. “Brother in Law” by Location, Location, Location

“Oh my, Brother in Law was a collaboration between me and Ryan. He plays the fancy guitar in Mosswoodians. We wanted to get a School of Fish sound on that one. Remember 3 Strange Days? Anyway, we started with drum loops and distorted guitar. Then started writing lyrics. Ryan came up with the basic story about taking your sister's fiance to a strip club before they got married because he was kind of a geek. We then started thinking about how perhaps this was part two of MC Frontalot's Yellow Lasers, as if your sister was the Princess Leia character and the fiance was the good MC. Se we added in some references and MC Frontalot samples. I think that is about it. I guess it could have just as easily been a Freedom Fries song. I originally wanted to call the band Freedom Friends, but decided to keep things simple for the archive.”- Ken Mahru

I had forgotten that you joined up (though I knew that). What I didn't know was that Ryan was on "Control Yourself".

Yup, I just read all 12 of Ryans posts, and apparently he was in the Mosswoodians. I should listen to that band. You may not know that my brother Woody of "Grace of a Car Crash" drumming fame, was roommates with Ryan back in those days. With a name like Mosswoodians, I wonder if Woody is playing drums on the track.

EDIT- nope, just listened to those tracks. I was a little shocked to find out Cancer was an old Song Fight tune.

The stereo version of my "Birds of Our Own" is more fun to listen to, as all the sounds are spread over the spectrum.

I've always loved this song. I made it using some piece of software that was basically an early step sequencer. I had to record the song by looping my Creative soundcard's output through some doohickey that would record it to .wav.

You could set the program to play a whole chord at once, and then move that chord up and down the scale. Everything you hear is the General MIDI soundset of that Creative card. The "song" (if you want to call it that) is actually a performance-- I started recording, and then turned things on and off, and at points moved this little pitch controller up and down. There's no way to ever do this piece the same way again.

The Laurie Anderson quote is there because that song of hers, "Big Science", is about armageddon, and so is my "Birds of Our Own". And I loooooooooooove Laurie Anderson. Hence all the distorted voiceover and repetition in addition to the quote.
