Why Canadian Politics = Awesome

The conservative party posted a video on their website of a puffin taking a shit on Stephane Dion (the leader of the liberal party).

This is the first federal election I can vote for. Who gets my vote? :D

  Vote the puffin! Vote the puffin!
(Puffin?!?! - that's Canadian for "penguin" - isn't it?)

But my New Zealand friends are also heading to an election in November - the Kiwi electioneering is also highly amusing! And best of all - I DON'T HAVE TO VOTE!!! For the first time in my life since I turned 18 - I can completely ignore an election without fear of being fined, as is the go back in Aus.

Yeah, that caught my eye too. Not only do we not get fined, but my polling place serves hot baked cinnamon rolls and sandwiches. :P

You say puffin - I say penguin....they are birds with have evolved to fill sort of exactly the same ecologocal niches - but at opposite ends of the word. It always spins me out how different yet similar they are. (BTW: New Zealand is a great place for ecological niche-fillers. There are no native mammals here - so birds have done all sorts of weird evolving. Shame the Maoris ate all the really cool ones though, like the moa).

And - yep! Voting is compulsory in Australia! I think we are about the only democracy in the world that has that. It cracks me up. They know that no-one really gives a shit about the wankers who run for government. Why would anyone willingly waste time massaging the egos of those jumped-up twerps - when you could go to the beach or the pub or do something useful? So they fine us if we don't do it.

(NB: you only actually have to show up and get your name ticked off. There is no law stopping you from drawing a big, hairy penis on your ballot paper...except that it might be mistaken as being a vote for the Australia First Party)

Yeah, that's really cool stuff, isn't it? I think maybe the biggest difference is that puffins can fly. They're pretty strange looking, too, like little footballs flying about (American footballs that is).

I love puffins! If they started a political party, I would vote for it. :D

I enjoy how an American political debate devolves into name-calling and shouting about health care plans, while a Canadian politics discussion quickly devolves into penguin-talk.

 Guilty as charged.

And yeah, Sober ... I guess that's the whole point of this thread. Canadian politics is simple and nice because nobody really cares enough to get mad at each other over it. Except for the Bloc Quebecois, but they can't win a federal election, so I don't know why they even try.

Did anybody watch the federal debate last night? Steven Harper took a lot of heat, but I think he handled it pretty well.

Did he use his own words? Or is he still channelling Johnny Howard?

Man, that article is biased. But to answer your question, it says his speech writer resigned after that, so I'm guessing they were his words.

Another reason why Canadian Politics = Awesome??? Our election's already finished. Harper wins!

When is the American election?
