I think I found a solution to the issue raised in yesterday's thread.

I'm still alive.

qotd: Are you still alive?

Yes.

Although, I did just learn (about 2 hours ago) that my grandmother passed away two days ago... which was also my daughter's birthday. Strangely, my wife's grandmother passed away on my son's birthday this year. Odd coincidences. Although I'm not subscribing to any relevance for these coincidences, I am happy that I don't have any more kid's birthday's coming up this year.

This past year, we lost three family members to cancer and one to a stroke. In my family, any passing of a family member is sad, and obviously losing someone to cancer (with it's insidious way of wasting a person away before your eyes) is even more difficult. I would have thought that my grandma, at 92, had beat the odds on something like that... but no, she found out she had breast cancer a few months ago. Fucking cancer... it can creep up on you at any time... I feel she deserved to pass on peacefully, but unfortunately it's not up to me.

But hey. Not to put a damper on the fun and games of speculation regarding our egos desires, and whether or not they will be acknowledged on a message board when we move on. (I just watched the movie "Revolver" last night... excellent film... totally not what I expected, and a bit of an eye opener...but that's for another thread isn't it?)

(Actually I have a more reasonable solution in mind. I'll try to code it up when I have some spare time.)

Couldn't you write up bot? Have the bot sign up and post as Fluffy's Ghost after the script determines that you haven't used your computer or logged into the boards in one month's time? Have it start a thread and post a obituary in the form of a poem?

If I was talented that's what I'd do.

And QotD: Yes, I'm still alive for the time being. (Waiting for the inevitable 'Yes, but dead inside' answer.)

Well, no, I was thinking more like a general web service people could use as essentially a web-based dead-man's switch (er, no pun intended). By using an RSS feed which embeds an image (which someone aggregates into their feed reader) then it just automatically gets a "ping" on a regular basis, and if it hasn't gotten a ping for a while it can send an email to the user with a link to click on for "I'm okay" or another one for "I'm not okay" where someone could then post a message about what's going on. And then in the user's RSS feed it'd also embed items for friend relationships, like "Hoblit hasn't pinged us in a week" or "Spud's account says: Spud is okay, he was just in a car accident" or whatever.

(Obviously there'd also be a vacation mode or the like, and you could configure the frequency of "what's up?" emails and the use of the RSS feed wouldn't be mandatory and so on.)

So yeah, that's my idea, and now it's OUT THERE for anyone to steal. Oh well.

Maybe I'll start working on it this weekend. Also I'm registering lifeping.net right now. Heh.

so google is doing some kind of 10th anniversary vintage browser search and you can see your search results from archive.org.

that led me here.

clicking the "post on boards" link actually takes you to the old board, and some of the threads actually work!

pretty funny. before my time even.

Wow, they had "what are you currently listening to" threads and bad band name threads even then.

Did the Experimental Fashion thread still work? I remember that one being the first time that we had a serious debate over 'what constitutes a song' here. And every time that comes up, we still make the same old tired crap arguments.

I'm not sure how he makes it work, but http://nilknarf.net/stuff/dead.htm this guy started an online journal at least ten years ago after getting some bad news from the doctor... I suppose if he doesn't ping some address once a week, it changes to "he might be, we haven't heard from him..." or something...

DRC: we went last night to see the "So You Think You Can Dance" live tour on its pass through Phoenix. Kinda enjoyable (the Mrs. liked the show a lot more than I did, so I got the tickets for her birthday), but the between song patter stuff was very, very Disneyland... I think the audience was about 90% female though, so I had a good enough time... inconspicuously, of course.

No. You are a figment of my imagination.

But I did hear today that the wife of a good friend passed away. Hard to imagine what my mate and his little boys are going though. Very bad news indeed.

Funny, everyone else is trying to get closer to your mom's uterus. But they have to get in line.
