Finally! This shit sandwich of a week is over!
QotD: What's your favorite personal songfight entry? (link appreciated)
I think at this point mine is Radio Ready. This is definitely going on the album. (thanks Andrew and Emily)

Re: Friday! October 17/2008
OK, technically I'm posting 20 minutes early, but what the hell. I am going to shy away from the obvious answer and go with the dark horse: Fax Machine. It is probably my most accomplished mixing job to date. It's practically a re-mix of a song for which there is no base mix. The recording session itself left me with a pile of wavs that were in no way a song of any kind. That's fluffy on the "red bull" (and the beat-boxing), and Barry going insane on the chorus vox. Fortunately, I had recorded Mad Dog (and is that Dita?) chanting the "I owe it all to Alexander Bain" over and over again just to get the tempo and feeling right (you can hear me saying "got it?"), but none of this made any sense when we broke for dinner. I stayed up late into the night tearing the thing apart and knitting it back together until I was happy with the results. The fact that it was a winner was icing on the cake.

All of my favourite songs were all by Tex Beaumont for Nur Ein (Sleeper, Pencil Me In, No One Else, State of Emergency, Unnatural Disaster, The Thing Most Easily Forgotten). Don't know why that is.
My favourite Songfight entry is probably Ninja Gang. I will have to rerecord it one day. Or maybe Les Anchois

Spring Of Teal
It's the only (songfight!) song I've ever done that came out exactly like I wanted it to from start to finish. From an idea to a finished project, it never fell off track and it was exactly as I envisioned it. That's only happened a handful of times and it is the ONLY Songfight! song that has. (Although my Accelerator was pretty close to its mark)
Thanks for askin'

Re: Friday! October 17/2008
My time here at Songfight has been two-fold. There are times where I've made the music and times where I just wrote the words.
When it comes to Niv the Songwriter, it's a very hard choice. I've been so very lucky to work with a lot of great Songfighters.
In fact, let me take a second to say thank you to BLT, Paco, King Arthur, Dre, Plat, Glenn Case, Ken, Merisan, Historyman, Jack Shite, Mico Suadad, Phunt for Friends, Treachjuris, Anti-M, J$, TVIYH, Heuristics Inc, Puce, Noah McLaughlin, Roymond, Luke Henley, Sausage Boy, Zinkline and anyone else who helped me do this crazy music thing I do. You're all awesome.
So, my favorite Songfight song as Niveous, the Songwriter is probably "A Problem of Perspective" by Merisan. My favorite as Niveous, the Musician is "Cute Boots".

qotd: It's a tough call ... I'd like to say this week's In The Tank, just because I finally got a song to sound ballsy. But I think the song that's held up in the long run for me is Ignorance Is Bliss. It's pretty generic when it comes to chords and melody, but I think it was the start of something good when it comes to my songwriting.

Mark: Your Radio Ready was my favorites of that fight. I'd love to mix and produce that song. So many thoughts to give it a hook.
#: I've never heard that song. I'm speechless. If I listened to Octophorpe everyday, my post count would be much lower.
...and yes, that is a good mix.
CR: That Ninja song is funny, but the music kicks ass. Reminds me of something that Billy Childish (no relation) would do in the Milkshakes era.
Hobz: I love it. It has a Primus groove but then breaks into a nice poppy melody on the chorus and a Cal punk bridge. Great elements.
Niv: I like that song. I'm really surprised that you don't do more of your G&G. You have a nice voice. I know G&G doesn't go over big on the mighty SF, but so fucking what. Just do it.
Andrew Reist Clay: I can see why you like that song, I do too. Great warm guitar sound. But you know what I like best, call it the hook if you like, is when you drop your voice low at the end of the chorus. If I were your producer, I'd tell you to try to incorporate that more and more into your songs. It gives it a down home wholesome feel and it gives you a more unique sound that is different from the norm.

Huh. This very second, the favorite is Hiss and Hearse. Even with the stool squeaks. Mix blows, but otherwise it does exactly what I'd wanted. That and I got to pick the title, heh (though I still think "Take Some Prozac and Bone Me" would've been good too).
IRL: Through the magic of our singer's personality and networking, my flailing band "Whoregasm" has finally gotten a gig in January. I think. Opening for MDC, up here in Portland. Life is silly.

QotD: I guess it's still Twenty One, which brought together a rare inspired lyric, songwriting and production in a satisfying package. But Zombie Son is a close 2nd.

Rabz: That is a cool cross roads blues tune. I never drink........wine, lol. I have an effect like that called the grungelizer. I want to use it, but it just stays on the whole time even if I have it for just one part. Which makes sense now that I think about it.
Roy: I REALLY like that song. It really does seem to hit the mark all the way around. It's delivered in a way that I actually see the snapshots as you are describing them.

Yeah, that's Grungelizer, but with the 60Hz hum (or whatever it really is) dialed waaaaaaay back.Billy's Little Trip wrote:...grungelizer. I want to use it, but it just stays on the whole time even if I have it for just one part. Which makes sense now that I think about it.

I'm gonna say at the moment this one is exciting me: Dollar Bill & the Inkpoints - In Bed. I think this one also represents a really nice division of labor between Mr. Cashpoint and myself.
... interesting because many of my favorite songs were for sidefights or SUK or something else, and not for a main SF title!

Re: Friday! October 17/2008
QotD: Hmm. It's hard not to go with Violet Wants it Her Way (with MANY MANY thanks to Mark and Glenn - we should collab again sometime), because that's the one song of mine that gets consistently good comments from people who don't like the rest of my music.
HOWEVER, two weeks after that song, I did an entry for House in my Head that I didn't have as much help on (Eddiebangs did the drums, but everything else on that track is me), and it still came out sounding really good, imo. I remember Blue asking me who mixed it, and being surprised when I told him I'd done the job myself; that's one of my proudest moments since I started doing this.

If I said that it would be a complete and utter lie. It was the first song where you finally let your hair down and just let things happen as they happened, instead of trying to plan everything out like an architect.Spud wrote:Thanks. One detail you missed, though, is that's me playing guitar. Specifically I am playing CABBAGE over and over again.
That is why that is also my favorite Song Fight entry.

QotD: No doubt, my personal favorite, my best song ever, my crown jewel, it's Walking the Border http://www.songfight.org/music/walking_ ... le_wtb.mp3
It has a nice beat, it has (for me) nice guitar, and it has me singing in a non-montone way for once.

Re: Friday! October 17/2008
I've got several favourites - but listening back to them, the only one where my usual bad performance, ungainly lyrics or weird production don't make it too awkard to listen to has to be
Johnny in The Corner's 'We All Need Love'
Jack wrote the lovely tune and mixed it smoothly, I am pretty proud of the lyric (in a deliberately Rolling Stones from the 70s kind of way) it makes a point, it's remarkably honest for me, and has a nice catchy simple melody. Wish I wasn't half-whispering the vocal, but it sounds like a prime example of one of my no time + recording while other half was asleep got in the way=crappier vocal than usual equations. Somehow, despite myself, it works. Which is probably how I'd like to be remembered

Re: Friday! October 17/2008
QotD: Big Disco is my favorite SF submission. I've never had more fun writing and recording a song. I did it on a digital 4-track, which I took outside to record crickets in the backyard. The lyrics were an attempt to be nonsensical, and ended up surprising me by being weirdly relevant. The arrangement fit together in a very 'happy accident' sort of way.
