What vibe do you get from this passenger pigeon tune?

Eating a baked potato and listening to John Herald's "Martha (Last of the Passenger Pigeons)".

Lyrics & mp3 or

There's a way or two to pan this song but I don't care, I like it. (And it makes this potato taste okay because it isn't endangered.)

I wonder how the song goes down with you USA people. The subject is closer home; what about the music - is it too quaint and cheesy or no? What would you actually call this style - country, bluegrass, hippie folk, something more specific...??

I'd say it's more folk. I generally think of any story telling that immortalizes history or historic events in that genre, folk. Although it could be in other genres, too. I don't think it's cheesy in the least.

I like that. Interesting stuff for a song. My feathers was about birds going extinct due to ladies' hats, mostly, and I mention the passenger pigeon in it.

Nice song, roymond, even if not exactly fun. Some muted duck quacks would fit in there I'd say, like a light hi-hat or snare*. The Abominominous version is good too.

I didn't realise hat feather fashion had such an impact. Species going extinct happens, but it's ugly when it's for stupid reasons or bad management.

* I wonder if there are any songs made entirely of animal sound samples, but not the typical silly barnyard cacophony; rather a 'normal' composition, but with whinnying horses for tremolo violins, elephants and seals doing the 'brass' etc.?

Well, not entirely animal sounds, but a healthy dose.

That's cool :) Though the animal sounds don't really carry a melody.

This plugin could maybe do that. Or the soundfonts here; unfortunately the links to demos are dead.
