The daily roll call rolls on.
QotD: Is there a genre of music that you would want to hear more of at songfight?
Do you think SF needs more metal? How about some more rap? Progressive, perhaps? More Country?...

SF doesn't need prescribed genres. I never think "it's too heavy with this" or "too thin in this". It's easy to say there's too much bad rap, but there's the same amount of bad in other genres.

SF's ratio of genres is pretty good, but a lot of it is pretty lo-fi ... that's probably my only gripe with styles at SF. If you're going to enter a song, at least put some effort into it, right? Regardless of what equipment you've got, it can sound decent if you put some effort into it and listen to the advice of the people here.

Re: December 18, 2008
I'd like to hear more music that's weird and experimental, but not so far off the charts it becomes difficult and, for many, unlistenable. Like the Flaming Lips or Sgt. Pepper's, for examples of a good balance. I'd like to see the polished and predictable fly their freak flag, and, to that end, I propose the following collaborations:
Manatee Matinee / Melvin
Tungsten Chic / Todd Mchatton
Chadderandom / Ross
They should collaborate in person and it should be filmed. And turned into the most kickass reality show of the decade. At least I'd watch it.

Yes, I have often said that I like Song Fight best for the experimental possibilities it affords. This isn't goddamn top-40 radio, why not actually do stuff that's fun and interesting instead of trying to make a bunch of non-stop polished turds?
When I think of Song Fight success I think of MC Frontalot and Octothorpe and State Shirt, and I reminisce about NiL and Pricklypears.

QotD: I think it just needs more of anything listenable. Not that I didn't start out with some bad songs or room to grow, but I find a lot of the time when I'm trying to show a (new) friend about Songfight! That the first two entries at random are more of a discouraging factor than positive reinforcement. Actual Country music on the site is also rare. I've heard folks kind of do a country song here and there but nothing ever comes off authentic. (Not since Brick Pig anyway)

Yeah, less obnoxious shit would be nice. (I am sure there are many people who consider my songs to be "obnoxious shit" though.)

....but yeah, like RHCP or better yet, Morphine. << Love that song. Mark Sandman made some great music before his death. Never let anything stand in his way of making awesome music. Not even the lack of two strings on his bass.

Re: December 17, 2008
Okay, so I entered an instrumental for this fight. Sort of. Was working on the NPCA song and suddenly I'm breaking out in bebop.
And now Lulu Molare (one of our two cats, Babylon 5 reference... sort of... the other cat is Londo) hates me... but she'll be famous, in a limited way.
Oh look, BLT posted while I was writing this. Morphine was actually an influence for this latest travesty of mine, heh. Quelle coincidence!

Oh, there's vocals (not human vocals mind you...) but I'm expecting the Songfight SPCA to come knocking on my door as a result of recording this.

Re: December 17, 2008
Writing lyrics about Indian tech support calls while they have one finger on The Button didn't pan out, from the original plan. Bari sax, bass & drums did. A little more upbeat than Morphine's ouvre (my wife's comment was "that'd be better, just a little faster").
Guess I just can't win, heh.
Oh, and dude, don't get your hopes up

Preaching to the choir, my friend, preaching to the choir. (She used to have a recording studio that had quite a few NW notables partaking of the services. Of course, she later got Art arrested, but hey, that's rock & roll ).
What she's doing with me is anyone's guess.
