Demetri Martin Show
I'm really looking forward to this new Comedy Central show coming on Feb 11th, 09. I've seen a few of his stand up gigs. He's entertaining and clever.

Spud, have you seen his stand up? Either way, different stroke and all that.

I guess I just like that kind of humor. Along with guitar and harmonica and props.

Re: Demetri Martin Show
I'm with Spud on this one. And I was kind of familiar with Demetri before. Not sure how he got his own show.
Oh well.

Re: Demetri Martin Show
I hope his new show gets better. It had it's moments, but had a few bits that dragged, like the diamond commercial satire.

Re: Demetri Martin Show
I've come to the conclusion that Demetri Martin would have really shone as a backup guy in a five or six person comedy troupe. He's got some creativity, and I admire his ambition to keep the show theme-based. And I was even impressed by his range of characters (he pretty much never does characters or impressions in his stand-up, so whaddaya know?). He just doesn't have the creativity or charisma to sustain his own show. He's too Kevin McDonald, and not Dave Foley enough.
For the record, I tried to give this show a fair shake. Watched the first twenty minutes or so of it. My overwhelming opinion is that most of his jokes aren't funny (did he honestly think he was being fresh and original when he did the joke about people who drive Hummers?), and in this format, he beats the few funny ones to death. I giggled at the "This is a guy who is way too early for a rave" bit at first, but not when it dragged ON and ON and ON... and definitely not when he brought it back later on in the show. The diamond commercial parody, similarly, was amusing at first, but it just died after the second fake commercial.

Re: Demetri Martin Show
The more I get to know Spud, the more I feel that I should never question his advice.
I agree, Jon. He needs a sidekick or two or I don't think he'll make it with a weekly show. It would be like watching Flight of the Conchords with just Bret. Sure, let Demetri break off to one of his big paper flipping story bits. But only one per episode. AND they need to pop in more of the bits like, where the bird poops on the guy "good timing", then a bird poops on another bird in flight "great timing". Those are the things that made him funny.
But anyway you look at it, just like Flight of the Conchords, it's dry, but fresh and purposely avoids the standards that we've been brainwashed to laugh at.

Re: Demetri Martin Show
Definitely my favorite new show of the last 2 years... pure genius. Demitri's show made me laugh out loud a few times, but it felt like there was a lot of padding. I got sick of diamond commercials and guy who's early for a rave. On the other hand, Flight of the Conchords for me is twenty minutes of almost non-stop chuckles and belly laughs. Demitri needs a friend.Billy's Little Trip wrote: But anyway you look at it, just like Flight of the Conchords, it's dry, but fresh and purposely avoids the standards that we've been brainwashed to laugh at.
