Pi day! (3/14/09)

Hello Song Fight peeps. Today is 3.14. Pi day.
I'm still sick. Also, big congratulations to JB for his thing.
qotd: How many digits of pi do you have memorized? Why? How useful has it been for you?
My answer: 3.14159265358979323846264338, because there was a big poster of it on my math classroom wall in middle school and I was bored. It hasn't been at all useful whatsoever. My rival memorized the first two hundred just so that he could do something better than me. Good for him. [EDIT] somehow I missed the 1 right after the decimal. FIXED. because that is IMPORTANT.
qotd2 for the non math nerds: What's your favorite kind of pie?
My answer: Apple, with the addition of some dried cherries or cranberries for that extra little kick of flavor.

QOTD 2: Chocolate Bourbon Pecan. (this week)

.
That is a stupid question.
There is only one type of pie. It has meat in it.

QotD1: I was going to say eight, but then I realized I've got the sixth one wrong. So five, I guess. Good thing that knowledge is completely useless to me, or I'd have made some major mistakes because of it by now.
QotD 2: I've got a huge sweet tooth, so I'm going to say either banana creme pie, or peanut butter pie. Mmmm. Pie.
When come back bring pie.

My answer: 3.4159265358979323846264338
In that case my answer is more accurate even though I remember less digits: 3.141592654. Frankly, anything more than five or six digits is just math wankery you're never going to need in real life.
qotd2 for the non math nerds: What's your favorite kind of pie?
We've got a sort of milk rice pie that's a speciality in this region. It's awesome.

Obviously I meant 3.14159265358979323846264338. Stupid single-digit typo.

Okay if this is even close I will be impressed. It's been like four years since I've been in high school looking at the poster. I did that from memory and I haven't actually read the thread and I just saw the question and hit reply and went with it. So let me know where I messed up.

Okay, nearly all pie is good, but I eat none of it. Cuz it has too much sugar. Or corn syrup. I remember making pecan pies back in the day. That was fun because you would pour corn syrup out of a bottle, and that's just amazing. If you don't understand, I can't explain it any better. There's something mystical about holding a bottle of such an evil substance and controlling it, like...that sword of corruption or something...what's that called...banjo of consternation?

You must have been beating those chicks off with a stick.
Weird thing is - I could have sworn it was 3.1417. It's 3.1416?
I mean - I use to actually use it a lot. Back in the day, as an engineering student - when I used a simple hand held calculator to do a lot of complex mechanical shit - I used pi a million times a day - and I'm sure it was 3.1417. Has it changed? Is this why I used to fail everything? I always blamed the alcohol.

Hm, 3.14159, that's all I ever needed. Close enough for calculator work.
I like lots of kinds of pie, but I've never had the meat kind.

Yoo Hoo! *
taps mic* Excuse me. Mr original poster? I was wonder if I can have two choices for que O the day 2? I would like to keep my Chocolate Bourbon Pecan pie and raise it one cheesecake. If this is not and option, I'd like to have my original answer changed to Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Cheesecake. I've never had it, but I just know it would be delightful. I'm willing to pay all necessary changing fees.

So as a cooking geek you agree that cheesecake is a pie?

Of course, when I started the thread, this is the comic I had in mind, and I am sad nobody linked to it:

Yes I do. And it still slips my mind when asked what my favorite pie is. BUT, in parts of Europe, they'd say neither are correct and they feel it should only be referred to as a torte.

The distinction between a "pie" and a "torte" is so slim that it had might as well not even exist.

Just as a FYI, according to the wiki article:
a value truncated to 11 decimal places is accurate enough to calculate the circumference of a circle the size of the earth with a precision of a millimeter, and one truncated to 39 decimal places is sufficient to compute the circumference of any circle that fits in the observable universe to a precision comparable to the size of a hydrogen atom.
So, in common use 3.1415927 is more than enough. Unless you're calculating the circumference of the known universe.
