Adam Adamant: You sound like an old man. The tinkling piano threatens to throw something pleasant sounding into the mix here but for me this is too self-pitying, depressing and boring. The guitar tone has an interesting rustic feel to it.

Andrew Reist:
Straight off this kind of hard rock melo-balladeering usually sends me reaching for the nearest Pavement cd with which to wash out my ears, but this is actually a couple of (possibly quite major) tweaks (if there is such a thing as a major tweak) from being almost cool. If one were to Pete-ify this they'd need to tone down the distortion a notch or two, make the mix a bit dryer, add in some more notes - it feels like an eternity waiting for you to play the next chord and it rarely satisfies, and whisper the words instead of the falsetto emoting. However, I guess you're probably quite pleased with the way this turned out so I'm losing faith with the shamelessly subjective approach to reviewing already, must....be....strong.

Ash Kanna: Yay, accapella. kudos for the concept, well pulled off. This sounds pretty schmoove. I'd like to hear you take this approach to all musical styles. It's not just that I'm not big on RnB, but you never hear people beatboxing for rock tunes do you?

Berkeley Social Scene: The left guitar has a really nice tone, the right one sounds like ass by comparison. I like the dual vocalising, some of the lyrics are cool, rhyming musician with decision is a good one. Ultimately the track sort of drifts by like some bar band having a blues jam, nobody's really listening but it sounds quite nice in the background. Hi Bella!

BLT feat. Quimby: I'm sorry that I haven't really got much to say about this apart from that it's pretty good. cool contrast of guitar tones, not a bad song, not too long. good job.

Bourbon Drops: The best song i've heard so far (in the fight that is, not ever, sorry), good words and melody, who is this guy? sounds like a loser.

Charles Cack & His Little Cack Surprise: hahaha, yes. vote. Though it does feel like it should end after 1 minute.

deetak: This sounds part Antony, part Dirty Projectors. Spooky, nice feel. Your backing vocal sounds like a theremin sometimes.

Drew styles: The best way I can think to make this sound cooler would be to make the electric guitar play some repetitive jangly riff rather than jangling around the chords, cos then you'd get that...oh in fact you've started doing it when you turn the distortion on. That works, but when you just double up the chords it feels kind of redundant. yeah, okay.

Jedi spaceship: Cool bass, vox are annoying, drums could be funkier, it sounds like you couldn't find a cowbell so you're hitting a jam jar with a pen.

Jim McCarter: What can I say that's never been said before?

Ka Maua: Sweet, Steve! You da man. This is just like 'Loco Man' from A Mighty Wind, is that what you were going for? either way, it's awesome. vote.

LML: Katie Perrific. Good.

LSK: Hahaha, nice even if it did hurt my ears a bit. thanks for keeping it short, that is in no way a criticism of the song. shall i vote for this......ooooooh, moral dilemma.

MC + LK: One of the more accomplished recordings this week but the kind of Men at Work style white reggae does nothing for me. Functional lyrics.

mc joebuddy: 30 seconds in and I have 2 bits of advice/criticism. 1. I can't see myself enjoying this for over 3 minutes, even if you know your tune is killer try and keep it nearer the 2 minute mark - of course this is all throwaway advice, to be considered but not get too hung up on, but it's always better to have someone say "I listened to this twice it was so good" instead of" I only got halfway through this", anyway 2. kudos for the speedrapping, but you've got plenty of time in this song to draw out your syllables more. You could chop at least a minute of this song, make each line last twice as long and end up with a much more engaging song, possibly.

noah mclaughlin: Usually I worry about listening to your songs cos I have this voice at the back of my mind saying "is he gonna sound like the guy from Creed again?". You've neatly circumnavigated this problem with the french approach which manages to erase a lot of the Creediness from your voice. As a result I quite enjoyed this, I like the drums, it's catchy and has plenty of lyrical verve, even when i read the english translation it looks quite poetic. Good work.

Pacemin Stinkemdown: How much d'you wanna bet I'll get more votes than you? :D This track is sound, but i think you've done better. Also, it's probably the only lyric set I've heard by you that doesn't have some dark twist, or is just outright weird. Strangely disappointing, but still a cut above the mob. I'd have been interested to hear your other ideas.

Pafetic wannabees: Reverb/delay overload, the vocal is clipping pretty consistently, might wanna turn that down. funky tune, nice harmonicating, not really digging the vocal delivery.

paulotteson: Ooh two harmonica tunes in a row. Your voice is really great, it totally makes this from a sonic perspective, kind of makes me think of Bon Iver. the song is good too, possibly one of my faves even, so far. Real good stuff, keeper + vote.

Sky looks pissed: From your self-deprecating I expected this to be shit, maybe that's your cunning plan, lower our expectations enough so that we're pleasantly surprised. This is by far not the worst song here, and the recording and delivery is fine. I like your voice.

south sycamore wheelbarrows factoire: sludgy indie noise death. There is a particularly rhythmic beetle crawling all over the tape, might wanna turn him down. although the singer could no doubt learn a thing or two from him about keeping time. Thanks for being short!

TMK: Me emoting and then breaking up, it's not a break-up song though. Or an atheist anthem, maybe agnostic/pantheist b-side. I'm disappointed I haven't received any kudos for the stylophone solo yet. So that's it from TMK, farewell. Eat Jamie's Pasties!

Toasted sandwich: Ooh, english. word. It's a real sweet song, I dug it from the opening chords and i love the sparse percussion. Backing vox are swell but perhaps a wee bit loud. Nice solo, although I encourage you to enlist the talents of Steve Durand next time. Cool outro, I like the way it layers up and swirls before the fade out. I'd probably keep this but for the scat, I like the concept of scat for comedy purposes but...well, I hate to admit it but i don't want to hear it in a song. there I said it : (
Possible vote.

Wages: This was going along quite nicely until that section with the stabs that starts at 1:07, not a bad section but the 4th chord doesn't work very well, and then after that it sounds a bit like all the sections are in different keys, there are some cool bits. Part of my problem with the recording is that when the tempo is constant you seem to struggle to find a meter to stick to, and then you keep putting in the tempo changes (which I applaud) but it seems to make things even harder for you to sing over and keep it coherent. There's potential here then, but as I've no doubt said before, you could really use a tight rhythm section. Also, sorry for sounding like a pretentious prick with a superiority complex but I can't hear much difference in the quality of your guitar playing than a couple of years ago. I prescribe another 1/2 an hour a day playing guitar. what? you've got work? quit, come one. what's more important? really.....

T'weakest suit: The verse seems to be a bit of a one trick pony but i do like the "Lucas went with Morgan....again" line. haha, good ending. Solid tune then, won't change my life but nae bad.

I made my cover of The Sky Looks Pissed. I kinda did it in my own style, not exactly copying the original. Because I don't really know how to play guitar. Or follow instructions. I also did this is one take after tuning it. I think it turned out cute. Actually, it's awful. But enjoy. http://web.me.com/ameri_star/LML/Latest ... _Song.html If you don't have quicktime go download it already JUH-EEEEZE

Alright with the length issue, I worried about that from the start but couldn't find things to throw out.

You know, you think it's a good idea until you do it and read the review thread, and then your archive page is sullied forever. Like going out one night and waking up the next morning with a Nazi clown tattoo across your stomach.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Not at all sir. Why, only today I received the new Voo 7" in the mail and the A-side clocks in at a very satisfying 2:56 and I think it's arguably the best thing they've done. (listen to Voo)

Hey that's my rig with the sweet sounds being brought out by Mr Lunkhead. I have bass duties (and all the silly vocals) on this one. It sounds like it was. A jam that I took a piece of and threw some vocal melodic ideas over. I particularly like the groove on this. This will suck on a PC listening, it's much better with a system with serious bass, Ken is very pocket on this jam.

Sorry no reviews yet. Between not practicing 1/2 hour a day (he he), work, planning a huge party, and trying to create drums for SOLD OUT, I just haven't found time to listen to this huge fight (although I did listen to LML's track and found your voice to be very nice indeed). I hope to review, but in the event I can't, please hold that flogging!

Thanks for the reviews, especially for accusing me of being ambitious! I never dreamed someone would say that to me for my songwriting! Hope you weren't being sarcastic....

I think this tune could be really good if recorded better. Any post-submission takers? PM me if interested.

Thanks for the feedback, all. Good stuff.

And apologies for the scat. :D I doubt there's a person alive who wakes up thinking 'Gee, I really hope I hear some scat singing today.' This was my first (and probably last, if the gods are merciful) attempt at it - I threw it in mostly because it's something I've never tried, and it seemed just about inappropriate enough to fit the song. And I think I figured out the secret of scat along the way - like the guitar solo, it's one of those things that's almost always more fun to do than to hear, so if you're having trouble getting past it, maybe scatting along will help you through.

I'll try to knock some reviews out before I submit my votes.

I found this comment confusing, songs like what? that sound like an english person, cos you don't need an accent to play guitar and blip over it. Anyway you do have an accent, I'm the one without the accent :) .If you have a lyric that you want to borrow my pitch-imperfect voice for you're more than welcome.

I subscribe to the school of thought that if it doesn't sound kool on two shitty speakers then a bangin system is just for turd polishing. That's not to say your track was a turd btw. And what does "very pocket" mean?

Innit weird how only about half of the people who reviewed were actually in the fight? Thanks for all the comments and shiznet

I sort of agree with you, however I can't hear the bass line at all on any PC I listen to this on. Is the bass line irrelevant to a good song? In our track the guitars are noodling and soloing, while the drums and bass are the back bone of this track in particular. It still might be a turd, but I think you really need to hear the bass and the kick drum to judge it properly.

Pocket = in the pocket, tight, on beat , groovy.

deetak- Tiny Tim meets disneylands haunted house. WE'RE GUNNA MAKE OUT ALL DAY....AFTER IT PUTS THE LOTION ON IT'S SKIN.

Berkeley Social Scene- mid period elvis costello as sung by a 800 pound gorilla. I dig.

Drew Styles & the Blue Velvet Band- intro sounds like the credit music to a movie about a 30 year old woman who can't pick which guy to merry... probably has a fat gay friend. Hear me out: the chorus would sound killer if it was sung by a gang of pirates.

LSK- Sounds like the classic Artless Entanglements track 'dildos, bondage and toys' on the Chunks comp (sst records). So....a good thing?

MC and LK- JAH RASTAFARI. There is a scene in ghost world where a white college kid asks the girls if they 'want to do some reggae'....I am pretty sure he was talking about this. I WAS HERE BUT THEN I DISAPPEAR.

Jim McCarter- hanging with his brother chris. That's rough man.

Ka Maua Hana Punahele- seriously, awesome. I wish there was a cartoon about spin the bottlenose dolphin. He has it set, he is eating fish all day, laughing at the stupid fisherman in that way only dolphins can do KEEKEEKHEEKEEKEEK. Spin is a happy boy and I am a happy boy.

The Sky Looks Pissed- Is that the tv on in the background? What you watching? If the bottle landed on you you would probably freak out and run in the other room and all the football players would point and laugh at you. It's ok, remember, nerds will have revenge.

The Bourbon Drops- all i see is sun's dancing wearing sunglasses.

Jedi Spaceship-I like that for a quarter of the song all instruments decided that they were all to stoned to function and that they should really get far out. Straight to the moon. You don't need to play together if the music that is beamed between your minds through forces unknown is on track. The rest of the song is sitting at about a 5 intensity wise....push it to 11 and sound like mental patients with nothing to live for and it would be a sweet jam.

Ash Kanna- It was a shame when Lynne Thigpen passed away....I thought rockapella would be done for.

LML- Cold Wave meets 50's teen party games. I like it....should be even more deadpan. That girl on girl vanilla lip gloss line is very Katy Perry ain't it?

Andrew Reist- During the intro I thought it was going to bust into some gnarly thrash and I was going to be forced to stage dive off my desk. Instead you decided to sing deep in a cavern. That's cool, go for the evil troll/meatloaf as the beast aesthetic.

Billy's Little Trip featuring Quimby- more oingo boingo and less singing. Cool instrument sounds.

Paco del Stinko- god, there are a lot of songs to listen to...insert snarky comment here. C+, a passing grade.

South Sycamore Wheelbarrow Factory Ensemble- 4 track revolution maaaaaan. Blow that shit out!!!!!!!! Alas, if you made this 20 years ago you would have a reissue lp out by now on slitbreeze or some other nerd label.

Charles Cack & His Little Cack Surprise- I am surprised by your little cack. This is what more music should sound like on the radio, fun.

mc joebudy- I liked hearing you breath in, or else I would have thought it was a robot.

Adam Adamant- i dunno man. jonathan richman with strings from my grandmas record collection

TOASTED SANDWICH: HOLY HELL! THAT'S THE GUITAR LINE FROM NICO'S 'THESE DAYS'. In the words of vanilla ice "see, bowie's song goes 'ding ding ding dingading ding' and mine goes 'ding ding ding DINGADING DING DING'...there's an extra ding that's different"

Wages- remember when all the singers tried to sound like eddie vedder? now they all sound like this.

The Weakest Suit- hahaha, I love the 'it's like eyes wide shut with 15 year old kids'. Then the quick Jim Carroll Band part was cool without being cheeseball. You should sell it to the next generation of teen movies.

Pathetic Wannabees- Is this one of the 45s of 1984 private press rock/wave that I have to sit and listen to until I unearth an unheard punk gem?

Those Meddling Kids- damn kids. Put down the postal service records and listen to the stooges.

Unfinished reviews, thought I'd post before the results.

Spin the Bottle,

Adam Adamnt- David Bowie! Time takes a cigarette, and puts it in your mouth. I freaking love Bowie. So I’m a sucker for this song, but it’s just not right. You’re a Rock N Roll Suicide : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jg4ekLG9Zo

Andrew Freaking Reist That’s Who-
(Yngwie T-Shirt reference circa 1986)- This is huge. Whenever you do vocal gymnastics, the idea is good but there are some sour notes in the scoops and false ettos. This is so plodding. I dig the solo. This is very cool, totally unexpected for the title.

Ash Kanna- Jud Jud, wah nu wah nu. This is bad ass! Did you say “Do it to me one more time?” This gets a vote. Awesome! I’m jealous, makes my vocal bonanza really look like crap. Well done!

Berkeley Social Scene
- WHY did I have to follow Ash? Damn it! OK so you can all tell, we had a jam. There was 2 hours of grooves and jams and awesome riffs, many instrument switches. I decided to grab this 3:30 from a jam. I really liked Kens drums, I was on bass. It seemed the most friendly to vocals. I wanted to have 3 overlapping vocal parts. I like the melodies, I wish some of the other singers were available to replace my vox, but it was fun for me. Thanks for the reviews so far!

BLT & Quimby- This is very cool. That insane theme park slightly pitchy guitar tone is really catchy! Easy vote.

Bourbondrops
- WTF! BSS needs these sweet sweet vocals! Is it me? Is the space really too dirty and masculine? OK, these guys are wonderful. The song is great, vocals are excellent. It would be OK with me if I never heard that clapping pattern again, seems to be a Tiny Robots thing. I dig the Uke. What’s Lunk doing? Just producing? This clearly gets a vote.

Charles Cack & his Little Cack Surprise
- A freaking 12-bar, with a tuba, whistling and LP scratchiness. If this were 30 seconds I’d like it more. The joke loses its charm quickly. No thanks.

Deetak- I’ve been pretty fascinated with your music and your videos lately. You’re quite a talent. The right song and you’ll knock it out of the park. Have you heard the Dirty Projectors? You’d love them. Jeff Buckley? I don’t believe for a second that you’re not a Jeff Buckley fan. This is pretty great. The song isn’t so great, but it is a good vehicle for your amazing vocals, I have to give you a vote on the merit of that alone.

Drew Styles & the Blue velvet band.
- This band is not very tight. Not a bad song. Catchy chorus. Verse is a bit dull. Way too much vocal reverb for my taste. Guitarist wimped out at the end there. Plenty of room for a ragin solo, but not to be had.

Jedi Spaceship
- This is HUGE! I love the groove. The vocals are OK but mostly incidental to the killer rhythm section. OK what are you doing here? Spacey. Weird interlude, like the dynamic change, wish there was more of a point to it. Pretty freaking cool track! I want to hear more.

Jimmy Carter- Competant playing and singing. Recorded well. I’m terribly bored however. I like your voice. I’d prefer less story and more melodies.

Ka Mua Hana Punahele
- I LOVE this! Here’s a keeper. What’s the translation? This is clearly Durand Durand. Any other Song Fight famous players? This gets a vote. It’s such a Steve melody. Sounds like Ross on slide/ lapsteel. Great singing guys!

Lynette Lewis
- I really hated the 80’s in the 80’s and I hate them now. However like the Faint, I dig this despite my disdain for the 80’s. Feels long (like most 80’s songs). Terrible lyrics. I wish I couldn’t understand them. This is fun, but it won’t get repeated listens, and “around it goes,…nobody knows” is just an awful cliché

LSK- FU

MC & LK
- Reggae. Ick. For reggae to work you really need a super tight and in the pocket bass and drums. That way we can dance while the other tedium takes place. Nice voice. Hate the guitar tone. Really awful terrible lyrics. I can’t make it through the whole thing. Skip ahead.

MC Joe Budy
- If you are to rap please have flow. Next.
