The Song Fight Bulletin Board

5 years ago this week the Hell Yeahs entered our first fight for 'The Spirit World'. I still cringe when I hear that song. You can hear the tears in my singing. And the screaming choruses... I'm so glad we never did that again! I'd love to re-do this one sometime. I can sing it so much better now.

Our 10 year wedding anniversary is tomorrow and we don't have a sitter, so we're either doing nothing or taking the kids with us. Whoo hoo!

Hey Heather - sorry about those votes. I'm sure you actually got some. As I recall, there was a voting malfunction...

Anyway, QOTD, our first song was "Been to China". We had no mixing hardware or software, so it was done live with the casiotone and a Shure 55. Ah, for simpler days.

QOTD: Wedding Song was my first. Very bad recording on a 8 track tape, mixed to a cassette tape, then manipulated on to my computer via duct tape, chewing gum and saliva. I friend flooded and everyone hated me.

Aww, shucks Spud! Thanks! Yes, there was a voting malfunction, and I remember being really discouraged by 0 votes - and hating Josh Woodward, etc. But that was so long ago and I certainly have mellowed out over the whole vote thing. But an apology from Spud will stay with me forever!

QotD: Moscow, Idaho. I was rooting around, looking for some kind of inspiration to get me out of a years-long bout of writer's block. Found SF the day before the deadline, listened to the current fights, and decided I had to participate. Wrote lyrics that afternoon and recorded the song that night. Emailed it out the morning of the due date. I like the song well enough, but the recording was kinda bad. More importantly, I will never be able to thank Song Fight enough for being there when I needed it. Or, a few years after I needed it. Whatever. Thanks guys.

QOTD: I started songfighting with "Clause 5, Sub-Paragraph d)" which was two years ago this month. 73 fights later, I'm still here. As for the song, I love it, which is probably why I continued to songfight. I still usually run through it as a warm-up whenever I sit down to write. As for the version on songfight, I hate it. I still didn't know how to use my recording equipment very well, and for some reason, I left off the last line which is the punchline to the entire song (even though it is written on the lyric sheet I used the night I recorded it). The Idiot Kings did a kick-ass cover of this song that is in the cover archive. I'm looking forward to my third year of songfighting (which will officially start on April 23).

Almost 6 years ago, it was So Aggravating. I still dig it. I wish I knew to take one side of my headphones off when singing. I remember spending many hours learning how to sing "So Aggravating" backwards so I could record it and then reverse it and mix into the chorus...and no one noticed.

Heather & Phil - congrats! We took the kids to our 10th anniversary picnic last year and still enjoyed the champagne.

Congrats on the 10th anniversary, Redmons. And don't feel bad, my son got sick the day before my 10th anniversary, so we spent most of it taking care of him. We had to have our fancy dinner in.

QotD: "I Don't Believe You". I cringe at the production but I do that with most of my songs, but I don't completely hate the song. I used the word "demonology" in my chorus. I'm split on if that was cool or pretentious.

QotD: Well, the first SF song I recorded was Welcome To ___ but I didn't submit it in time. The first one I was offically a part of was Brimming With Tears. I think I had like 4 votes on it.

QotD: Romantic Cheapskate. My first fight, and the first time I was introduced to that SF force which is MC Frontalot. My favorite thing about my RC was that the JBB recorded an amazing version for a Coverfight way back been... Hmmm. The link seems to be broken.

QotD: Hollywood Wax. Hasn't really been long enough to be nostalgic about. I still like it, especially for the amount of time that went into it.

Update on our plans for tomorrow:

Phil and I have decided that since having kids has been such a big and wonderful part of our marriage, we will celebrate that fact by bringing them with. Phil and the kids are going to pick me up at work downtown, then we're going out to dinner and to see Monsters vs. Aliens in 3D.

Hey, it's dinner and a movie, right?

But, we also hope to have an all encompassing celebration sometime in early June for our 10th anniversary/my birthday/Phil's Birthday (All take place in April, but work is really busy and I won't have any free time until June). We hope to go somewhere, anywhere, and stay in a nice hotel - no kids, just us. We'll see how that pans out!

I too had that problem... my first fight (that I entered) was "What We Need More of is Science". I had written a song for "Bad Attraction" but I had latency problems and my song was a huge mess (I totally sympathize with the people in that other thread). So I didn't finish or submit it. WWNMOIS I declined to sing, which was good, and I had samples for words. I like that song, yes ("Science is fun!"). MC Frontalot got 90 times the number of my votes, so yeah.

I'm with Teplin, I can't be nostalgic yet, either. My first entry was "A Scary Thing". 6 votes...a feat I have not yet to improve upon.

Went to Disneyland today with my brother and his family - it was very fun.

QOTD: My first fight was "Gallows Hill" - I think I still feel pretty good about it - in a way it was a pretty good introduction to me. I like the song concept and the build - it was probably a smidge long for this setting. I spent far more time per minute of song on that track than I have more recently, but I have also improved my song recording workflow oodles and oodles.
It was also the last fight by a guy named Josh woodward - who around that time had been winning a lot of fights - anyway - I thought my song was pretty good and still think he may have beat me partly based on the votes he garnered from those who felt they should since it was his last fight.

And now - I will listen to the song and then add an edit.

EDIT: yep - that's all pretty much right - interesting looking back at the list of other artists in that fight "Caravan Leaf" - I had no idea

First fight by myself was House of Hodgman, which I think was lyrically terrible (like all my songs) but had some cool rockin' sections and a pretty sweet passionate solo. All in all though, it was pretty mediocre and poorly executed.

My actual first fight here was Adonai with Jeff Travis Henderson and another fellow. It had some redeeming qualities, but all in all was a pretty poor effort, though we had a great time writing and recording it. I still think the end section has a certain magic to it, though it could have been done way better.

The first fight I entered was Crack In My Heart. Instrumental, not well received, and I voted for myself 5 times at school. All in all, pretty weak.

EDIT: I just checked the thread, and apparently I lied about writing/recording it in 20 minutes. I spent a lot of time on it. I just felt that you guys would think I sucked if I submitted something that bad and didn't offer a disclaimer. Also, it looks like I've been at SF for more than 3 years now. And I still can't win, fancy that.

Heh! That was a great song. Still one of my favourites And with a real live drummer!

I also recall doubling up that week. With a very bizarre little number entered as "The Ducking Stool" - along with Mssrs. Cashpoint and Balham if my memory serves me well.

QotD: "Interesting Times", in August 2008. Looking back on it, I'm mostly happy with the guitar tone (I got my first electric guitar in May or so) and very happy with the time signature mangling I did. The rest is so-so. Unfortunately I managed to lose some of the more important takes and thus would have to spend a considerable amount of time on fixing it if I wanted it on an album. Good thing I'm not planning to do any albums any time soon.
