I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow. Taking the rest of the week off work. This is a more than acceptable trade-off for me, which speaks volumes about my job satisfaction.

Question of the Day: When was the last time you had surgery? What was the procedure? Were there any problems? Did you recover quickly?

Good luck with that, Jon. I've still got three wisdom teeth that should probably come out, but I've been putting it off.

Aside from the kidney stone thing in February, I haven't had any major medical to-dos in a long time.

Well, today I got my first song on SongFight. That's pretty sweet.
I'm also pretty excited that the QoTD is about surgery; the last proper surgery I had was on my testicles. That might sound bad, but it means nothing unless you saw the blood afterwards....

Well... ask an awkward question, get an awkward answer, I guess...

I'll tackle the Qs-O-T-D in order:

When was the last time you had surgery?

At age 16 -- so very nearly half a lifetime ago

What was the procedure?

tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy

Were there any problems?

According to hospital policy, this was considered an out-patient procedure, and apparently they would send you home if you could ingest half a dixie cup [for those from other countries who may not have this unit of measure, it is approximately 1-1/2oz. or 45mL (more info)] of Kool Aid, "without vomiting excessively" (for some reason this phrase sticks in my mind after all these years). Despite my firm belief I was not ready to go home, I also was unable to talk very well, and home I went. There I found (once all the after-effects of the surgery had fully worn off) I was also unable to swallow very well (sometimes not at all). This included the medicine they prescribed me (tylenol+codeine), popsicles, and even water. After 3-4 days and 15-20lbs dropped, I convinced my mom that I needed to go back.

Did you recover quickly?

Not at first, obviously. Back in the hospital, though, they determined I was pretty badly dehydrated, and so hooked me up to an IV for fluids and morphine . By the third day I was eating cheeseburgers.

DRC: Still sick. No recording for me...

QotD: I've only had surgery once (as far as I can remember...) in 2001 I had a laminectomy & a partial discectomy. Fun! Had a herniated disc & pinched nerve. Hurt in a lifting accident. Now I'm not supposed to lift more than 50 lbs for the rest of my life... Fun! L5S1.

Edit: The only thing good about this... was the morphine.

QOTD: If wisdome teeth count, then that's it - I was 18 (24 years ago). I was out that night at a football game helping with the local marching band.

If not - I had my tonsils out in the first grade.

Hernia operation. Had a little mistake at the Ultrasound in prep the day before. Somehow the sweet young nurse got the instructions wrong and ultrasounded my testicles instead of my abdomen. Had to go back and do it again. At least that was just the prep, not the real thing.

My last surgery was also wisdom teeth extraction (at 19). Before that was exposing my upper canines which were impacted in my palate, which came just after draining a cyst on my thyroid (both of those within a few months of each other at 13... that was a shitty year).

drc: Work is going at a peculiar pace. So is life. I turn 31 on Sunday. Eep.

Also, nobody was buying my album so I went ahead and made it so people can stream the whole thing for free (and yes I realize it's trivial to grab the raw mp3s from the player but I'm hoping people will be nice about it).

They started the surgery at a little past 8:00, and I was out by 8:30... I think. I haven't been keeping great track of the time, to be honest. I feel pretty good. I was vaguely conscious through the procedure, but I don't recall feeling of the actual prodding, cutting, and extracting from my mouth. I do recall the music they were playing... Phil Collins. Yeesh. Perhaps that was the most unpleasant part of the whole thing.

My lower lip is swollen and completely numb, but the rest of my face is fine. It's about three hours later, and the sockets where my wisdom teeth used to be are just starting to throb a bit.

They let me bring my laptop, and I'm cogent enough to type here, so all appears to be good.

Did they use a general, or did they use Midazolam (aka Versed)? Midazolam is pretty common for dental procedures; it works by just making you incapable of forming new memories for a while (like the Memento guy). You were probably conscious through the whole thing. Musical memory works differently than episodic memory. The brain is a weird and wonderful thing.

fluffy: I'm not sure what they gave me. I was not completely knocked out, and I have some memory of the procedure, but I don't recall feeling a thing. When I woke up, my lower lip was swollen and completely numb, but the swelling receded after about two and a half hours, and the feeling came back some time within an hour of that. That might have had more to do with the nerves in my lower jaw than with the anesthesia.

The part that I seem to have forgotten to mention is that this is a clinical trial. I'm in observation right now. About four hours out from the surgery, the pain got pretty bad, so I asked for the meds. Looks like I didn't get the placebo, because I started feeling almost 100% better in less than a half hour.

Maybe I should be putting this in a new DRC for today?

my current favourite brain fact is that people assume that one of its greatest funtions is it's perception of the world around it, whereas its actually horrendously inaccurate and seems to get by on guess work almost all of the time (damned good guess work usually though), and the associated complications that arise from this. I got it from an article about phantom feelings, best known being phantom limbs, but most of the article focused on this women who developed a phantom itch on her scalp who at one point scratched through her hair, skin, and freaking skull till she was scratching her brain, and she done that whilst she was asleep.
