A friend of mine is launching a new website called PLUG-IN: The Home Recording Show.
He is Ben Elliot, from Showplace Studios in Dover, NJ. He's a Grammy winning record producer and has worked with big names like Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Sheryl Crow, Days of the New and many many more. He asked me to help promote the launch of the site. I told him all about Song Fight, and that it would be a great place to gain some viewers. You don't have to sign-up or anything to check it out.
I believe thay are going to charge a membership down the road, but if you do sign-up now you get free access for a year. No credit card or BS, just sign in & you're good to go. The actual shows are funny (sometimes a bit corny) and there is a ton of good info & insight into home recording. Lots of tips & tricks from a pro. So check it out, & sign up if you're interested.

Ok I signed up. The web site is pretty, and I guess I have to forgive them for their first episode, but please relay the following information:
1. Shut up about the damned teleportapotty. It's not funny. These guys are way too amused by themselves, and they seem to be assuming a lot about our knowledge of the context of their video.
2. I don't care if the interviewee doesn't like digital things.
3. The theremin *IS* a pitched instrument.
4. His music is almost unlistenable. This is a terrible example to use to show off how to copy regions into a "comp track".
5. He spends time crowing about hating digital, and yet he records onto a computer. There's an awful lot about this guy's opinion. Not sure why he merits it.
6. There are no technical details in the video. It's just like watching somebody else record a track. Not useful or interesting. What's the video for? To really give people information you need to go step-by-step. The bit about delays has no useful details. You have to go to the TUTORIAL to get anything resembling details-- and then there's no step-by-step, and HEY THEY'RE USING PROTOOLS-- I don't use protools, so it would have been nice to know that before I wasted my time.
I guess I sound a little testy, but this site is presented as something that I should want to pay for, with information valuable enough for me to want to actually subscribe to see their content. It's not there yet, not by a damn long shot. They want to do something that they don't seem to posess the skillset to pull off. EDUCATION ISN'T A NO-BRAINER.
Gonna have to give them a D+ on this "episode".

Thanks JB- I agree with just about everything you said, and I'll surely pass it along. Although I don't have anything to do with the show, I have seen some of the upcoming episodes, and there is more actual instructional content down the road. But I disagree about the teleportapotty bit. I told them they should make "I survived the teleportapotty" t-shirts.

I would watch a web-based show featuring JB lambasting other web-based shows.

Since I first posted about PLUG-IN, the guys have added a lot more content. Some interesting and helpful, some, well, rather silly, however they are friends of mine so I am helping to get the word out. So please check it out again, & sign up if you haven't already. Thanks, and Merry Christmas!
