What do you do? Cover someone's song but don't tell them who covered it?

A bunch of people cover one person's songs, but the person who is being covered doesn't find out about it until it's posted.

personally, the whole hxaro idea rubs me the wrong way. it just seems like ripping off someone else's creativity.

Huh? Maybe you don't get the idea, TWS. The idea of a hxaro is that you like someone's work and you praise them by doing a cover of one of their songs. It's a musical gift, not a ripoff.

Are you the guy who hangs out in the comic shop, talking about how everything everyone's buying sucks?

no. i'm usually in and out of the comic shop pretty quickly.
actually, i wish i had the money to collect some of the stuff i see people buying.

as far as hxaro, i think i just have a different opinion of it.
i also don't have a good enough ear to figure out how to play a song just by listening to it, so i don't really know how you would record a hxaro track? i've always wondered about that.

I think you may have misunderstood:

Definition: Hxaro is the custom amongst Kalahari San of creating partnerships between people (who often spend most of their time a great distance apart) cemented by the reciprocal act of giving gifts.

I can't remember who first introduced the idea here. Was it King Arthur? Niveous?

It was me. I had learned about it in college and was so fascinated by the concept I figured why not bring it to Songfight. It's evolved a little from what actual hxaro is but the sentiment is still there (which is what counts).

How actual Hxaro works:
Hxaro exchange is a form of generalized reciprocity (giving and receiving) where people from the each band will have Hxaro, or exchange, partners in other bands with whom they will give gifts. Now you may think, “how is this any different than bartering?” The difference lies in the reasons for giving. The exchanges are not part of any economy, nor are the materials given essential for survival. The basic theme is “I give you something now, and you in return give me something some other time in the future.” Richard B. Lee, Anthropologist, discussed hxaro exchange with a Ju hoan man. Lee asked, “If you gave me a spear and I in return gave you a 3 strings of beads would that be ok?” The man replied, “Yes.” “Two Strings?” “Yes” “One String” “Yes.” The Ju Hoan man explained that “One string, five strings, any return would be alright. You see we don’t trade with things, we trade with people.”

Basically, in Hxaro exchange, If I gave my roommate a Mercedes Benz and he gave me a spoon, it would be a fair exchange. The value of the object isn’t as important as the relationship built and maintained between the two of us.

yes. The way T.W. Suit may have interpreted it is a bit more like "Songfight Bubuti". Bubuti (pronounced - bu-bu-si), is something I learnt about while living in Kiribati:

"The Bubuti system is used on the Pacific Island of Kiribati. It relates to the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights. Under the Bubuti System if someone is approached and says " I bubuti you for your shirt", that person is obliged to give you their shirt. However the next day you can go to the person now wearing your shirt and say "I bubuti you for your lantern", and now you have yourself a lantern."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubuti_system

This is the system that the Lyricburglar operates under. If you post lyrics, he will bubuti them. Thus exposing a potential flaw in the system (to Western eyes anyway) - that some people end up always being bubuti-ers, and not bubuti-ees

(edit - if I were a pedantic sort of person I would go in and edit that Wiki page. "Kiribati" is not an "island". "Kiribati" is a nation made up of the Gilbert Is, Line Is, Phoenix Is and Banaba. )

i don't remember a hxaro being advertised since i've started fighting, although it is very possible i missed one somewhere along the line, so i wasn't quite familiar with what it was. i guess it all comes down to if the artist would find the covers valuable or not and if the cover artists would find the time they spent trying to figure out and record someone else's song time valuably spent. interesting concepts. what kind of occasion usually prompts a hxaro?

A day ending in Y. There's no occasion. Someone just says "Hey let's do a hxaro for <place name here>". It's not for their birthday, anniversary, etc. It's just because.

You have a lot of songs on here. Wouldn't you find it valuable - or at least be pleased - to hear other people re-interpret them?

I can't speak for everyone, but I've never heard a cover of a song of mine that didn't make my hair stand on end. It's one of the coolest things ever.

so it appears there are 2 competing secret hxaros going on at the same time. how do i know this? it's a secret. and no, it's not because i'm organizing one of them.

but i think it's funny this is the first time this has happened. :)

so if you have the chance, you should do one of them. or both even. as someone who received such a gift, i can only say it's the greatest musical gift i've ever gotten, and anybody questioning the motivation for such a kind gift probably shouldn't play.

Actually the Octothorpe one was because of their instruments being stolen, but that was the only one.
Are there really two? Awesome.
And yeah, the hxaro is all about the giving and the love.

What they said.

There's not much better than having someone else dig a song of yours enough to cover it.

Basically, hxaros are the best and anyone who thinks differently is probably a Communist or a jerk.

So I was wondering, what happens if the secret hxaree (I hope you won't hate me for making that up) sends a PM, too?

I'm sure I will just be told to cover someone else's song. I mean...what?
