The Song Fight Bulletin Board

unfortunately i didn't get around to doing the artwork i'd planned for this title. but it would have been funny. check it out.
i envisioned some kind of strange creature (dr. seuss style) on the bottom of the image, and then a bunch of people (probably stolen from some website like "girls gone wild" or whatever) with the appropriate places censored by the songfight logo, or the guitar dude vs. trumpet guy icon, or a few other things. and then various songfighters' (including, of course, PFM) heads on the nude bodies. haha it's funny, right? *shrug*. then the smaller version would have been a close-up of like, one of the torsos showing one of the censored locations, and it would say the title on the little censor bar thing. (i'm thinking these would look something like in r.e.m.'s "pop song 89" video.)

so anyway, imagine how cool that would have been, and then stick some song reviews here.

Heh, does sound cool. Gemini6ice went the Seuss route, too, check it out in the place where it lives, it's pretty cool.

And now I've got the Cure's "Killing an Arab" stuck in my head, for whatever reason. Weird.

Naked On The Meach Reviews

Boomstick: Cool mood. Voice is a little sharp in parts, but the spoken word bits are perfect. I like endings that leave you hanging. Nice.

DJ Blargh: This happens to segue nicely from the previous song. About a minute in I’m getting nervous that this is just an instrumental. I’m digging it though. Yeah, nice piece of music and all, but you could have submitted it for any of the four titles this week, and it would have had just as much contextual relationship. Unless a meach is some techno instrument I don’t know about.

Future Boy: I like that vocal effect. This one’s my favorite so far. Oh, that chord change at 1:24 is beautiful. Nice ending too. The bass line seemed a little disproportionately loud on my system, but other than that, this is nearly perfect. Kudos!

Jack Shite: Good lyrics. I’d read them beforehand, and was looking forward to hearing your treatment of them. This is a pleasant little number. That drum intro set me up for something much more funky, like Shaft or something. But I got into the groove of this easily enough. Nice job!

Johnny Cashpoint’s Evil Twin: This is interesting. I can’t discern a good portion of the words, though, so hopefully they’re in the lyrics archive. I like this. I think the arrangement sells it short.

Rogue Retard: It sounds like the singer is standing out behind the drum kit. Get him up front! I’m digging this though. I was apprehensive at the band name, but this is better than expected.

WreckdoM: Boy howdy. This is a wall of chaos. Well put together, though. I’ll read the lyrics if they’re posted.

Jim Tyrrell: Recorded live at the Dutch Treat in Franconia, NH. It pretty much explains itself. I worried a bit that the joke is too subtle, but decided it was better than being too obtuse.

Good fight, y’all. Future Boy is my votegetter for now, but I’ll listen again to be sure.

Obivously it should be Johnny Cashpoint's More Evil Twin, as Johnny Thrashpoint (author of punk classics like 'Nowhere') is my evil twin. Whoever you are, I'll let it go if the song's any good (haven't heard it yet)

Yeah, bummer-- that's my fault. I f#@cked up. Someone please remind me NOT to work out lyrics while driving and or/in the shower. What the f is a meach? Guess i'm about to learn. First J$'s evil twin. OK Meach is almost synonymous with beach. That was not good. Not good at all. DJ Blargh has the oddest name ever. Blargh? Is that some sort of onomatopoeia? Anyways, you did an instrumental and Songfighters like instrumentals as much as the movie going public enjoyed "From Justin to Kelly". Next. Oh shoot, Boomstick is back. RG is bringing the funky bass and FS is bringing a lot of static noise. I love FS' voice but that odd production flaw is hurting. Not the song but me as well. Hmmm, turned down the volume and now I don't mind it as much. It's an OK tune. Wreckdom bought the madness, as usual, but for some reason I wanna sing "Rolling with the Homies" over the beat. Not a bad song. Not a good song. Just a song. Jack Shite's next and it's a casual tune with some Jimmy Buffett flavor. A contender. The Rogueretard isn't all that bad. It's kinda catchy. The vocals are slurred and sloppy but it's ok. But this should not be 3 and a 1/2 minutes long. Live Tyrell! Irish person with a speech impediment? Huh? Acquainted with your mum...wait speech impediment. Oh joke gotten. Vote given to you. Boomstick gets the silver and bronze to the Shite. Off to the next fight. Wait, I already did all 4 fights. Shoot, now what to do with the rest of my day. Ooh, SF Radio program. I'm off to create some Nofidelity. Later.

Johnny Cashpoint's Evil Twin-- MY evil twin's name is "Skippy", what's yours? 'The artist formerly known as J$.', involving some strange symbolism? This makes me chuckle... whee... a capella -- the ryhthm sort of reminds me of a country/folk song. The beat, that is.
The actual singing gets a bit wobbly at times. Some really good moments when the voices come together. J$. has a really cool voice, warbly like, very distinctive, maybe it was the bathroom recording session-- but you don't sound a bit like him. Well, anyway-- It aint mondo suckage(at least in my opinion). So J$ isn't gonna have to hunt you down and kill you one slow inch at a time. Not my favorite, though.

WHEE Jim Tyrell (Bounces with glee) Great to see you back. Dang and you woulda HAD my vote on Frannie which was a shoe in up until the SoS tune. The SteelyDanesque groove, stringing all three titles together... tres cool. Also loved your Silent Pipe story, which is also on one of my faves playlists.

You seem to excell at story telling songs and this is no exception. RG's right ( "The Scotsman's" one of my all time favorite fun songs, too.) This is brilliant. Awesome job.

Jack Shite Went with beach, too, I see-- With not a mingle meech impediment in sight, but instead, someone not averse to baring their mum in public.
Sorta has a Jimmy Buffet flavor, which is cool.

The line the "greatest joys of life are never out of reach" really made me giggle, because of the preceeding line. (Which I am 99.7% sure was completely intentional.) Cool island groove. I've enjoyed many of your songs, this one's good too, but point loss for having not a damn thing to do with meach-- except for being a "sly" interpretation.

Wreckdom--Kinda like the psycho-dealio groove ya got goin on, the taste and demented vision of LSD-gone-bad whack sounds which are, at times, eerily similar to a genuine facsimile of music or something rather like it. Parts of it are strangely reminiscent of Hendrix, in which case-- change that LSD to heroin, woulda ya? Not heavily enamored of the vox though. Not sure I'd wanna listen to it more than once, then again-- It could grow on me-- like hallucinogenic fungus.

DJ Bl-Argh, Blarney and Blather-- Sorry dude, but seeing "DJ" anything generally strikes fear and loathing into my heart. Especially when it takes approximate 10- 15 minutes to download it...OK-- is this an instrumental? Well, I don't hate the first 30 seconds or so of music I have so far-- I am getting a bit ADD waiting for something to happen, though. (Intermission, "Oooh-- shiny! What's another word for thesaurus? The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain. Does this window have a handle.) Suggestion-- Check the Archives for Karl's Mom, etc. They just did a really enjoyable instrumental. This song doesn't remind me of it at all.

Rogue Retard- :::Does Happy Dance, punctuated by Ren and Stimpy's "Happy Happy Joy Joy"::: Hey--Cool... I'm not gonna have the suckiest song in this fight. Which conversely means that I might not get to make Blue who I'd like to ask if I could call "Kenny". Whew, glad that's over cuz my attention span's bout wandered to Jabip by now.
The music itself ain't total suckage but dang yo, the voice and lyrics make me desirous of molesting the sanctity of my ear canals with graphite tipped pointy objects. I'd love to tell you I've had a great time listening to this-- except I haven't.

Future Boy - electro calypso! I'd like to remix this to be a lot nastier musically, but it's cute. I'm using that word a lot tonight. I like 'slugs give me the jitters' as a line.

Wreckdom - There's a sound you're using that sounds like an de-tuned guitar? If you dropped that this would be really really good. I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm not following the words so it sounds like a good 45 seconds could be chopped out of the middle (going on overall impression) but damn, that's my favourite (the only) Wreckdom song that makes me go whoosh. maybe it's because I can't quite hear the words / voice

Rogue Retard - Ah, that's a shame. Great backing track. really nicely produced, too, but quiet vocals done in a comedy mong voice do not trip my cockswitch. I like the 'ha ha' bits. Ah now I can hear the voice and wish i couldn't. Why the comedy mong voice? It's so wearing ... *thinks* God I hope it is a comedy mong voice

jack Shite - ah that's lovely. Lovely slightly cheesy but good casio-esque synth tone. I think I enjoy these chilled out bongos-on-the-beach songs you do best of all of your music. Of course I wouldn't reccommend them for the freezing, cloud-covered, stone beaches of England, but it makes me want to chill out in Florida somewhere, so yay!

DJ Blargh - Ha! Great 80s opening. Shame it meanders from there. And it's an instrumental so *shrug* I do like the guitar-y sounds towards the end.

Boomstick - great voice. Great confidence in it which appeals as always. Nice creepy bass playing. Attempts to introduce a chorus just highlight it hasn't really got one however I like the jam feel and it's really well produced but could do with a bit more instrumentation here and there.

Nice fight. Jack Shite has it for me. Boomstick, Future Boy, Jim Tyrell, Wreckdom fighting it out for second. DJ Blargh doesn't get a vote cos it's an instrumental, but it would be high in the ranking if it had words. Rogue Retard would have got my vote if it hadn't been for the ultimately annoying comedy voice.

"bongos on the beach"....hehe. maybe i outta drop the O to be more appropo..... of course, i do live in a beach town. and i grew up in a beach town so i guess if the shoe fits wear it. and if you ever make to northern california, you have an open invite to hang out at the beach in santa cruz j$.

i kind of snicker when i read all the comparisons to jimmy buffett. it's not offensive mind you, just kind of a funny comparison i think. i like jimmy buffett ok, but i just don't see how i really sound like him (except we are both part of the notorious GnG genre, arguably THE most despised genre of music on songfight....)

First off, I would like to tip my glass to the fightmaster(s). Four fights is great!

Jim Tyrell: Hello Ego. Meet Restraint. Oh no it's guy and guitar. This is minimalistic and annoying. Not creative or funny enough to make me want to listen again.

Johnny Cashpoint's Evil twin: I think that this is Johnny Cashpoint. I can't see why WreckdoM won't win at this point in reviewing.

DJ Blargh: The word Blargh implies a lot of things. I've always been fond of it. This isn't terrible. It isn't really appropriate for songfight though. I like the way it sounds, but not having vocals means you could have been working on it for Months.

Rogue Retard: I don't think that these vocals or the style is funny. There are some nice little changes in here though musically.

Jack Shite: This is plenty well put together and melodic. As a part of WreckdoM, I'm fundamentally opposed to it. I can't really point out anything that you did wrong, but you could have done a lot more.

Boomstick: This melody leaves me feeling a little ill. Something about it is probably against some music theory principle that I'm oblivious to. Perhaps it just really clashes with the bass line in a major way. I can't listen to all of this. "It's like a bad casserole full of black beans, corn, and vienna sausages…Gross.", My Girlfriend said when I put the headphones on her.

Future boy: Someone else out there is getting high on Meach. It's nice to know. This is very lacking in the ambience that you seem to be going for. That's some pretty subtle use of vocoder. I can't like this. Sorry.

WreckdoM: I think that this song has some great elements in it. I was very happy with how PhAt this came out. I've listened to it over and over during editing and it's grown on me quite a bit; Bon Apetit.

In summation, I think that many of these songs raped the title. It was a difficult title though. Keep em' coming everyone.

Seriously, I put considerable thought into the necessity of including that intro, but I decided it was relevant enough to the nature of the recording, and the file size was still acceptable for dialup users (being one, I'm fairly qualified to judge), so what the Hell.
And I didn't think I was selling myself particularly strongly, I was just trying to get the folks at my little apres-ski show to visit the site and listen to some music. Maybe it seems more self-serving when listened to out of context, I don't know.
