Moving again

My house is being packed up around me. The guitars will all be packed in a container for a month or so. Will be back in Aus on Saturday and off to the beach for a week. See sun again after a year of rain!

If you just left a job and got as a leaving present an $80 voucher for the local record shop - what would you spend it on? Imagine you are a middle aged man who has been living in a small town at the arse end of the world for a year and has no idea what has been going on in the musical world for quite a while - what would be something new and fun to listen to? (Bearing in mind - a record shop in a small town at the arse end of the world is unlikely to have anything too obscure. They do carry "Sleeper" by Caravan Ray - but I already have a copy of that. Several in fact)

I would go to the bargain bin and grab as many things I'd never heard of as possible. There's bound to be a few real gems hidden in with the stuff that's obscure for a reason.

Well, that last one is pretty good, anyway.

Buy one just for the cover.
Ask the "most interesting looking" clerk to pick one for you.
Ask the homely bird there to do the same (but with flattery or something... hey, a random kindness goes around the world).
Ask a customer what their kid(s) are listening to. And buy it, regardless.
And pick an old favorite that you've only got/remember fondly on vinyl.

Don't forget to pimp your own album to each of those people while you're at it, heh.

Anything local? Ask the clerks to decide for you like its their spree. How about an expensive box set?

That works best if they're pushing a baby carriage at the time, I've found.

I've found some of the most inspirational music this way. I love the bargain bin in small independent record stores.

I also like DVD best of live performances. On my Xmas gift list is the Ramones "Weird Tales of the Ramones" box set. It's a 4 disc set. Disc 1, 2 and 3 are music and disc 4 is a DVD. It also comes with a comic book. Marky Ramone started video taping the bands tours in the 80s and some of that footage is in the DVD. Should be awesome!

the bargain bin is a real rare beast these days. sadly. i love bargain bins. i have found several favorite bands this way.
