It's Veteran's day here in the great United States and Armistice or remembrance day in other parts of the world. It's a federal holiday, so some of us get the day off. For me, it's just another day with the exception of not getting any mail and not being able to check out a book at the library. Books........as if.
But no matter what this day is to you, it's still a day to give rememberance to the great men and woman that fought for our freedom. So happy Veteran's Day.
Hey Paco, do you have an
Applebee's near you?
Question of the Day: Obama has been in office for a little over ten months. How do you think he's doing? Is there one particular thing he has done that you think is awesome or maybe something he's done that completely blows. Is he the leader that's going to put us back on the straight and narrow?
Wednesday's video of the day.

Don't know who this "Obama" bloke is, but well done Peter Garrett, Federal Minister for the Environment and former bald-headed banshee out front of Midnight Oil.

QotD: Actually I've been seeing lately how everything that has gone wrong has been blamed on Obama like he's the devil or something. No one seems to realize that the economic crisis America is facing has nothing to do with 10 months of Obama but 8 years of Bush. I'll tell you what, Obama hasn't declared a bloody and useless war on any countries because he wants to impress his Daddy. Obama hasn't delivered a dozen speeches that belong more on SNL than the White House. Obama is doing just fine.

I had to give about 6 speeches on Obama this weekend. Fuck that guy.
:p
(No, but really, everyone thought he'd be awesome, but um, the government doesn't work like that. It takes months to change things, but Obama has hardly been snappy about it. [And even if he was, the bipartisan of the US is fucking everything up]. And the US economy has as much to do with America's problems as the entire world's. Imports/exports, trade deficit, etc etc. I know too much about the stupid Obama administration

)
Btw, one of my questions at a speech and debate tournament this weekend was "Should the Chuck Norris roundhouse kick be recognized as a weapon of mass destruction?" How the hell do you answer that?

You've got low standards Rone if your idea of your country's leader doing just fine is not being a total fuckwit. What are some of the positive things he's done for your country, and has your country changed for the better or worse since he became emperor? This is what you need to consider, not is he as bad as John Bush. a salamander would do just fine by that standard.

I think he's doing great. Whether he'll be effective in everything is another thing. International standing is something the US needs to focus on and he has garnered fabulous feedback for his efforts. The economy will chug along, and some of the pressure on corporate insanity may be the right thing to try, but I'm not sure it will have much long term effect. Healthcare needs to be turned on its ear...his reform isn't going to destroy the industry any more than The Large Hadron Collider will suck us into a black hole.
He's asking questions and trying to build consensus. That's fresh. I don't hold him to every promise he made. When you're in office and learn what's going on I expect you to change your approach accordingly.
The true test will be the war in Afghanistan. All the other shit is just distraction.

If it was, at least GW would be able to find it. Because Chuck Norris' roundhouse kick is so powerful, it can be seen from outer space by the naked eye.

It doesn't just take "months" to effect significant change; it takes a generation. Obama had a lifetime's worth of damage to undo, but a lot of his voter base seems disgruntled that he didn't manage to FIX EVERYTHING OVERNIGHT. Yes, it's been a year (a whole year!), but government work is plodding even when cross-partisan tensions aren't at an all-time high. And so the ever-so-fickle public has turned against the democrats and now think that the way to real progress is to put the power back in the hands of the people who've been blocking that same progress for the last eleven months.
It makes my head spin.
My main criticism of Obama is his desperate need for validation in the form of "bipartisanship." We've weakened several key pieces of legislature already in the interest of gaining "bipartisan" support for bills that STILL didn't wind up being supported by Republicans. For instance: just before its passing in the House, the Health Care Bill had an amendment tacked onto it. This amendment would prohibit the use of government-sponsored health care monies from contributing to abortions.
This is a hot-button issue, I get it. However, most of the democrats who supported and voted for this amendment did so in spite of generally strong pro-abortion records prior, which to me seems to indicate that this was a compromise for the Republicans. Nonetheless, after the final vote on the health care bill, there was only one (R) vote: that of Anh "Joseph" Cao, from my (heavily-Dem) native district in Louisiana.
So what's with the compromise? Was it worth all those Democrats voting against their conscience just to get one guy with an (R) after his name to vote for their bill?
