Sid Denison and the Harpooners
Got my first real six-string
Bought it off a bloke named Bevan
Played it till my fingers bled
It was the Summer of '97...
...no, that will never work

"'97" by Berkeley Social Scene
Guest appearances by Melvin and Thanks for the Frisbee
Verse 1
You were working in a record store
far away look in your eye
wondered why you wasted your time
just hangin around
used to cut your hair in our kitchen
worked in the city to pay the rent
didn't understand what it meant
to follow my heart with my feet on the ground
Pre-chorus
and when I hear
"all is full of love"
It sends me through time
and I wonder how....
Chorus
Did you ever imagine we'd get here?
All the late night conversations
thought we had the best intentions
we would never sell out.
In '97, when we were young
didn't know where we were headed
looking back I don't regret it
You have to make some mistakes.
Verse 2
Now you're married with a baby
have a house and family too
At first I was surprised it's true
you were always unpredictable.
I'm still waiting for a sign
To hear my own voice as my guide
and I miss you by my side
as my conscience and my best friend

Going south he had a '97 land rover
Came back with some gravestones pulling down soft shoulders
On his way to catch some play with miss december
Passed out with some jack and had a fender bender
A fifth to keep him awake
Fell asleep at the wheel
Velocitized to the whiskey he drank
Most of the time he had Biggie or Rae
Like toothpicks in his ears
But a thief took his tapes.
Though he knew he was swayin'
Remained in control by singing his favorites
Criminology, Hypnotize, you know the basics
Criminally hypnotized he had faded.
Returning from vacation
'64-'97
'95-'97
Didn't believe in hell or heaven but she
prayed for salvation in her closing seconds
And metal tore up flesh, he lost consciousness
Regained it weeks later in a hospital bed
Learned of the deaths, let them set in
Lost his own life to guilt one night in '97.

hey girl
you were only ten then
but thirteen years ago you still had
trouble making friends
my girl
you grew up so fast
and now you're gone and I was wrong
to think your innocence could last
you're not as ugly as they say
you tried to find another way
to be beautiful
but you and I we are the same
so you can quit it with the games
cause I see you're cold
cause we're free from time
and I know you're mine to save
just like in ninety seven baby
hey girl
don't you wanna come home
cause you've done a lot of things that you're not
proud of and it shows
my girl
won't answer my calls
and everytime I see her face
her countenance falls
you're not as ugly as they say
you tried to find another way
to be beautiful
but you and I we are the same
so you can quit it with the games
cause I see you're cold
cause we're free from time
and I know you're mine to save
just like in ninety seven baby
hey girl
you so suddenly appeared
and crying don't solve anything
but I'm so glad that you're here
my girl
you never did me wrong
I reach out to the apparition
hadn't seen you in so long
I can't believe you're gone
oh god it's been too long
cause we're free from time
and I know you're mine to save
just like in ninety seven baby

Somehow I didn't notice the apostrophe until I went to post the lyrics here...anyway, the song has nothing to do with the year and I think therefore I'm disqualified. But here are the lyrics:
[dialog between Boop and Scruffy]
There was a time when I would count up to one
Then it was ten, but even that isn't fun
I wanna count so high the numbers fly to the sun!
Up to 97! 97! 97!
(He'll be counting 97 times!)
Some like eleven, but it's not really big
Twelve is swell if I am counting some eggs
I want to count a caterpillar's delicate legs!
All 97! 97! 97!
(He'll be counting 97 times!)
I'm sorry to say this the end of this song
It isn't appropriate to sing it too long
How many seconds do you think 'til I'm gone?
Maybe 97? 97! 97!
(He'll be counting 97 times!)

Jon Eric - 97
I am a speck of dust
I am a particle
I am an atom and
I am a molecule
Without a name
Without a name
They shot me full of holes
With an alpha ray
They did experiments
And left me to decay
Without a name
Without a name
In four and a half hours, there'll be half of me left
And after that I'm gonna disappear, I guess
They tried to call me Berkeley, but it don't feel right
I'm just gonna stay 97 tonight
They took some measurements
They figured out the time
It's gonna take before
I shrivel up and die
Without a name
Without a name
You can study me, but I ain't here long
In four and a half hours, I'll be gone, gone, gone
You can call me Berkeley, but it won't feel right
I'm just gonna stay 97 tonight
I was a speck of dust
I hung around the air
I was an element that never really
Should have been there
Without a name
Without a name
Without a name
Without a name

Milo Dunderville
Millie Dunderville appears in the role of Zona.
Dave Dunderville soloed on alto and tenor saxomaphones.
The name’s Erasmus but people call me Edward
I’m only here because of wife #3
Looking back now, shoulda kept on walking
Coulda spared myself a lot of misery
‘Cause it all went south
It all went south
It all went south for me back in ‘97
It all went south
It all went south
It all went south for me when she went up to heaven
I’m never seeing freedom – never leaving Moundsville
I suppose some say that this is what I’ve sown
Damn Mr. Preston, damn ghost of Zona
It’s damn cold down here beneath this unmarked stone
And it all went south…
Unlucky in both life and love
Found guilty for the murder of
My bride
Well, prison brought me to my knees
I guess I caught some dread disease
And died
Instrumental
It all went south…

We were hanging at our friend’s house bored to death
The only sound was coming from the tv set
That’s when Eddie said “let’s get out of here”
So we left and we went to grab a beer
On the boardwalk it was a hot and humid night
We passed the fortune teller she was such a fright
But it looked really cool inside her air conditioned room
So we went inside to see if we were doomed
Oh fortune teller don’t come up to me
Don’t tell me things that I don’t want to know
Oh fortune teller stay away from me
With your one eye and crumpled hand and vacant empty stare
So we pushed Eddie down now he’s sitting in the chair
His face turned a ghastly ghoulish white
Then she dealt the cards and she gave a toothless grin
It’s not what Eddie wanted to hear (she said)
Beware 1997
Beware ‘97
‘cause you are going to die
That’s when Eddie freaked and he bolted out of there
We all went home and never got that beer
The year back then was 1993
In 4 more years we’ll have to wait and see
Oh fortune teller, don’t come up to me
Don’t tell me things that I don’t want to hear
Oh fortune teller, stay away from me
With your one eye and crumpled hand and vacant empty stare
1997 came and went
Eddie was still alive (he was still alive)
We celebrated on New Years Eve
But the next day we heard that Eddie died
Why oh why oh why
It was 1998 and that’s not what the creepy one eyed lady said
Why oh why oh why
We asked his mom who was so upset
She said he got hit by a ’97 Corvette

Metamorphosis '97
The Real Sign, feat. The Zaz as Marshall Applewhite
The world will be renewed but we will survive
We are the children of the next level
our souls will undergo the transformation
we will follow the two
through heaven's gate
We are souls
. Our bodies remain
We are the spiritual
. Release the physical
The comet arrives
. And we evacuate
Survive the renewal
. Go to the next level
Chorus
We are children of the next level
. We are the two
Leading the away team
Deserving of salvation
In the next dimension
Metamorphosis in ninety seven
Never thinking
. Not what we’re for
Never alone
. Not even on the phone
Its not suicide
. To be more than human
We will move on
. On the next level
. I know I can save you
your body will rot but I will free your soul
. all I give you to enslave you
steal your thoughts to command and control

Mark Colvin:
The planet may be warming but Australia's plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions has been put in the freezer. The Federal Government after spending the last year warning of the costs of delay has now put its emissions trading scheme off until the end of 2012 at the earliest.
Penny Wong:
The fact is the longer we delay our response to climate change the harder our job will become and the more it will cost. We cannot run and we cannot hide. We can't wish it away and further delay will only make climate change worse.
We cannot run and we cannot hide.
We cannot run and we cannot hide.
We cannot run and we cannot hide.
We cannot run and we cannot hide.
We heard the warnings, we saw the signs
But in the end we did nothing, nothing
There was talk with protocols signed
They all amounted to nothing, nothing
Endless pointless political debate
But no real will to legislate
How do we tell the children
We just left it far too late?
Mark Colvin:
2009 was the 2nd hottest year on record. And the past decade goes into the books as the hottest on record
American Geological Institute's Directory of Geoscience Departments:
97% of climatologists say global warming is occurring and caused by humans
Kevin Rudd:
Climate change is the great moral challenge of our generation. Climate change is not just an environmental challenge. Climate change is an economic challenge, a social challenge and actually represents a deep challenge on the overall question of national security.
We heard the warnings, we paid no heed
We simply did nothing, nothing
We succumbed to our collective greed
And we chose to do nothing, nothing
Endless pointless economic debate
But we still procrastinate
How do we tell the children
We just left it far too late?
We cannot run and we cannot hide.
We cannot run and we cannot hide.
We cannot run and we cannot hide.
We cannot run and we cannot hide.
We heard the warnings, we saw the signs
But in the end we did nothing, nothing
There was talk with protocols signed
They all amounted to nothing, nothing
We heard the warnings, we paid no heed
We simply did nothing, nothing
We succumbed to our collective greed
And we chose to do nothing, nothing
Endless pointless political debate
But we still procrastinate
How do we tell the children
We just left it far too late?
How do we tell the children
We just left it far too late?
How do we tell the children?
Caravan Harriet:
...you left it too late

My guest, provider of dream narration and muse-like inspiration for this song less than two hours before it was due: my four-year-old daughter, Molly. If SongFight! is still around when you're grown, and you somehow find yourself reading this: I love you, Mozilla, and I hope you still enjoy wearing your princess dresses.
===
Princess Molly had a dream
She was all that ever was and had ever been
Wandering lonely and alone
In the only world she'd ever known
Princess Molly had a plan
Turn her whole world inside out to find a man
Ninety-seven times around
I was the only one she ever found
She said she guessed that I would have to do
And I said, "I love you, too"
We shared a castle on the sand
And often gazed across our barren land
She watched the earth, the sea, the sky
Then one day Princess Molly began to cry
And she said she guessed that she would have to go
And I said, "I know"

I helped the Scottish defeat the English at a Bridge called Sterling
Many good men died that day beneath banners unfurling
I sailed on a Barbary ship before they drew the line
That separated church and state, but not for the last time
This '97's like the last '97 like every '97 before
Genocide, greed, hatred, disease, famine, and war
Next '97's just another '97, at least if they make it that far
I'm doing what I can to help, and must do it forevermore
I watched the Mayans fall in the name of a tyrant King
Wept with the women and children at the sight of this terrible thing
I saw the other shoe drop when the Catholics had their turn
As 26 died in Nagasaki. Will they ever learn?
This '97's like the last '97 like every '97 before
Genocide, greed, hatred, disease, famine, and war
Next '97's just another '97, at least if they make it that far
I'm doing what I can to help, and must do it forevermore
I saw two souls get joined today
And it filled my heart with glee
This species might survive after all
Without any help from me
This '97's like the last '97 like every '97 before
Life, joy, and hope go on forevermore
Next '97's just another '97 and I think they'll make it that far
I've done what I could to help, it's not needed anymore

Featuring Steve Durand on trumpet
verse-
You said you like a guy that has some experience
I fell in love with your cute face and innocence
I had to pinch myself 97 times just to know that you're real
I could tell right away that you kind of liked me
The way you LOL at my stupidity
I do try my best, but I really must confess
Both mentally and physically you make me such a mess
verse-
You get delirious, then you get so serious
You've got a bun in the over and I'm curious
How's an angel immaculately conceive?
You're from Venus, I'm from Mars and we're a world apart
But we're together everyday in our foolish hearts
I'm an alien, you're a vegetarian
Area 51 is our solarium
chorus-
In the sun we're going to crush on
until we lose our minds
In the sun we're going to crush on
until we lose our minds
bridge-
I'd sell my soul to hold you in my arms
verse-
You said you like a guy that has some experience
I fell in love with your cute face and innocence
I had to cut myself 97 times just to know I bleed
I could tell right away that you were into it
The way you laugh out loud at all my stupid shit
I try my best, but I really must confess
Both mentally and physically you're making me such a mess
chorus X2-
In the sun we're going to crush on
until we lose our minds
In the sun we're going to crush on
until we lose our minds

These are my lyrics. I put all kinds of font changes in here, to try to explain. Due to the unfortunate recording sitch' that my singer dealt with and my inability to solve it, I doubled my example track over hers.

I wish I hadn't had to do that because her vibrato is very nice and better than mine. When she sings it is in italics, and the asterisk indicates things that are happening at the same time (like more modern motet-type singing, but without the accompaniment because the piano is changing).
'97
Is it done / just a dream
Under moon, stars or sun
Could you be anything?
Could I be anyone ... anything
You don't know anything
I guard my dreams silently …
You don't know what I'm going through
And I guard them jealously
You don't know
What I'm going through
(You don't know why ........ I try .... and why ... I lie......)
And I can't tell you why … I try / And why I lie
*Thirteen years
A long time to fall
in '97
When you're heaven bound
And you look around ….
At the long way down ….
All around
a long way down
*
Sometimes I look around
You're not there on the ground
And it's so far to fall
so far down
so far down
*
You don't know anything
I guard my dreams silently
jealously ...
Is it done
Could you be anyone?
