anyone for a new cover fight?

Post by the idiot king »

i'm pretty open for artists, but i have some suggestions:

radiohead (that never did happen)
the cure
kraftwerk
depeche mode
arcade fire
pink floyd
smashing pumpkins
blur

i *may* be able to host, but it depends on popularity, etc. i'm thinking deadline in early sept?

I'd do a Pumpkins coverfight.

I'd probably participate in any of those fights except Arcade Fire.

looks like a vague lead for a cure coverfight.

I lean more towards SP because they were a big influence on me back in the day, but I love the Cure and would take part in a Cure coverfight. Such a great catalog of work to choose from.

Have to admit that none of these bands particularly inspire me, but I did want to mention that if there was going to be a regular "cover other songfighters" type coverfight, songfight is now set up to host those songs (at least ones that are songs done for songfight titles). See the "hxaro archive" link on the front page.

(Also, if anybody is just inspired to cover another songfighter's SF song, regardless of whether there's a coverfight or not, that can also be hosted in the hxaro archive).

So if anybody was thinking about organizing a cover each other coverfight, I'd be interested in that and could handle the hosting end of it.

Yeah, I was thinking about posting something to the effect of "Who's up for an Original Flavor Coverfight?" but then this thread happened. I know we often try to keep the sidefights from conflicting with each other, but I'd love to see a new Original Flavor coverfight happen; seems there hasn't been one in a very long time.

well, i actually was just posting on the other topic that we currently only have 3.5 definites in for the cure sidefight, so that will either a.) be small, or b.) not happen at this point.

is original flavor just songfighters covering songfighters?

It varies, but often there is an organizer; people sign up with the organizer and then one way or another the organizer assigns cover-ers and cover-ees so that (in theory) everybody gets covered. There may also be some other non-optional or optional challenges, and then somewhere on the interwebs, there is a set of tools for voting - somebody who's run one may have to step in and explain (or run).

On the front page, there is a "Sidefight Archive" link, and you can look there to see how some of the previous coverfights were handled...

I just posted over there that I'd be interested, but I'd also like to do an Original Flavor coverfight. I'd like to see both happen, as long as there wasn't an overlap in the dates...

Actually, here's a much easier way to describe it... remember when Frankie did that cover of my song, and I was supposed to do a cover for you, but didn't actually post it until five years later? That was an Original Flavor Coverfight. 8)

Brainstorming...

Let the particpants choose their own coveree out of a list of other participants, with order decided by lottery?

Have the Covermaster assign people to cover each other's entries from the same title?

Requiring that each cover be done in the style of yet another Songfighter?

Pairing the oldest participant with the newest, and so on down the line?

Assign participants to one another at random, and stipulate that you must cover the song with the fewest votes? Or stipulate that you must cover that person's first entry?

Let each participant choose which of their own songs they'd like to hear covered?

There's a few ideas, but honestly, I'm not sure a new twist is necessary; it's been so long since we've done a fight where it was just Songfighters covering Songfighters, that I'd be glad to see it back in any capacity. Of course, the "twist" needn't be advertised in advance of the fight. In my first coverfight, nobody except for Covermaster (JB) knew that he had assigned fighters in reciprocal pairs (i.e., I covered Duboce Triangle, and they covered me, &c). Some of these are behind-the-scenes twists that Coermaster can implement without telling anyone.

Also, if we do another OF Coverfight, we would (I assume) need a new Covermaster, since JB hasn't been as active on the boards lately (basically just someone to put all the names in the hat, make the assignments, and send out all the private messages). Charles has volunteered hosting, so he seems like a logical choice for the job, or if he's not interested, I'll do it.
