i'm using an alesis multimix8 firewire with a brand new desktop (quadcore 2.9ghz, 4gb ram) and cakewalk sonar 8. i am getting a crackling noise on playback. i guess this noise has something to do with the buffer settings.... so i set the buffer all the way to the slowest (347.8 msec) and noticed an improvement, but i still get the noise, the only difference being that it's less frequent.

what

can i do here?

sorry shouldve poked around more before making a thread

i guess switching from wdm to asio did the trick. don't know 100% what that means but it seems to work so i'm good. :]

WDM is the standard driver architecture that's more general-purpose but doesn't really do much aside from allowing basic asynchronous playback and recording, and there can be glitches due to things getting out of sync. ASIO is a proprietary driver architecture that's designed to give audio software much more direct data transfer with fine-grained control over timing and synchronization, so it can do a much better job of coordinating the massive amounts of time-critical data that are going around. It's like the difference between a line cook at a diner and a gourmet chef at a Michelin-star restaurant.
