$#!t My Dad Says

When I saw that shatner was in this, I thought, I HAVE TO SEE IT. But I really wasn't expecting it to be anything less than lame dry humor pushing him one last time to be in a stupid tv show.
But damn, I've seen the first two episodes, and I didn't hate it. In fact, I enjoyed it. I was smiling and noise was emitting from my vocal chords uncontrollably. Yeah, sitcom humor, no doubt. BUT, Captain Kirk totally makes the show! The lead guy (his tv son) is more like the side kick than the lead. I'm pretty sure that's intensional though, because he's the only unknown actor on the show.

Anyway, my feeling is that when a sitcom starts off this strong, it has a great future. It's not breaking any new ground, but Shatner is in it! He's funny as hell with his lines and he can act like nobodies business. A completely believable character.

Pro: 30 minutes of smiles and chuckles, with the added icing of some seasoned comedic actors. (looks like they hired the old Mad tv cast)

Con: Shatner's tv son that lives with him is weak sauce. He's not on the same stage as the rest of the cast. I can tell he will get there. But right now he's doing what he learned in acting school, while the other cast members are free balling with experience. He acts like he practices by doing lines from "How I Met Your Mother", lol.

I hate it too. Haven't seen it, but I base my opinions solely on titles and commercials.

Then you sir, are not the person I want giving me movie reviews. BUT, you'd make a great politician.

The show is good, and I'd be willing to make a wager on it getting picked up for a second season.

Not gonna take that bet.

But I couldn't stand the pilot.

Pilots suck! In today's sitcom world, they are basically fast ideas of what can be. The actual series is the catch. Heck, they didn't even use the same "live with him son" from the pilot.

Just watch it and stop looking for fault. It's a funny show and Shatner can act. He is an act'torrrr. That's all there is to it. Enjoy.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. This show actually had two pilots, because the network hated the first one. The second one was the one I saw (as much TV as I watch, they still don't send me advance screeners of things... :) ), and it did have the same lead guy as the rest of the series. Boy is he terrible. He sounds like he's reading off of cue cards, and during the "emotional" scenes, he hovers around with a big grin on his face like he's waiting for the next gag. Completely unsuited to be a leading man.

Pretty much everyone else here is wasted talent. Shatner got me to chuckle a couple of times, but no one else even came close. I actually really like Nicole Sullivan (she was on MadTV, but also had a memorable recurring role in Scrubs) and Tim Bagley (he had a great recurring character on Monk), but these actors don't have anything funny or even sensical to work with. There was a joke in the pilot where Nicole and the actor playing her husband just babbled for about ten seconds when faced with a question they didn't want to answer. They tried to deliver the joke as best they could, but when it came down to it, it didn't make any sense and wasn't funny at all.

I could go on about the reasons I found this show completely terrible and don't find it worth my time for subsequent outings, but I'll be glued to the computer all day if I do.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this. But as I said, it's possible that's intentional to make Shatner's character funnier.

Like, Ted is the lead man on How I Met Your Mother. But the rest of the cast play off of him. Barney is my favorite character on that show. You kind of love to hate him.

And the new addition to Shit My Dad Says, the gay guy Tim Bagley, that's now his house cleaner. (well he was the DMV guy and the restaurant guy, so not new) Great addition! I'm not sure why, but I like watching gay guys being extra gay. Plus, him and Shatner are total opposites, so that leaves room for endless lolz. Just like on Will and Grace or the new show, Modern Family. The fat gay guy is my favorite on the show. My gawd, I'm in tears laughing. He does that part SO perfect!

Speaking of Modern Family. I didn't like that style of filming at first when shows like the Office came out. But now I like it. It's funny when they say or do something and their eyes quickly look at the camera then away. In the old days, that would be unprofessional. Now it's scripted, lol. I love it.
