I will be in NYC from 6/8 thru 6/13. (I figure I'd rather be in San Francisco for my birthday.) PM me if you would consider sharing a room. Hotels in NYC are expensive.

Hotels in New York are not cheap. Remember, just because the show is in Manhattan, doesn't mean you need to go for a hotel there. Brooklyn and Queens are both wonderful nearby boroughs with cheaper hotels.
Edit: Just read about this new hotel that's opening up in March in Downtown Brooklyn (which is only minutes from the venue) called the Aloft Brooklyn. The rooms seem to be 129 per night. Not the cheapest in the world but they probably have lots of openings (because they are new).

last time i stayed in jersey, which was a good bit cheaper (and closer to home for the return trip) but provided some bafflement on getting back via the subways and nj transit. if you go that route, have a return trip planned out so as not to have to figure it out on the fly.

I am pretty sure that is most definitely NOT how NYC hotels work. Especially in Brooklyn.

Unfortunately, Hotwire doesn't give enough information to make that sort of decision first. The user reviews are visible, though.
I'm actually pretty interested in
the Pod Hotel. It's an interesting concept. And so far they haven't had any bedbug reports.

If you type the following:
hotel loc: 94 Avenue A, New York, NY 10009
into Google maps, you can see the hotels near the venue (the sidewalk right?), with links to them. you can also see how far away they are visually.
ain't technology great!

I stayed at the best place 2 years ago in above the Dominos near the corner of Allen and Houston in the LES (near the Australian Pie Shop at 1st and 1st). Only a few blocks from the venue. A 2 bedroom apartment I found on craigslist. A cute Chinese girl rented it to us, but I can't find her details now. Maybe if you just walk around lower Manhattan and ask any cute Chinese girls you see - you might be able to find it.
Be careful though. Her key to the front door didn't work. Luckily someone else coming home at 3am let me in. (I had a bit of a pub crawl on the way home - there were bands playing in bars all the way down 1st Avenue)
I heart NY

This website has some cool places you can rent.
http://www.airbnb.com/search
Sam and I used it when we went to Italy, and we saved loads of money. Maybe some folks might want to stay in an apartment instead of a hotel for an extended weekend?

You guys should join Couchsurfing.org, very cool way to meet people and stay places for free. I used to receive surfers until I had kids. But in case of extreme need, I live on the Jersey side of the Hudson, a 10 minute commute from Manhattan.

Wow. This is a fantastic resource. Definitely looking into it. And I'd totally be up for arranging a group stay.

So, I used the airbnb.com site and found an apartment about a block and half away from the Sidewalk Café:
http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/65384
"Down Under Best Weston "
Apartment - Entire home/apt · 140 Avenue B, New York, NY 10009, United States
It's available from June 17-19 for $225/night or $1400 for a full week. It can fit 4 people, so imagine a Manhattan apartment for $56.25 a night.
This guy also has some other things available, including a larger, full-blown apartment starting on the 19th and possibly a 3 BR duplex opening in a few weeks.
Anyway, any one else is on crashing at this place? It's literally around the corner from the Sidewalk Café.
Please send PM me so it pings my email. Work is busy, so I don't cruise these forums as often as I should...

Umm, Noah? Those availability dates are all after the event. I hope you didn't make plans for the wrong weekend...

Wow. EPIC fail there on travel dates. Luckily I didn't make any reservations.
...
Now I have to check my plane tickets...
....
<furious checking of email and AirTran's website>
Nope those are good. PHEW. Okay, so let's check airbnb with the PROPER dates this time. Oi.

So... the the AirBnB thing just didn't work out for me. It was like juggling too many chainsaws. :-\ Probably more a consequence of my current end-of-semester schedule than anything.
Anyway, I have booked a room at the Hotel Eurostars Wall Street (
http://www.hoteleurostarswallstreet.com) for Friday and Saturday nights. At $180/night, it's pretty damn good for Manhattan, but I'm more than happy to share with someone who's doing a precision strike visit like me.
