Why was judge 1 not counted in the tally?
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Oh wow, really? I didn't check the numbers, I was just assuming that all the judges' rankings were taken into account for the final ranking. That is totally weird. It would be nice to know which judges' rankings were used.

Doesn't really change much. You still win, hands down. Congrats!

Ah, trying to figure out the wonders of the Nur Ein.

We have 6 judges this time around and one alternate (Spintown). In a case like yesterday, in which we almost hit midnight before we had gotten all the votes in, I would've went with Spin's vote in the missing judge's stead but the judge appeared. Spin's vote will also help in cases of tiebreakers.

As for the win without the popular vote (insert Bush joke here), it happens. FBF got some top scores but got middle of the road score as well, while Merisan stayed at the top of the pack and got several second place votes which was enough for the win.

This judging round was really all over the board. Congrats to DJ Ranger Den! Only a few points out of winning this one.

It's been fun competing with you all, and the feedback has been brutal yet appreciated. I hope some of you consider joining the next SpinTunes in June when Nur Ein!!! is completed.

And I do believe we've broken the curse at being perennially last in every contest. We almost made it to round 3! Good luck to those moving onward.

Brevity Reviews:

The whole idea of the **autobiographical** challenge is that it makes it HARD to just change any person's name to Ginger. Ginger is a root, a spice, a TV character, a name, a pop star, a rock drummer, a color…there were so many directions to take this.

Abbott and Hines - What you should have done is lied and actually given a "particular reason" for blaming it on ginger. That I would have respected.
Billy's Little Trip - "I knew a girl named Ginger in a band."
Boffo Yux Dudes - Interesting, but effortless.
Bram Tant - At the open mike I run I wait for songs like this to go take a pee.
DJ Ranger Den - Interesting, with effort.
Frankie Big Face - "I knew a girl named Ginger (wink wink)."
Glen Raphael - Funky and fun.
Hunky (aka Jon Eric) - "Yo, I knew a girl named Ginger." But I laughed you to the top of my list, so go figure. Why weren't you this daring last year?
John Kloberdanz - "I [SNARE!] knew [SNARE!] a girl [SNARE!] named [SNARE!] Ginger."
Luke Henley - I regret not putting you at the top of my list. This one was one of my favorites and now it think it was the best song.
Manhattan Glutton - See, ginger didn't have to be the primary subject of the song, people. Rock!
Merisan - Fantastic, but I wish I could feel some sweat in these songs. A really great accordion solo or something. You keep bringing your A- game.
Paco del Stinko - "I watched a character named Ginger (oh whoooaaaa is me)."
Ross Durand - I like this in the same way I love Luke's song.
WreckdoM - Blame it on the Residents!
WSA - Death Cab for Geddy

Hey guys.

I am having a horrible, tragedy of a week. I won't wah-wah about it. I will say it's gonna be rough song-writery for me next week, but I THINK I have it under control.
I am fully going to do reviews and do have opinions of everyone. And I so so very much appreciated all the feedback. I agreed and benefitted with everything said and I feel that all improvements that I make have a large part to do with the criticisms I get around here; which I value very muchly. Lot of talent around here. And a lot of improvement around the board; which I'm happy to be a part of as I feel I am improving as well.

Reviews soon. Hopefully for my very-late-fight too. :)

   Great comment (though this week, I wouldn't have actually applied it to the song you applied it to). But I know that feeling. At OM nights I have to drink so much beer just to keep a steady stream of urine on tap, as it were.

Sorry for not reviewing. I did listen to the songs but haven't had time to properly sit down and concentrate on 'em yet.

jast wrote:Billy's Little Trip: Great sound. Vocals are not terribly great (yeah I know you have excuses) but I guess they qualify as "okay". Mostly. In this song, there's something that bugs me about them more than the pitchiness: they sound "weak", meaning that you're not using your voice to maximum effect. Sort of doesn't work very well for a song like this. I don't personally like the composition here but I shall not take it out on you. On a (hopefully) more objective note, however, the chorus mostly fails to set itself apart from the verses. It does that a bit, sure, but I think it would have been much more effective had the chorus taken up more of the soundscape, if that makes any sense. Lyrics are decent. The story is nothing to sneeze at; I wish you had spent more time developing it though. It seems like you're telling it at 4x speed. There are two ways around that: either make the song longer or focus more on individual scenes and mention the transitions between them only in passing.
I hear ya. My mellow voice is weak because I don't practice. I feel it in me. I know I have soul. But it's something that needs to be practiced to pull it off flawlessly. If it was easy, everyone could sound great, lol. My more aggressive voice is more acceptable I think because higher energy and aggression while singing leaves room for less perfection. Because in real life when someone is yelling, their vocal range can be all over the place and it's more about getting your feelings across.

As far as the story. I had a lot more written, but I'm trying very hard to come in around 2:30 or at least under 3:00, so I grabbed the first part, a part somewhere in the middle and the conclusion. I would have really liked to have gotten it all in, because I feel I cut out a lot of clever and more engaging lines. My songs tend to be closer to 5:00 when I'm done, which is bad for a competition like this I feel.
Even though it sounds like I'm making excuses, I really do pay attention to these comments. Thanks for the constructive criticism.

Generic wrote: BLT - Trying to remember what this riff reminds me of. Oh well. Clever lyrics. I like "We're not the hottest power trio around." I don't mind a sour note in the vocal from time to time, but I wish you had taken more time to make sure the first line of the chorus was on-key. You can get away with a lot of sloppiness (not just in vocals, by the way) if you just nail the first and last few notes of each verse and chorus.
That's not what I wrote, but that's closer to what I wanted to get across. Now I'm going to change it to that, thanks. Check is in the mail.

And my goal is to nail all the notes. But it seems like I don't notice things until I give the whole mix a good listen, which is quite often after the song has been submitter. But that advice makes sense. Thank, Jo Nair.

I like your vocals, dude. A little pitchy from time to time, but the laid back feel is good. Definitely my favorite song of the bunch.

I like them too. Maybe not pitch-perfect, but I'm not going to pretend like all my vocals are either. They sound good. They fit the song. The song is good overall. You did a good job. :)

Hey guys- been missing the competition, but I screwed up my first recording of Blame it on Ginger and blew it fair and square. No biggie, because when I got home and re-recorded after the deadline there was a lot less time pressure so Caleb was able to do amazing things- please go check out what he was able to work his magic on here-

And no, I don't know how he managed to make me sound so cute without using hamster mode
