Well, depending on what you need and what kinda machine you're on, the free stuff I've been using lately includes:
  • Open Office (MS Office Clone)
  • Gimp (image editing)
  • Audacity (multitrack audio, comes with lame to make MP3s)
  • Microsoft Security Essentials (virus)
  • MySQL (database)
  • xampp (webserver and php)
  • perl (scripting)
  • Bloodshed C++ (programming, if you know C++)
  • Thunderbird and Firefox (email, web)
  • PrimoPDF (.pdf file creator)
  • jing (motion screen captures)

Side note, the future of OpenOffice is a bit uncertain right now, so you might want to choose LibreOffice instead. It's exactly the same thing, just with a different name.

Or just start using Google Docs. Reaper, btw, is quasi-free for recording and I LOVE it.

Don't forget Chrome for web-browsing!

And Skype for making video calls.

new laptop, down loaded Audacity. at the mixer controll bar which gives you the output volume, the input volume ant the third box is the choosen input. That box is blank. Automatically uses the built in mike on the laptop. Whats up with that ? Any one ever had this problem. Im used to old Cakewalk Music Creator and cant find a free download of that. thanks james
