Official Unofficial Wiki Thread (SFBase.net)

This is the official wiki support thread. If you see others posting about the wiki in other threads, please redirect them to this thread.
Summary
A wiki is a website containing many articles which are creatable and editable by anybody (in this case, registered users to avoid spam).
I have created a Song Fight wiki at
sfbase.net. I own the domain, I pay for the hosting, and I set all this up. No, I'm not going to lose my job/die/quit song fight/etc. any time soon. If the wiki gains more traffic, I can provide wiki dumps for the paranoid among us.
Goals
- to integrate archive data in a friendly, linkable way
- to provide a place for artists to elaborate on their songs
- to chronicle Song Fight's history in wiki form
- to centralize Song Fight's "lost data" that is spread over this forum, other wikis, and other websites
- to document frequently asked Song Fight questions that are asked over and over on the forums
The Basics
- Artists imported from the archive have pages named "Artist Name (artist)".
- Fights imported from the archive have pages named "Song Title (Song Fight! title)".
- Links are automatically generated to "Song Title (Artist Name song)" - this is where you fill in all your dirty song meanings and information.
- When you sign up, you have a User:(username) page. You can use that to play around or document your life.
- Pages that start with Template: should probably not be touched unless you are familiar with wiki editing.
- All other pages are free-reign. I try to keep things as Wikipedia-like as possible for consistency and lack of thinking.
Contributing
First, you need to sign up. Sorry, this is necessary due to excessive spam issues. Then, you can start editing! Wiki markup is pretty easy. You can learn about it
here.
The first thing you'll probably want to do is change the blurb on your artist page. Go for it. Just don't remove the templates - text that looks like {{template}}. In this case, the templates include artist information imported from the archive. Starting on 9/11/2011, it should be safe to edit these pages and never worry about re-import conflicts again.
Beyond that, you can:
- Add 'notes' about your songs (the notes link on both the fight and artist pages) - Jan has some great examples
- Upload songs or demos you never submitted
- Document common Song Fight terms
- Document common Song Fight forum questions
- Import data from other Song Fight wikis
- Generally help new folks figure out this wacky world of Song Fighting by improving and adding articles
Have fun!
Change Log
- 2012-04-29: Set-up a wiki faux-database and began importing Nur Ein. Dynamically create M3U playlists.
- 2011-09-11: Moved imported artist data to templates
- 2011-07-04: Wiki created

That's a great idea.

I'm thinking of merging "X featuring Y" songs into X and then making a note of it somewhere. Yea/nay? Thoughts on how to accomplish this?
Relatedly, any ideas on what to do with "X & Y"?
Yes, I am obsessed with cleaning up this data.

I've contemplated this before. While parsing "X feat. Y" is simple there are other cases that are less straightforward. "X & Y" doesn't necessarily always mean it's a combination of two separately submitting artists, for example, "Barrels, Leaves & Strings". Ditto for "X and Y", for example, "AC and his Piano". Also there are a lot of possible tokens that split up a name, e.g. "vs.", "+", "F.", "with", etc. And commas don't always mean the same thing, e.g. in "AG Beats, Viktor Walters, and Nate C" each section probably could be split into a separate artist unlike "Barrels, Leaves & Strings". Then there are collabs where the name has the other artists' names in ist like "Uncle Boltoph and the Deshead Kid".
http://sfjukebox.org/artists/Barrels%2C ... 26+Strings
http://sfjukebox.org/artists/AC+and+his+Piano
http://sfjukebox.org/artists/ADD+vs.+BLUE
http://sfjukebox.org/artists/Azwel+%2B+Open+Breeze
http://sfjukebox.org/artists/The+Styop+ ... ll+Mexican
http://sfjukebox.org/artists/Revel+Yth+with+c.layne
http://sfjukebox.org/artists/AG+Beats%2 ... and+Nate+C
http://sfjukebox.org/artists/Uncle+Bolt ... eshead+Kid
So, good luck with that.
One way to address this would be to have a link from an artist that does a search that would match any page that has any whitespace delimited token from the artist's name in it, possibly excluding the joining words/characters from the search.
Another way would be at time of entry, for people to list who the artists involved are, regardless of how they formatted the combined name.

Yes, I'm thinking that if I do take on the 'and's, it'll have to be done selectively. I am of the opinion that if two people collaborated and came up with a fancy name, the fancy name should stay - but if two people collaborated and used their names merely conjoined, discretion is necessary.
Another thing on my radar is fixing more typos. I was using an
edit distance algorithm while cleaning up Niveous Presents data (what I'm currently working on).

It warms my heart that you know about Levenshtein Distance and that you would use it to solve a problem. There might be hope for you yet.

OK, have fun. If you come up with something good I'd love to get the code so I can port it to Java and incorporate it into the jukebox.

Let justice be served. !
P.S. I'm on an airplane and can't tell if that is working. GoGo is giving me an error page. MG tell me if the syntax is wrong please.
Later I'll redirect the sf.net wiki link to your wiki.

Differences From Song Fight!
Strict due dates (except for Round Zero)
Each title has a mandatory challenge
Rigorous timeline - approximately 5 to 6 days to compose and record
Only judges matter - no random internet travelers and proxies
Song submission is less automated
That is even possible?

Works great. You always seem to be on a plane... why is that? Are you John Denver?

So guys, I'm running into PHP memory issues on DreamHost. Anyone have any suggestions, aside from upgrading to a more expensive host?
I tried restricting PHP's memory usage, running under a different user, and turning on various levels of caching.
PS: It doesn't happen often, so it's not a huge problem. However, it appears I'm working the wiki software more than it was intended.

Submit a Dreamhost support ticket. They make a big deal about trying to make PHP work well and of course MediaWiki is a supported one-click install. They have been bitches to me in the past about my non-PHP stuff and made spurious claims about how PHP is "way better for memory" and so on (using reasoning that makes no sense to people who actually write software) so I mean, take them to task for this.

I did open a support ticket. It wasn't very helpful, since most of their standard response was about WordPress and ended with "upgrade to a VPS!" Yeah, right.
So I'm tweaking MediaWiki settings here and there. If I can get more detailed performance data out of MediaWiki, I can dive straight into the code and do whatever's necessary.
Edit: Alright, I'm updating MediaWiki manually too, since the one-click-schtick is behind a few versions. Maybe then I can use php5.3 and ??? profit?

php5.3 made a serious improvement. I'm impressed. The site seems much more responsive now.

Here's a request:
Can someone with more knowledge than I've got help out with this page?
http://sfbase.net/wiki/Category:Live_Fight_titles
I know most, but not all of the live fights...
"Hot Lunch" (San Francisco, 2001, not archived on the site)
??? (Lancaster, 2002)
"Unless I Change My Mind" (Seattle, 2003)
"The Chair We Share" (Austin, 2004)
??? (Boston, 2005)
"All Tan" (Santa Cruz, 2006)
??? (Atlanta, 2007)
??? (Tampa, 2008)
"They Meet" (Spokane, 2009)
"Hello My Old Heart" (San Francisco, 2010)
"Isle Dauphine" (New York, 2011)
"Strictly Speaking" (Seattle, 2012)
I don't even know if there
was a live fight in Lancaster 2002 (anyone?), because that live show happened around the time Collin got sick of running the site. The optional challenge on all of these was "Live Recording."

2005: I Know My Rights
2007: Thank God for Memphis
2008: Calico Alley
And there's also 2008's "Cute Boots" which was a livefight but for a SFP not an SFL.
