The Last Afternoon of a Woman He Only Thought He Knew

Still tinkering with this but... it's a weird 7/8 ballad I guess

That winter was colder far than any that I remember.
Snow fell on snow and turned to ice where it lay.
The girl lived above me, and the last time I saw her
Was two or three days before Valentine's Day.

The sound of her typewriter was loud sometimes late at night
And I heard her cry once or twice in the day
Each morning I watched her as she walked to the telephone
And shivered there talking, but to who I can't say.

That afternoon she played the same record endlessly
Long into the night - it wasn't easy to bear.
I woke the next morning to the cries of her children
At a window left open to the cold morning air.

We broke down the front door with the help of a passer-by
The smell of the gas so strong it made our throats raw
She left bread for the toddler and some milk for the baby
And a towel soaked with water jammed under their door

They closed the doors gently on the back of the ambulance.
My breath froze before me as they drove her away.
A day or two later her husband came by
And moved in his mistress, on Valentine's Day.

I think of her now and them, and how she would talk to me,
A foolish old man with my hair turned to gray.
Somewhere I still have the card that I bought,
Half-meaning to give her on Valentine's Day.

Yes, somewhere I still have the card that I bought
Half-meaning to give her on Valentine’s Day.

Dear Sister,

I write you now in complete amazement. Do you know your skill? Can't you see your abilities? How I shudder to think that you'll go to waste unseen, unknown, unloved, discounted like a bird with a broken wing.

But I have a broken wing and I have a ruptured heart. And all of the others are retarded and stupid. Oh, when can I visit you? Please God say that she wants me to. Let's ignore the fact that I'll never believe in you.

Is it possible to grow, to die, to learn to lie, my Brother Fire, at the same time? It's the rare circumstance, this plutonic romance, my deviant dance. Will you listen to me?

But I have a broken wing and I have a ruptured heart. I know I've a job but all the others here are retarded and stupid. Oh, when can I visit you? Please God say that she wants me to. As I ignore these moans please ignore the fact that I'll never believe in you.

Sincerely yours,

v1
Sitting in the waiting room
Thinking about all the years
Wondering how time slips away
Leaving lines on his face as souvenirs
He thinks of a walk into a restaurant
Not expecting more than a bite to eat
Walking out with a phone number
and a time and place to meet

Take away the pain
Take away the pain

v2
He remembers getting married on a Saturday
And Having their first baby on a Monday night
He remembers Rushing home for a goodnight kiss
When they were making up from their first fight
They both love Listening to their old records
And pasting pictures in a memory book
He loves holding hands and remembering
Her cute little smile and her innocent look

Take away the pain
Take away the pain

v3
The doctor arrives and says she is resting
Says it won't take too much longer now
If they want to they can see her
One at a time is the only way how
So he forces a smile and he walks on in
As he is trying to savor their last goodbye
She looks at him and then she tells him
That she never loved him, she was living a lie

Take away the pain
Take away the pain

The Last Afternoon Of A Woman He Only Thought He Knew - Paco del Stinko

She came to see him yesterday, dressed in crimson bands
She'd never smell the antiseptic, never feel the latex hands
Three thirty on the button, green eyes and a blue mask
The singing shing of stainless steel, peering in to what had passed

The morning came - And then it passed
Yesterday's afternoon - Would be her last

For a brief moment there, he traveled back in time
Locked on to her frozen stare, he thought this heart is mine
The echoes of her warm laughter, an avalanche of salt
Fingers sliding from his hand, the long shadow down the hall

The morning came - And then it passed
Yesterday's afternoon - Would be her last

He met her through a guy he met online (A sister of a friend)
They became inseperable once upon a time (But had to break for lack of bend)

The morning came - And then it passed
Yesterday's afternoon - Would be her last

Mistakes can come often - Hard stances can soften
Those we once knew - Can soon be forgotten
And those that we didn't - Don't always stay hidden
A lie made true - Against our bidding

Their house had always been so clean
But he came home at 4:15
And found that every room was torn apart
He called for her but only heard
Some music that was loud and blurred
Behind the door where she would do her art

The room was such a mess inside
She hadn't even tried to hide
The case of wine and several lines of powder
Men's shoes were by the door in pairs
A radio that wasn't theirs
The disco music getting even louder

Some plates were smashed, the dog was gone
His car was parked across the lawn
The open gate was swinging in the breeze
Her credit cards and all their cash
Were not inside the bag of trash
That held her business suits and office keys

The only trace of what they'd had
The photos of her mom and dad
Were bare, unfaded sections on the wall
And then with clearing eyes he knew
That everything he thought was true
Was gone for good 'cause she'd erased it all

the shutters are cracked
and he's wracking his brain
he's seen her before
at least he's pretty sure
that twitch of the hips
the way her hair flips
is unmistakable

as she crosses the street
he shifts in his seat
squinting his eyes
was he drunk at the time?
in a checkout line?
he thinks he's seen her before
it's unshakable

and then

Crash! Crash! Crash!
her legs fly up in the
Smash! Smash! Smash!
she hits the windshield there's a
Gash! Gash! Gash!
across her pretty face
which he still can't place
so he's racing out the door
before his feet hit the floor

he's at the scene of the crime
the engine's still whining
as he pulls her from the wreck
he thinks she broke her neck
laid out on the ground
he looks her up and down
and as he dials 911
he has the realization
that she's a stranger

and this is the last afternoon
of a woman he only thought he knew

The windowpane shows you
the same thing the girl who knows you-s
been staring at.. has to say of prophecy
and shiny things

what a noble thing
not to let her know,
so you leave no waste behind -
don't let it show
you save face, and that's okay

CH
cuz it's the last afternoon
she's gonna do this
and you know it's her birthday
so for one more day, pretend that
you know her enough
to suit up and say "love"
say, love…

she hears a lot but you're not talking
it's typical for this type of day
and wedding rings are interesting…things
she watches signs but mostly sees you walking
she's keeping track of your little ways
but nothing pays
and nothing stays

CH
she'll close around her self like she opened
ah, but you'd notice that
…if it was important

and it's the last afternoon
she's gonna do this
just pretend that
you know all this enough
one more day
to say love
say love...
say love...
love.

BILLY and the PSYCHOTICS

I pull away from you
and you can feel it too
(you feel it too)
But why is everything so black
when everything is all too real?

How long have you been watching me?
How long have you known?
Everyone has got a cross to bear
but only some bear it alone

CH
You don't know anything
of my reality
when you're the one -
the one who is drowning

I pull away from you
and you can feel it too
But why is everything so black
when everything, everything is all too real?

CH
..in all the lies of my last time
..in all the lies of my last time

As T.C. Elliott

A dangerous smile, your finger nails grow so long
You like to bite when you start kissing me
Where's the girl I fell in love with?
Something's changed, I wonder what it could be

I wish that it was like it use to be
On that afternoon
But now you only come and see me
By the light of the moon

You use to wake up with the light of day
But now you sleep until the light fades away
You were so sweet but something's changing
You like it rough you say it will be okay

I miss that look you use to give me
Now you look like you want a bite to eat
You never come and see me in the day time
It's always dark when you want to come to me
