Hey, it's a board full of musicians. Let's talk about some music news. Why not?
The biggest music news lately has been SXSW. Did any Songfighters get a chance to go this year?
There is always a lot to talk about when it comes to the festival. Usually it's a lot of indie and lesser known bands getting some spotlight. This year, it was Green Day returning after Billie Joe Armstrong's rehab stint; Justin Timberlake after his Jimmy Fallon stint; and Prince doing a set that seemed to have lasted for six hours or so. But the weirdest thing I've heard about coming out of SXSW is the Afghan Whigs set... which included Usher.

Yeah, I've checked out every tid bit of SXSW that SPIN (which is my primary form of music news and I recommend everyone subscribe and get email notifications of new e-zine news. Love it!) has been covering, including the above mentioned.
My big happy at the moment is Dave Grohl's Sound City. I'm looking forward to watching it in it's entirety. I've been reading the bits since SPIN started interviews with Grohl about the rockumentary. I've been a Grohl fan (not a gushing one. I do have my pride, GAWD!) for a long time, but now he is of Rock Hero status and I think 2013 is going to be his big year of great notoriety. And let's face it, he's a fricken cool guy.
Things I've noticed in new rock news: The term "time repeats it's self" is very prevalent at the moment. I think we're on the cusp of another grunge uprising. But god forbid they call it grunge. They're calling it everything but grunge, lol. And I'll be honest, I'm not disappointed at all, even though I'm "supposed to be" too old for that now. Fuck that, I love noise rock. Helmet has been 50% of my listening enjoyment in the past couple weeks. I think Page Hamilton is the man! Don't be surprised if you hear some drop C riffs and power rhythms from me in the future. Page inspired me to do an original BLT song for the first time in almost 2 years. Love it! Love it! Love it!

I enjoy Noise rock as well and I fully encourage you to bring more Helmet-like sounds to Songfight. (As long as it doesn't sound like the Seeing Eye Dog album which was not great.)

Damn, Michelle Shocked is a babbling droid.
PJ Harvey would be AWESOME as lead singer for a Nirvana reunion! Even if it was just for one album and a few music vids. I'm disappointed by "almost".
Carbon fiber guitar is nothing new. But those 3D copy guitars are nuts. The
spider Les Paul copy is nift-a-roni.

Speaking of POST post grunge, Pearl Jam is in the studio and just finished recording some "strings" with Incubus guitarist, Mike Einziger. They say "strings" which might be interesting. Einzger has some really unique instrument styles and has some REALLY cool instrumentals he's composed in the past. I'm looking forward to hearing the guys now in their late 40s early 50s rockin'.

If I was going to go that route, Paco, I would rather do This Week in Songfight but alas, we haven't had "Songfight Radio" in quite a while.

Farg, an mp3 is NOT a material object and therefore should not fall under the definition of "phonorecord". RIAA is splitting hairs.

Ghost B.C.'s new album delayed because four different CD manufacturers refuse to print the blasphemous art work.
Not that I care about Ghost B.C., but the fact that religion is brain washed deeper than freedom of art and expression.

Thom and Ted collaborating on a pro gun song.

"
Radiohead and Ted Nugent are working on a pro-hunting musical based on the children's book We're Going on a Bear Hunt. "In the story, right, these kids go looking for this huge momma grizzly, and when they find it, they just run," a source said. "Nuge and Thom reckoned it would be more fun if the kids just pulled out some serious firepower and blew the damn bear away — then skinned it and brought the hide home to their folks." Could be nice to hear Thom Yorke be pro-something for once. (via the Guardian)"
but of course, this was yesterdays news.

SPIN's best new bands of April. A Scottish post punk band Causal Sex caught my ear. Pretty good.
