The Song Fight Bulletin Board

Hey everybody,

My mother, bless her heart, has convinced me to create a compilation CD full of songs that children will enjoy listening to. This CD will be distributed as part of a "care" package to chronically ill children in hospitals. Here in Pennsylvania to start, then possibly spreading across the rest of the US.

I've already spoken to Jim of Seattle, who has agreed (a couple months ago actually) to lend Madi's "Martians Are Going to Eat Us" to the project. That song is a very good example of what I'm looking for here.

If you're interested in being on this compilation, write a children's song in the next couple weeks and post it to this thread. I will make this an official side fight and host the songs on sf.net using the coverfight voting system so we can all pick our favorites. And those that I think are of sufficient quality will be included on this compilation CD. There's no money in it, but I can probably swing a copy of the CD for the artists who participate.

I've promised my mother that I'll have the CD's contents ready for December distribution. So I'm going to make the deadline for this side fight MONDAY OCTOBER 18. Songs can be posted to this thread before that, and I'll just collect them and put them in the vote machine after the deadline.

Here are some ideas for types of songs that kids would probably be into, in case you need some help getting started:

Goofy songs
Story songs
Goofy story songs
Lullabyes
Dances (like the Hand Jive, remember these are sick kids)
Sing-a-longs
Grody songs (within reason. kids like boogers though.)

Yes, but those were covers. This is for originals, which their authors have copyright control over. Submissions to this compilation will be allowing use of the song for the compilation but will retain ownership of the songs. Who wants another silly cover of the Teddy Bear's Picnic anyway?

my songskirmish song is kind of a kid's song. at least 2 nine year old kids seemed to like it enough to be singing it to each other while baking molasses cookies (so says Jim).

I'm up for either a goofy story song or a lullaby. Hell, people say that most of my songs put them to sleep, so that shouldn't be a problem at all...

Of course, with all this sidefightin, I don't know how I'm gonna find time to submit to regular fights...

i will tell you that i'm going to avoid putting "buck up, little campers"-style songs on the CD. my goal is to make them laugh so hard or feel so good that they plumb forget about their troubles for a little while.

but do whatever you want for the side fight. there's a place for that kind of song, too, although it might be more of an adult concept.

also, i wonder, would using samples from tv shows or whatnot be allowed? would copywrite issues come into play on something like this?

I'm about to go on holidays for a week with a group of old school mates and their families - lots of kids.

I was going to take my laptop and get the kids to write a songfight entry for me - but this sounds like a more worthwhile project for them to work on.

hmmm... me write a kid's song ... this sounds interesting... i don't know if i can write a kid's song... but i could sure as hell try...

or do a collab for one... with someone... cause i don't know if i can get myself to write child based sort of lyrics... if someone else wants to write lyrics for me... i'd be more then happy to try to make it a song \m/

My "Talk About Your Feelings" has seen good play in the 3-6 year old set. All my son's therapists loved it, and the kids get the message. I would think it would be a positive message for this project. I am doing a new mix on it.

I am working on some others for my kids. If they are done in any reasonable time I'll post them for this as well.

My song "In the Lair of the Zombie Kittens" is requested so much by my niece and nephew that they wore out their CD and I had to send them a new one. You can use it if you want (it's aninstrumental):

I'm gonna try to make time to do a song this weekend, kind of my 'Schoolhouse Rock' tribute. They weren't just fun Saturday Morning cartoons, there was some really good music in Schoolhouse Rock.

copyright is an issue if you want to be on the CD. everything has to be free and clear.

(this means as much as I'd like to, i can't use jack's song, because it cribs the melody from "The Lion Sleeps Tonight")
