Happy Garlic Day.

I hope all the Songfighters in Boston are doing okay out there.

QotD: What are some of your favorite guitar solos?

I got the idea to ask that after watching a performance of "Highway Don't Care" by Tim McGraw featuring Taylor Swift & Keith Urban and my #1 reaction: Holy shit, I didn't know Keith Urban played guitar like that!

Oh man. Too many. "All Along The Watchtower" by Hendrix has gotta be one of the greatest. And, Niv, check out Vince Gill's playing for a smooth country guy that'll make you go wow. Guy can tear it up.

How about this one for understated. It stars about 1:39, but dig the whole track. Ginger Baker on drums, too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbW_wcl6b7I

I live about 15 minutes from Boston now. You don't have to be familiar with the city to be weirded out by these pictures. Crazy. http://news.yahoo.com/photos/an-empty-c ... 77327.html

I have quite a few fav solos. Eddie Van Halen can really create some interesting finger techniques, like on "Eruption", so awesome!
But I've always been more of a slow soulful solo fan. I never got into the Steve Veigh craziness. I mean, it's good, but eh.
Give it to me with soul!
Allen Collins' "Free Bird"
David Gilmore's "time" and "comfortably numb"
Jimmy Page's "heartbreaker" and "Stairway to Heaven"
Brian May's "Bohemian Rhapsody"
Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Texas Flood"...behind his back live!
Don Felder's "hotel California"

That's just off the top of my head. Too many to remember.

I know! I saw this on my news this morning. Kind of eerie.

Not a big guitar solo devotee. And I don't say that just because I can't play a decent one to save my life.

I still feel compelled to mention Zappa's "Watermelon In Easter Hay."

Garbage & Screaming Females collaborated on a cover of "Because The Night". Marissa Paternoster is one hell of a guitarist and her solo in this song is a beast.

^ Too processed. It sounds like a synth/keyboard. But that is a great cover!

I do like Garbage and Screaming Females though. It's nice to see the Joan Jet working again. :D j/k

Hey Niv. Interesting fact. I was shown Screaming Females by my musician friend because he said, "hey Chris, check this out. This song sounds kind of like that song you did a few years ago" I said, you'll need to give me more info than that, Eggy. He played my song, guess what it was, Niv? .......are you sitting down? God's Thumb! (the music, not the lyrics)You wrote it! I did the music! And God's Thumb is on the front page here on SF right now on the "five years ago today"! And Song Fight has the same initials as Screaming Females! And they have a line in the song "dressed for church and holding hands". :/

This is crazy coincidental that you brought them up right now AND that you and I both like them. Do you ever think things happen for a reason? Like the universe is trying to give you a sign, but you are not paying enough attention?
Maybe the universe is telling us that I should write music and you write lyrics, then find a chick that looks like a 14 year old boy to rock it.

....or maybe it's just a coincidence :?

The Screaming Females, "it all means nothing"

Billy's Little Trip, "God's Thumb"

I did a few versions of God's Thumb and the one he had didn't have the acoustic intro. It just started in hard and was really hard and heavy all the way through. I didn't submit that version. But Eggy is a music producer, so he hears and picks up on things.
I hear what he meant, but it's not "that" similar to me. It's just weird that he mentioned it right when that song came out, (he gets demos of all new music before release) then you posted that vid.

And to add to this coincidence chain, Screaming Females are from New Brunswick, NJ where I used to live.

The kismet connection was that Niv and I were destined to work together, which we have. ;)
