HANDCLAPS!

I think handclaps in songs are basically the best thing ever. Generally they make a so-so song a bad-ass rocker. I started making a playlist of the best songs that feature handclaps, but it's somewhat short right now:

Rilo Kiley - Frug
Apples in Stereo - Stream Running Over
Tilly and the Wall - Fell Down the Stairs

Yes I realize that all of those songs are pretty indie. So uh what songs do you guys love that feature handclaps?

(For those that haven't heard of Tilly and the Wall, they're this adorable band from Omaha, Nebraska, on Conor Oberst's other label, Team Love. Their whole album is available on their Team Love website. They also have an official not-record label website. Instead of a drummer, they have a girl that tapdances, and everybody else in the band stomps and claps and God damn it's cute, so several (all?) of their songs would qualify but this one's my favorite.)

XTC - "I'd Like That"
OK Go - "You're So Damn Hot"

Um... I think "centerfield" debunks your whole theory... that song stinks. AND it has handclaps.

Of course, baseball players will vehemently disagree.

So will John Fogerty fans.

I really dig Fogerty's tunes... except that one. It makes me cringe.

Ok, it makes me cringe because I was in a cover band that played that tune at ball dancers, and the idiots would request it three times a night "because it's a baseball dance". The only thing worse is being asked to play "brown-eyed girl" and " old time rock and roll" for the third time... or second.. hell, even just being asked.

Does every solo in an OZzy tune count? That guys ALWAYS clapping... and those tunes rock!

Beat Crusaders - "Hit in the USA"

(aka the opening theme to Beck. God I am a nerd.)

Oh, and I second Generic on "You're So Damn Hot."

does anyone else find this extremely odd? it's cool, but it just seems like it defeats the purpose of being on a record label. they should just join up with dirt cheap music or something.

My friends' band's last album release was called "Handclaps and Slapbacks". Check out the MP3 sample for "What's To Say". It's got backwards handclaps!

I dunno. Not so weird. It gets the music out there and if you dig it you can buy the album and support the band, and it gets the word out so you go see the live show when it's near, and you buy the t-shirt and whatever. Unconventional but sensible.

it may pay off in the long run, but they must have a lot of confidence in their artists to do something like that. i for one don't plan on buying the album and i doubt if they'll ever tour near me. central indiana gets shit for shows.

And that's what makes or breaks bands. Central Indiana.

pretty much. we are the crossroads of america...which means that every band drives through central indiana to get to where they are playing their show.

i just had to make everyone feel sorry for me because i don't get to see any cool shows without leaving the state.

If all your record label is doing is trying to sell CDs, then you should rethink that contract. This is actually one of the best ways for a touring band to generate revenue. In many cases, giving it away has pushed indie record sales way up. Promotional costs are zero, while the buzz factor is through the roof. Many new labels are less concerned about selling the CD than artist placement and tours. This is what the RIAA doesn't want to acknowledge. Hell, on the extreme other side of things, Price gives his CDs to everyone who comes to the show now.

"saturday night" by the bay city rollers.

"oh micky" by some chick from back in the late 70s/early 80s

i detest those songs. and they have prominent handclaps.

and that fogerty song, i'm not a big fan of, mostly as the handclaps sound like they are from a cheap casio.

i am a big fogerty fan though. and a big handclap fan.

I love when people quote lyrics and do it wrongly.... I don't own this song or listen to it, but I'm pretty sure it's "Hey Mickey", not "Say Mickey"...

c'mon TT, bust out that 45 and give it a spin... ;)

damn this is one nasty song!*

parapharased from the song..........

"Now when you take me by the hooves
Who's ever gonna know
And every time you move
I let a little more show
There's something you can use
We don't say no, Mickey
So come on and give it to me anyway you can
Anyway you want to do it
I'll take it like a man
Oh, please baby, please
Don't leave me in the damn, Mickey"
