The Song Fight Bulletin Board

We went and saw this, the latest Wes Anderson film, tonight. It was awesome! More of what you would expect from Wes Anderson, amazing inventive visuals, a zoo full of kooky characters, great sound and music. We really enjoyed the whacky story and there was some really excellent dialog too, maybe more so than in his past films.

The trailer looks amazing in the Wes Anderson kind of way! I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan and looking forward to this movie. I even like Darjeeling limited, which seems to get a bad rap. It was dark and clever in that way only he can pull off and still make me laugh.

I was extremely disappointed in this movie. Such potential, such a cast, such stunning visuals. I was annoyed through the whole movie that he never took advantage of his actors. For example, you put Bill Murray in your movie, you should let him do something Bill Murray-like. Instead, he is using your knowledge of Bill Murray to give the character a personality without lifting a finger. And so it goes with every other cameo in this movie, including Adrien Brody. What did he tell him to do? Look like Adrien Brody? Reminds me of our friend Rone Rivendale wrestling cardboard cutouts.

Fleshing out a character takes time. The movie would have been six hours long if they'd tried to give every single actor enough time to really get into their characters. I would have been fine with that but it seems hard to imagine that going over well with theaters. For me, trading on the persona of well known/character actors, particular Wes Anderson regulars, is an OK way to make the bit roles more enjoyable than if they were just generic non-entities played by unrecognizable actors.

I felt that way about Ray Liotta in the Muppets Most Wanted.

I thought this movie was beautiful and quirky as any Wes Anderson movie, but lacked any real emotional drama. I just left the theater without caring much about any of the characters or events. I hardly remember them.

Yeah, but it felt like the only reason for the role to start with was so you could put Bill Murray in the trailer.

So it's a Wes Anderson film, then.
