Dang, our movies forum has gone pretty stagnant, even more so than the boards in general. Did everybody stop seeing movies? Or stop caring? Or both?

We haven't been out to the movies in a bit but we rented Hobbit 2 tonight. I honestly felt like it was pretty meh. I didn't care for some of the stuff they made up to add into the story (she-elf loves dwarf man?!) and a lot of the action sequences were so long and complicated they got tiresome after a while. It wasn't completely terrible though. I'd give it a B-.

I think my evaluation of this movie was how a lot of the action sequences just seemed like video game challenges.

I feel that way about a lot of the CGI heavy action sequences in some movies these days, and definitely Hobbit 2 among them. I feel like that started being obvious and egregious for me with the first new Star Wars movie. I remember in one of the later new Star Wars movies too there was some scene with R2-D2 and C-3P0 going through a really difficult platform jumping sequence, and I almost reflexively started hitting the jump button. I think it's a pretty lame development for movies to become too close to their eventual game versions.

i thought it was pretty lame that the elves were just killing orcs without any great danger to themselves. orcs aren't pushovers. video games, yes, i agree.

I think it was the first Transformers movie that pioneered the technique.
