I want to be Tom Waits, so badly. I want to see it all through the yellow windows of the the evening train. I want to wander the streets lost after a heavy rain because the smells have all washed away. I'll call in my wolf tickets, stay off the main roads, and mix the buckshot with kerosene. I love the music and the world it lives in. Nothing makes me fell more manly than listening to Tom Waits. Rain Dogs is the first album of his I ever heard, and will always be my favorite I think. I really admire Marc Ribot's guitar playing on it, really distinctive and stylish.
My favorite song is is Bad Liver and a Broken Heart, because it's about heartbreak, drinking, and it's beautifully written, but mostly because I think it's actually about him, and that maybe he wrote it for Kathleen, as she's mentioned in the song. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but I believe it's true because I want to.

Very, very hard to choose one... so I'm going to choose two... one from the crooner era and one from freak era... and it's still too god damned hard...
Crooner era: Honorable mention to "Blue Valentine"... but I gotta go with "Kentucky Avenue"... it's one one of the few songs that gives me the shivers on occasion
Freak era: Well, since "Singapore" has already been mentioned, it's a little easier. I'll go with "Jockey Full of Bourbon"... the guitar parts on that blow me away. Obviously Tom Waits deserves the most credit for "Rain Dogs", but that album wouldn't have been the same without Marc Ribot's contributions!

There are 2 amazing must see episodes of Austin City Limits. One is Stevie Ray Vaughn, the other is Tom Waits.
He's one of the greats. I loved his scene with Iggy Pop the most in that Cigarettes and Coffee movie.
San Diego Serenade is my pick. It's beautiful and sad and perfect.

Hah! I love that one. I'm gonna say "Telephone Call From Istanbul" but there are a lot of great choices.
