I thought Bowie was really good. I think he usually is when he's given small roles. I liked that the movie felt like more was at stake than The Illusionist. It's got a nasty streak (those doves, for instance) that is a nice fit with the material. While it's not as brilliant as Memento, not much is. ...

Thanks for the reviews everyone. I probably won't have a chance to do any for this song, but I'll start reviewing next week. I like the Hell Yeahs particularly this week, partially because I am a fan of slant rhymes.

OK, so regarding the clackies... this is a lesson to uh, me, to listen to the song after encoding it. On my original wav file the clacks kinda bounce around waaaay in the background, and I liked that. I only listened to the mp3 I sent in after reading Mr. Cashpoint's review. I have no idea how that ...

It's a pretty solid piece of entertainment. It's no Infernal Affairs, but I like the way Scorsese made the material feel like it was his. And go Marky Mark! He's easily the best and most likeable I've ever seen him. The people in the audience kept gasping at the violence and commenting on it. I gues...

Well, I was lonely in the movie forum, since it's all but abandoned. But thanks. I plan on contributing more regularly from now on.

I have a cover of INXS's Never Tear Us Apart up on my nearly unused myspace artist page. I kinda like it, which I don't always say about my songs.

Crank makes Running Scared look sedate. The directors summon forth every single camera and editing trick ever amassed and throw it at you nonstop. Plus, it's pretty racist, sexist, homophobic, and you don't like the main character very much. That said, it gets a B for sheer lunacy. You've probably n...

The Illusionist

I really liked this. The cinematography and Philip Glass's score are beautiful, and even Jessica Biel turns in a good performance. I turned off the "try to figure stuff out ahead of time" side of my brain, and I'm glad I did. There was a trailer for The Prestige in front, and that looks am...

I guess I'll be the dissenting voice on this one too. It was boring and I kind of hated it. How do you spend $135 million on a movie shot on video? Why use the "Miami Vice" brand name if you're going to consciously sever all ties to the show except location and character names? Why can't M...

It was pretty scary, I guess, but mostly really really Freudian. Neil Marshall has an impaling thing, it would seem. It tries to be Alien meets Pitch Black, and succeeds surprisingly well at that. It draws a few times too often on the scary jump-cut, though, to rate much higher than a B.

I'm going to have to disagree with my friend and colleague JB, and Philadelphia's delightful Bjam on this matter. TN is mostly pretty unfunny, with a few sorta funny bits. It feels really unsure of itself, comedy-wise, much like the execrable Kicking and Screaming, but considerably less of an unholy...

I haven't read the book, so for all I know it's faithful to the spirit and tone and blah blah blah. But man, it's boring. Whoever cut the trailer did a good job of making it seem like it has an actual story, when it's really just a bunch of junked-up dudes pondering things. People think their conver...

I'm glad Woody and Scarlett had such a good time in London making Match Point, but she couldn't be more miscast in this. Like her or not, she she's not an airhead, and can't even begin to approach playing one. Actors in Woody Allen movies tend to do bad imitations of him, and she joins previous main...

Brick

I am now somewhat obssessed with Brick. I saw it yesterday and can't stop thinking and reading about it. If you don't know what it is, Brick is a film noir set in present-day high school, but with all the rapid-fire thirties/forties slang left intact. The writer/director is first-timer Rian Johnson,...

Monster House

...is oh so cool. See it in 3-D if you can. I've never seen an animated movie so realistically capture the rhythms and movements of kids. They let these kids be weird and real, and let them get into real, scary danger. It feels like an 80's movie, before they erased the guns and put in walkie-talkie...
