Fer what it's worth, I saw a documentary called "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" on Logo (the cable lezgay channel) a while back which comes off like Jim Baaker was the villain, T.F. is actually a fairly cool person (for a TV evangelist). Of course, T.F. is also the executive producer of this particular documentary, so, y'know, it was probably bound & determined to come out that way.
The weirdest thing, for me, watching the documentary: I didn't really know anything about T.F. prior to seeing this thing, but... about four years ago, we got a new minister at our church, and she and I just never got along - after she had been there about six months, I resigned as the worship band leader, I just couldn't deal with her and I felt like she had come in with her own agenda and wasn't willing to listen to anybody else's ideas. Anyway, I'm watching this biopic on T.F. and I'm freaking out, going, "this is who Jackie was trying to be..." I mean, she had the big white hair, the hand puppets, everything.

I think you all misunderstand, I'm celebrating his life and not his death. And by that I mean I am celebrating that his life is over. In addition, I've always had a soft spot for Tammy Faye ever since she was on the Surreal Life. I say that with no sarcasm, somehow that show exposes the very human side of all manner of D-list celebrities.

He founded something called The Moral Majority. These folks claimed they were moral, righteous and in the majority, and are responsible for making the extreme religious right a powerful political entity backing first Ronald Regan. This led to much the same arrogance and cockiness that our dear current President has, for instance proclaiming he was voted in with a "mandate of change" (settle down Marcus!) when he actually lost the popular vote.Denyer wrote:what did he do that was so bad?
The Moral Majority took the bible literally (when convenient), and were quick to judge anything out of their cute model of society. AIDS being the issue of the day, Falwell claimed it was retribution for the sinful lives we lead and the people who got it deserve it. Meanwhile, under Regan's watch AIDS became a raging fire with absolutely no attention afforded it from the US. Falwell also was happy to say that 9/11 had its roots in the evil social issues of our existence and not the political realities of US/Western policy towards the little people.
Many say he founded his little university to build an influential base to infiltrate the US government with right wing religious fanatics. The school aims "to develop Christ-centered men and women with the values, knowledge and skills essential to impact tomorrow's world."
I wore a button through much of the early nineties that read "The Moral Majority is Neither". It was a big deal. He was their leader.

One of his more famous comments was following the events of 9/11.
And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, "You helped this happen."
quoted from John F Harris, "God Gave US 'What We Deserve,' Falwell Says," The Washington Post (September 14, 2001)

In other news: Yolanda King just passed away. I must confess I know little about her work, and even less about her as a person. But she was famous enough to grace the front page of cnn.com, which is good enough for the following:
Some of my superstitious friends claim that these things happen in threes, and now they're trying to guess who's next. It's the sort of thing that makes me feel myself getting stupider for having heard it. But it's a surprisingly common observation. I guess it's just the way we naturally like to group things; sort of like the way we tend to see faces in stuff like burritos and water stains.

That reminds me - one day - I really want to go here.
I like to collect souvenir neoprene beer can holders. I'm sure I could get a beauty there.
If not - I would settle for the St Paul Board Game:
Journey back to the beginning of Christianity. The time was A.D. 60. The game begins immediately after Paul completed his famous four journeys. This historical strategy game simulates the difficulties and challenges confronted by the apostles. Shipwrecks, angry mobs, and Roman soldiers await you! For 1-6 players, ages 10 and up.

Yolanda King doesn't belong in this discussion. She was born of fabulous parents and lived a good life.jimtyrrell wrote:In other news: Yolanda King just passed away. Let's review where Jerry came from (from Forbes magazine):
"Jerry Sr.'s father, Carey Hezekiah Falwell, ran a string of gas stations during Prohibition, using his fuel trucks to smuggle bootleg whiskey. After Carey shot his younger brother to death in self-defense, he became an alcoholic with a nasty knack for keeping his staff in line. An employee called in sick one day, so Falwell caught the man's cat, killed and cooked it, then delivered the remains to the employee's home as a complimentary lunch. And once, after a drunken patron turned belligerent at a Falwell-owned restaurant, Carey grabbed the customer and threw him into a bear cage, where he was maimed by the beast, then set free."
This article is linked to from Jerry's Liberty University website, BTW.

AND THIS IS WHY (as a Christian) I don't visit church on a regular basis. The Moral Majority is a new level of what most (read NOT ALL) churches have within themselves. There is a whole 'I'm a better christian than you' competition within the reglious right. (note the pun) You'd think that'd kind of competition would produce a good people. I'm here to tell you that in my experience, it does NOT. It just makes a bunch of people think (and act like) they are a better PERSON than everyone one else.roymond wrote:He founded something called The Moral Majority. I feel the exact same way. I consider myself a Christian, and I'm embarrassed by most of the Christians I see on TV. I am embarrassed by the majority of Church Goers who practice their faith once or twice a week by going to Church and singing their songs and reciting their passages and then the other 5-6 days a week they drink and do drugs and cheat on their wives and abuse their children. It makes me sick. I believe in practicing your faith in private and being a good person EVERY day not just on Sunday.Hoblit wrote: AND THIS IS WHY (as a Christian) I don't visit church on a regular basis. I'm surprised this thread hasn't turned into a flame war, anything that has anything to do with religeon usually does. I think the less said the better.
From spoken word to actual singing, I can screw up any style with style.

You seem to be saying that drinking and doing drugs equates to not being a good person. Is that what you intended to say? If so, why do you think that?Rone Rivendale wrote:I am embarrassed by the majority of Church Goers who practice their faith once or twice a week by going to Church and singing their songs and reciting their passages and then the other 5-6 days a week they drink and do drugs and cheat on their wives and abuse their children.
