Re: Watching the Review Thread Riot (Watching the Riot Revie
Haven't voted or really made up my mind on how I'm going to vote this time around, but here are my initial thoughts. Astrolamb The vocals sound strong and clear to me, didn't notice any pitch problems, which plague just about everything I sing. The character of your voice fits the song nicely. The g...

Re: 5/7/15 Guns N' Roses
After high school I spent a lot of time at an arcade that had a pool table and a lot of kids trying to hustle each other. This was on the jukebox, and it got played a lot, I seem to remember it was a 'B' side. This one guy would put this on the juke and strut around after a profitable victory. The w...

I'm going to have to change my favorite. I just now realized it's The Waiting. The waiting is indeed the hardest part. Waiting, waiting waiting.

Re: 5/13/15 The Velvet Underground
I mean beyond the obviously great songs like Heroin and I'm Waiting for the Man , I've always found myself drawn to the softer sounding songs. The first Velvet Underground song I really connected with was Stephanie Says for how pretty and poignant it is. I also really love the songs with Nico, like ...

For me it's Under the Bridge, because I'm a sucker for songs about drug addiction and loving your city.

Re: Rendered speechless (Watching the Riots prefight)
I submitted something on my own this week, working in collaboration with a good friend from college, the enigmatic Dr. Zoom. I also worked with Jerkatorium on a song as per usual. Having said that, I'm sure you'll understand my ambivalence about this fight, and my indifference as to the timing of th...

The performance of Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock. The band tripping balls, great fucking sound, and the drum solo. DRUM SOLO.

Re: Don't opt out (of doing Unsubscribe reviews!)
Astrolamb A nice country sound you created. There was some odd popping in my right ear at around the two minute mark with music coming in and out, which was somewhat distracting. The bit about Nigeria was funny, and I like your soft subtle backup vocals, also cool spooky ending. Edit: that popping ...

Good call Generic, Eminence Front is so good. Makes me realize that it's really Pete that I love most about them. Too bad Roger didn't like Rough Boys, it would have made one hell of a Who song.

Re: 5/6/15 Jethro Tull
Aqualung was the first album I ever heard from Jethro Tull, and one of the things that tickled me most about it was the two short songs Wond'ring Aloud and Slipstream, which are both on opposite sides of each other on the vinyl. I think Wond'ring Aloud is probably my favorite.

Re: 5/8/15 The Who
There are really too many great songs to pick a favorite. I listened to a lot of Classic Rock Radio growing up, and I remember very clearly when I realized what Pictures of Lily was about, and I thought it was so amazingly cool.

Beat the Champ
I'm usually the last one to find out about new good music, but I stumbled upon the new album Beat the Champ by The Mountain Goats, and a few tracks off it are insanely great. I never knew professional wrestling could be so interesting.

Re: Rendered speechless (Watching the Riots prefight)
Dig the classic rock sound on You Don't Care. The song I most associate with riots is that Sublime song that has the line:
it's about coming up and staying on top
screaming 187 at a motherfuckin' cop

Oh shared hosting, right. You're right I have no clue, I just assumed you guys had access to the DB the phpbb forums ran on. I've had to dick with the phpbb DB in the past. Oh yeah Portland, yeah! Re: Song play stats suggestion
The HTTP access logs are easy to get at via cron job or whatever. The idea is that you paste something a lot like my code above into /etc/logrotate.d/apache2 in the section that rotates /var/log/apache2/*.log or whatever. That way stats get generated whenever the access logs get rotated, which may ...

Re: Song play stats suggestion
I've asked for this before too. It ought to be very easy to parse the web logs with a web log analyzer to get some baseline but inaccurate numbers. I think even a web log analyzer like AWStats would be overkill. I imagine the access logs get rotated by logrotate on a regular basis. prerotate echo '...

One thing I found myself really curious about as I looked at the votes for Deep Sub-Reddit was how many times each song was listened to, both in aggregate and by unique IP address. This interesting info could be easily extracted out of the songfight.org web logs, and I'm pretty sure self that other ...

So the votes are in. Thanks everyone who reviewed and voted for us, and congrats to Lunkhead for writing a great song and winnning! I've been listening to all the songs throughout the week and I thought I'd share my top 3 picks. #1 Sunday Guts: I kept coming back to this song this week. I heard a lo...

The Peel Session version of 'Handsome Devil' rocks so hard. Too many great songs to choose a favorite, but this one I remember well.
