Re: Best Albums of 2020 - a fun game!

I think I only made it to 5 on the Amoeba list, but some of those were on my "I should listen to this" list (or my "I didn't know that artist put out a new album!" list) so I'm going to work through that soon. I'm listening to Yumi Zouma right now, which I hadn't heard of but sounded up my alley, en...

Re: Whistling

Steamboat willie whistle: Louder and more distinct, but with a much smaller range. Relax the back half of your tongue, and tense the next quarter to form a U that bridges your front 2 molars. The tip of your tongue shouldn't be touching anything at this point - aim it upwards. Open your lips as if ...

Whistling

How the hell do I do it? Someone teach me. The air goes through a narrow passage and vibrates, right? Which part of your mouth is the part making the tension? Should it be your lips? How hard do you blow? Where’s your tongue supposed to be? I can kinda whistle with my front teeth I guess but it’s ai...

Re: What was that? (Disembodied Voice reviews)

Other thoughts re vox: it might also be helpful, if you have pitch correction software, to sing something and then look at the results in Melodyne or ReaTune or whatever, see how far off you are and in which direction, and then listen to your uncorrected vocal and then your corrected one to hear the...

If we have a vocal techniques thread, I hope we can also have a learn to whistle thread bc I want to learn how and my whistling sucks

Giving Tuesday

“Giving Tuesday” is a pretty new thing I think, and is supposed to be a counterpoint to Black Friday/Cyber Monday consumerism. My friend Meena (a super talented tabla player who played on the Bangles’ last album!) helped establish the Elijah McClain Scholarship Fund as part of the Harmony Project, w...

An official welcome to you, Nick! I always feel funny being all “welcome, we’re friendly” after having already criticized people’s songs but so it goes. Hope you’re having fun and I look forward to hearing what you come up with next.

Re: My Life

We didn’t see any trick or treaters this year and it was kind of sad although I’m glad they were playing it safe. Even pre-Covid, around here at least it seemed like there’s been a trend where kids would trick or treat at the mall or downtown businesses or whatnot during the day, not in neighborhood...

Re: Cooking

Over the weekend, I went to this fantastic new Middle Eastern grocery store that opened up nearby, and got a bunch of treats. My favorite was this Russian pine cone jam (!) that tastes very piney—and the pine cones are soft and edible! It’s a bit of an acquired taste, but I think it would probably b...

I’m also grateful for this community and all the people in it, and especially everyone who puts in so much hard work keeping it running. I’m stir crazy, anxious, isolated, and depressed all the time but it helps my mental health immensely to feel connected to other people making music all around the...

I think tweaking the mastering settings and re-exporting fixed my mp3, so here it is again.

Re: Awesome Music (related) Videos

I loved “Shameika” from Fiona Apple’s latest album, but I hadn’t seen the video. I was moved by this story and the response song “Shameika Said” from Shameika Stepney herself, and as a bonus finally watched the Fiona Apple video, which I thought was beautifully done. Watch/listen to both, and read t...

Re: Gift of Music 2020/2021

Heads up to crumpart and j$ that the videos for Lisa Hannibal, orla gartland, and j$’s first song are blocked in the US (at least for me). I can try to find crumpart’s songs by name but I’d suggest to j$ and everyone else to put the artist and title in the text of your post as well.
