song fight! submission
email specifications:
subject:
A Grand Parade
message:
Your Band Name
attachment:
yourbandname_agp.mp3
This is formed from your band name (not including "the"), all lower case, with no spaces, an underscore, and an acronym of the title (or in the case of one word titles, the title), followed, of course, by a period and the file extension "mp3". MP3's only! We do not post .m4a or other file types. More info in the faq.
You wouldn't think we would need to say this, but use the actual title as shown and your actual band name, kapeesh?

Re: A parade, or a marathon?! (A Grand Parade reviews)
I'm going to do my reviews in batches over the next several days, so I'd might as well get my obligatory navel-gazing self-reviews/explanations out of the way. I dug up three classic personas to submit as, because why not.
entropic pincushion: This is the persona I used to use for more abstract/algorithmic stuff. In this case, I wrote some software to take the middlemost bit of every single one of the prior winners (all the way up to Love Magic), find the zero crossings, and assemble it together into a collage showing (badly) the evolution of Song Fight! over the years. For somewhat better clarity I also made a ten-minute version:
and I also have a 50-minute-long version which is frankly not a lot better to listen to so I'll spare y'all that one.
Pringle Can: This persona was from a time when I was going on a rant (on the old Dumbrella forum) and JB said something like, "fluffy, you have all the grace and charisma of a soggy can of Pringles." So those were from when I was feeling flippant and/or meta, usually when sulking about some bullshit. Anyway for this one I decided to do something like Tom Waits meets Bo Burnham while just getting painfully meta about Song Fight! itself, especially in its earlier days. We've all come a long way and I'm proud of this lovely little community, still going on after all these years.
<3: Sorry to ruin the illusion, but this is me. This persona came to be when I was working through some pretty heavy gender dysphoria and I was experimenting with pitch and formant processing to try to sound more feminine. It was pretty frustrating when people figured out it was me and accused me of catfishing or trolling them, and not just trying to live vicariously through technology. But oh well. I've since incorporated aspects of the <3 persona and style into much of my music and my overall production techniques, and also there's a little thing where she's basically hiding in plain sight on my band photo.
Anyway I just wanted to post some of this stuff before it got buried under what I hope is 6000+ reviews of each others' songs.
Pace yourselves! We have a lot of music to get through (just under four hours' worth at the moment!), but it all absolutely deserves to get reviewed as much as possible. What I've heard so far is just plain incredible.

Yeah I tried but couldn't finish and didn't want to submit crap. Looking forward to listening though. And nice to see some old faces and people I know and remember from 20+ years ago. 1000 fights is an amazing feat. I hope there's a stream all button!

The "stream all" button is there. We now have a "download all" button too. Now that I am thinking about that though I hope people clicking "download all" and having to have so many files zipped up doesn't hose the site ...

Re: A parade, or a marathon?! (A Grand Parade reviews)
I'm going to do reviews in stages because I'm a human and this shit is nuts.
This first blurb is just overall impressions after the listening party.
Initially my favorite song was by Tiny Robots. God those harmonies.
The BSS song seems to have edged ahead over time owing to the just pure anthemic truth and beauty to it, given the moment.
It might be the best BSS song in my eyes but I need to sit with that.
I'm now listening to the full stream, and Sober's song is destroying me. Yeah I think Sober gets a vote.
That song is a monument.
More thoughts and reviews once things are posted and I get to hear everything...

You can also listen to them all in submission order via the listening party stream recording, at least for the entries which got in before that wrapped up.

Heine's song ends abruptly. (I think the song starts around 26:00.) Is it just my system?fluffy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 10:02 pmYou can also listen to them all in submission order via the listening party stream recording, at least for the entries which got in before that wrapped up.

I have no idea about that, you’d have to ask Tom (boffoyuxdudes) as he ran the stream.AJOwens wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2024 4:25 amHeine's song ends abruptly. (I think the song starts around 26:00.) Re: A parade, or a marathon?! (A Grand Parade reviews)
It appears Heine's export of his song is only 1:22 but it sure sounds like it should be longer than that. I will email him.
Just an FYI it's on all of you to do quality assurance on your entries before you submit them.

Re: A parade, or a marathon?! (A Grand Parade reviews)
Also worth noting that on the stream, both entropic pincushion and pringle can were turned way down for some reason, and the <3 entry was the original submission, not the updated version that was submitted just a couple hours later. And I'm sure those aren't the only irregularities.
It's probably best to wait until the fight is actually posted and listen to the final versions from the website in order to judge things properly. I plan on making a playlist so that I can track my progress.

Re: A parade, or a marathon?! (A Grand Parade reviews)
Re: volume levels, we don't do any volume/loudness processing on the submitted songs, so if there were volume/loudness issues in the stream that may have been a stream issue for Tommy to speak to. Re: the <3 entry I think Tommy was grabbing the files as I was uploading them. For updated mixes I completely forgot to let him know about those, so, unless the update came in and I uploaded it before he grabbed any version then he would not have had the updated mixes. That would apply to <3 and a few other folks who sent updates.

Re: A parade, or a marathon?! (A Grand Parade reviews)
On the chat replay Tom specifically referred to turning entropic pincushion down, when people asked why it was so quiet. Pringle Can was also much quieter than I'd submitted it even though I'd mastered it to the same LUFS as <3, so I'm assuming it was also turned down.
But in any case my point is just that the streamed versions of the songs aren't the ground truth that should be used for reviewing and voting, especially with all the other technical glitches and youtube's recompression and so on.

Is this from the Home Page? because I'm still seeing Almost No Regrets... Assuming all 80+ songs will show on the home page just like usual, right?
ETA: when I click on "Stream All" it still goes to http://songfight.org/music/almost_no_re ... aylist.m3u

What Lunkhead means is that when the fight is posted there will be a 'stream all' which works.
