Re: Nur Ein XV Round Two "Chupacabra"

Mandibles are in! Our two instruments are hammered dulcimer and guitar. I was going to distort some vocals this week, but they song didn't want it, so we went without it. Our song is inspired by Magic! the Gathering, specifically the ravenous Chupacabra card, which is basically an instakill. I'm re...

Re: Modern democracy (was: COVID-19 freakout thread)

Our leaders are chosen by the party. We don't vote for the leader at all, we vote for our local representative (I'm speaking for both Australia and Ireland here). Making decisions like who the leader is is something we pay and trust the politicians to do.

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Two "Chupacabra"

In with another shadow. I started out wanting to do something about pronunciation, which led me to Irish names, and then I got thinking about Irish language repression and Oliver Cromwell, who is like the Chupacabra of Ireland, except the goats were people (and all of the wolves). So I made a song a...

And the red on those logos is #902c32. The facebook one is actually a little different again at #902c31.

On the current front page songfight! logo, there's a border of #a10000, a highlight border of #a93136 and the main red is #a8282e. Edit: the two bordering colours vary letter to letter, but the main red stays the same.

Re: Modern democracy (was: COVID-19 freakout thread)

I, too, have this question.

Australians can officially join a political party if we want to, but it’s by no means necessary and the large majority of people don’t.

Re: Have you tried (Shutdown prefight)

I have not made a song yet. Actually got some paid freelance work to do. Gosh. If there's still time tomorrow I'll give it a go. I have made some cover art also though, so at least there's that. Learned a few things I didn't know about Photoshop already in the process. Hooray!

@crumpart Looking forward to hearing that chromatic harmonica on some new songs!
I played the Sesame Street theme song today. It was highly satisfying.

Re: Gear Acquisition Syndrome

I needed to buy a new violin bow and new strings (which I had birthday gift vouchers for), but also caved and bought a chromatic harmonica with my own cash money. I spent most of my teenage years in my bedroom with a harmonica and a harmonica book after one time when I saw a boy I had a crush on pla...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round One "The Handbook"

Regarding this note, try making the S sound a little differently. Most people make the sound with the tip of their tongue behind the top front teeth. Try putting the tip behind your bottom front teeth so that the S sound is made by the air passing between your too teeth and the flat of your tongue ...

Re: Modern democracy (was: COVID-19 freakout thread)

I know Australia had an amazing gun buyback thing - to get that to work here, you'd need 1) everyone to agree to trust the government (lol), 2) serious border security , 3) significant increase and cooperation in enforcement at all levels of government. Any territory that cannot eliminate guns comp...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round One "The Handbook"

A pretty standard way to do doubled lead vocals is to have one of them centered and full volume, then to pan the double to one side just slightly (maybe 5-15%) and duck its level a couple db. For me not hearing a main vocal in the center is disorienting, at least on headphones. Pushing them off to ...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round One "The Handbook"

crumpart your vocals on your two Nur Ein songs have been the best I've heard from you yet I think so I'd say keep doing what you're doing! I can see the argument that the vocals were too loud this time around, they're very up-front but they worked for me. Thanks for this and also the rest of the re...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round One "The Handbook"

I don’t know if my double tracking is any good or not, but I try the wide panned thing every time and I always find it really disconcerting so end up changing it back. In my track this time, the main vocal is down the centre, my doubled track is around 10-15% in one direction with the volume much lo...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Two "Chupacabra"

The real question is though "Chupacabra" is a particularly mezo-american term. I am sure that the judges are not going mark me down if I were convert that to a southern hemispheric cryptozooic creature like a bunyip, yowie or kadagi man? I admit I had to look up what chupacabra meant. I have heard ...
