Re: Nur Ein XV Round Five "North Beach Vampires"

Well, I saw that one coming. I've been clinging on to the bottom of the pile for a while and I knew there was a reason I was reluctant to press the send button. A massive thank you to all the judges and people who took the time to listen to my stuff and provide me with some really great constructiv...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Five "North Beach Vampires"

Abandoning the scoring system this week, and going with brief descriptions. Admittedly, I'm worn out and ready for this to be over. Moss Palace - This goes on the Best Of compilation. If and when Songfight Live becomes a thing again - This is song I would want to hear. Call and response between the ...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Four "Carte Blanche"

And how is being "dumbfounded" not an insult to the judges? It implies that the results are so unexpected that no one could have possibly seen it coming, which implies that the judges are either not doing their jobs correctly, or we are just throwing random numbers out there. Every single judge is a...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Four "Carte Blanche"

Micah, Micah, Micah I have like 20 hours yet to edit out Ben's "auxiliary words and body sounds", so I'm just going to say- I am totally impressed with how much you've ramped up your game, and I was betting on you making it to the final round. For the 10th week in a row, I am dumbfounded by the ran...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Four "Carte Blanche"

Cheers for the response, Glenn. If you're ranking the songs based on how much you enjoyed them there's absolutely nothing I can do to argue against that, and there's certainly nothing wrong with it. I dont think that need be a secret though, and I dont see the need to hide your reasons behind a sco...

Edit: also, yes please. I would like my concept to be bumped up! And lyrics if that's okay, but just concept would be great. Thank you!
Done!

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Four "Carte Blanche"

Thanks for the prompt reviews, Glenn. Feedback is appreciated as always. I feel that as we are approaching the business end of Nur Ein there are a couple of points about your scoring system that I want to query in a vain attempt to squeeze a couple of more points out of you (or fewer points for the...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Four "Carte Blanche"

Moss Palace - The vibe is absolutely perfect. The melody goes to nice, unexpected places. The vocal melody at :41 is pure bliss. This is a fantastic composition, and an excellent performance that nails the challenge in a big way. I do wish you would have belted out that last note with a bit more "o...

Re: Glenn Case - That Sound, That Vibe

Thank you for all of the kind words, Ken! The rest of the album has a similar sound. Hope you'll like it. Yes, I should have mentioned that I was writing about the first track, which is already available, titled Repeat. Funny part is "Repeat" was on the chopping block when I was narrowing down the s...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Three "Rear Window"

This is something I have always struggled with. You are quite correct in thinking that I use headphone to mix predominantly. This is out of necessity as I don't want to disturb family members, either asleep or just in the same room watching tablet and giving me grief when I turn the speakers on[......

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Three "Rear Window"

Okay! Here we go! Glow Worm - You're on point as always. The guest vocalist is phenomenal. My main complaint is that keyboard patch in the break sections - I don't care for the timbre. The mix is good overall. Things do sound a bit distorted (especially the vocals) but it does sound like an intentio...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Two "Chupacabra"

If the SM7B is within your budget, it's a solid choice used on many multi-platinum albums for decades, and you should have a real hard time being too loud for that mic. (Most folks have the opposite problem with it.) Glenn Case uses one too and possibly other folks on here. That microphone is argua...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Three "Rear Window"

You've officially driven me crazy. That is what I live to do! Glad I could oblige! Full disclosure - Miscalculation on my part. No spreadsheets in this instance. I went to the Nur Ein website, and failed to count the round zero entries, and there was no round zero for the first Nur Ein. @Glenns May...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Two "Chupacabra"

Lucky Spoon - Fantastic! This is incredibly fun! Lyrics are exceptional. The story had me glued to hear what happened next even before realizing the entire thing is referencing the Mandalorian! The whole thing feels a bit loose, but that works perfectly for what you're doing. LYRICS: [GOOD] 2 point...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Three "Rear Window"

Other examples for this challenge would be the entire "Your Light No Longer Shines" fight om Round One of Nur Ein IX Oh dear! The 102nd Nur Ein challenge is pretty close to the challenge from the 58th song! Well, that's it folks. Competition over. We're just repeating ourselves now. No sense in let...

Oh dear. Another crap title/ challenge combo. Looks like last weeks good one was an anomaly.
Look at the bright side: You might be eliminated this round anyway, and then you won't need to write a song!

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Two "Chupacabra"

This is a cool challenge because it has me creating something quite unlike my usual tracks. This makes me happy to read! Can't speak for all the judges, but this is precisely the kind of outcome I was hoping for. Something that takes you a little outside your comfort zone, and forces you to conside...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round One "The Handbook"

Micah Sommersmith ... Your vocals sound super crispy in the mix when you're hitting S sounds, and not in a good way. Thanks for the review! I struggled a lot trying to tame the S sounds in my vocals on this entry - sometimes it's an issue when I'm recording, sometimes it's not, so I'm not sure how ...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Two "Chupacabra"

Where did we land with percussive mouth sounds? I’m taking this challenge to mean as many vocal tracks as you like, but only two instrumental tracks. I figure body percussion is its own instrument, but What about percussive vocal takes? If any clarification is forthcoming, this would be useful to m...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round One "The Handbook"

I am genuinely impressed. Nearly everyone had better sounding vocals this week across the board. I listened to all of these songs in the background as I worked at the day job on Monday, and then I sat down after work to give more thorough listens. Full disclosure - The bottom of the pack wasn't near...
