The Weepies
The Weepies. Massachusetts-based folk/pop duo. Boy/girl/guitar. She's like a less cynical Shawn Colvin and he's like a less wooden Captain to her Tennille. They write songs by the book and nail it each time. I'm running through their 2010 "By My Thrill" album right now. It gets a bit tires...

Re: Mostess writes a song
We woke up early and had a final listen and hated the sound of it. We have learned over time to always sleep on it and hold off on the submitting until the last minute. Regret sucks. So we opened it back up in Logic and jiggered the lead vocals effects settings to make the delay less intrusive and t...

Re: Mostess writes a song
My goodness the deadline is tomorrow morning? Alright. The kids are in bed, the wife is watching TV, I can sneak upstairs and record some vocals. One track: it took two takes. I wrote the lyrics quickly. They are nothing special but the capture the mood I was going for. It's actually a lot spookier ...

Re: Mostess writes a song
Yes our library is true awesomeness. Not just synth equipment and effects pedals, you can borrow metal detectors and lawn games and solar conversion kits and thermal leak detectors. Pretty great. We are doing no recording today but we've listened to the mix a few times on different speakers to come ...

Re: Mostess writes a song
Ah Saturday. You can always count on Saturday. I recorded some bass using the Korg bass sequencer box I borrowed from the library. That thing makes some funny noises but I kept it mostly normal bass tones. That was pretty cool. I added 2 acoustic guitar tracks to run through the whole song. The elec...

Re: Mostess writes a song
We have some melody! Not recorded yet, but we can sing along to the track in the car. Most of the words are mumble mumble, hunting for rhymes here and there and finding little word combinations that sound good in various places. We won't record vocals until we are ready. The middle parts, which we h...

Mostess writes a song
Just in case anyone finds this useful, we will present our writing and recording of "Stay In Your Lane" as it happens until the deadline. After reading the title, we spent a day or so humming some lines. We sat at the piano and picked out some minor key riff and settled on a general mood. ...

Annie 2014
We took the family to see the new Annie yesterday and I was amazed at how sucky the songwriting and audio work was. The dialogue was cute, the actors did a pretty great job, there were some really fun and some really touching moments. But the mix was awful. Even with good movie theater speakers the ...

Re: Jan 21, 2015
Hi Hoblit! Child #3 knocked me off the SongFight! wagon. April 2008 that was. I've managed to get a couple songs written and submitted since then but it takes some effort. Luckily, kids tend to grow up and become more independent and give their parents some extra free time. I see more SongFighting i...

Fixing a guitar
Preface: I'm an incorrigible cheapskate, am in no way mechanical, and have never done anything this brave to an instrument before. But I finally fixed my electric guitar and I wish I'd done it 20 years ago. I've had a Peavey Falcon since 1986. It's basically a Strat clone for wankers: locking mechan...

If you ever play a game and can't, by game-rules alone, agree on the relative awesomeness of two Rockening bands one (or both) of which contain Hostess Mostess, we will happily participate in a Rockening SongFight to help resolve the matter for realsies. PM us here.

Unless you refrigerate it, that is. Leave a slice of cheddar out on the counter and it will get all oil-sweaty and slippery and soft.

Re: What's my next Mac-based recording software
If your laptop is so old and frail, why even upgrade to Mavericks? (BTW do not upgrade to Yosemite - I've had horrific performance issues on my 2011 Mac mini, which Mavericks ran great on. It runs great on my 2013 MacBook Pro though.) Old and frail is how we roll here in Middle-Aged, Middle-Western...

Re: What's my next Mac-based recording software
Well looky here!
1) Rename "Logic Express 9.0.0" as "Logic Express" in the Applications folder
2) Download the updater
3) Unzip and run it
4) Bring the world to tears by channeling astral-plane love with your musical genius
We have accomplished 1-3. So far.

Re: What's my next Mac-based recording software
I did zero research before posting this. You are welcome. :) I like recording in Logic. I have (had) Logic Express 9.0.0 which was running under Snow Leopard. When I "up"-graded to Maverick it warned me about some other apps that wouldn't work but it didn't mention Logic. Probably because ...

What's my next Mac-based recording software
Well how about that for a surprise when Maverick tells me (after the upgrade) that Logic 9.0.0 will no longer work! What's next for Hostess Mostess? Something free? Or at least cheap? And not loop-based (we don't do the FruityLoops or the Abelton stuff...or should we?!) And quick? It can be complica...

Mostess does Lehrer in Ann Arbor this October
If you are in the greater Detroit area in October, schlep out to Ann Arbor to see Mostess in "Tom Foolery" on a Thursday evening. It's a 4-person musical revue of the work of Tom Lehrer, arguably the greatest American social/political satirist of the 20th century. It's racy, it's spicy, it...

Hi I'm Mostess and I haven't been here in a long time but SF and I go way back. I'm grumpy and I've had some wine so take your lumps like a man and don't complain that you intended for your song to be boring or ugly or dumb because I don't really give a crap. You are a good person and you wrote a fi...
