What to do with SongFight.NET

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

Tried to install Planet. Looks like I should be able to, but Python keeps giving me a "syntax" error at the very beginning of the config file. I'll be damned if I have the patience to fuck with this sort of thing for very long any more, so we'll see if I get up the moxy to work on it any more than the hour I've already sunk into downloading, unpacking, reading, and trying. *fart*

Hey, I tried using that wiki but I couldn't figure out how to register so I could edit stuff, so I gave up.
You don't have to register to edit stuff. If you're not logged in, it just logs your IP so we can keep track of things you change in case you're a troll.

The fact that people don't contribute to the Wiki is THE MAIN REASON I am absolutely POSITIVE that people won't contribute to a blog or magazine. There are other reasons, born of other experience, but that one is like, "oh so that's how people are". Then you shrug and walk away.

I didn't even know about the wiki. I must have missed the announcement.

Not that I'd be an active contributor on it, though.

Maybe a link to the wiki on the songfight.org page would direct more people to it? Right now, unless you were around when it was announced, you wouldn't even necessarily know that it exists. And if you did, or if you randomly wondered it there were a SongFight! wiki, you'd have to then search for mention of it on the boards or Google it in order to find it. Or is there already a link that I'm overlooking somewhere?

Also, since you're already using PHP quite a bit, maybe hosting a MediaWiki instance would make the whole thing seem more official and get people more involved, but maybe not.

As a major contributor to the wiki, I was a great idea. It made for a neat little resource BUT in the end, it was a wiki and it ended up being ugly and flawed. There's nothing like the feeling of writing a long piece on someone, only to have that person edit it down to "I play music". Plus, we have the archive and if people would just edit their archive pages, it would serve much of the same purpose while doing it better.

Knowing about its existence made it possible to <a href="http://songfight.net/wiki/index.php?tit ... ">randomly find</a>. And of course it's MediaWiki, since Dreamhost makes it dead-simple to install.

niveous: There's a real songfight.net-hosted wiki, not the PBWiki that you're probably thinking of. Actually I think that may have been a major source of confusion - even if they did see JB's announcement of its existence they were probably all "uh, what's new about that? isn't there already that thing on pbwiki?"

For the wiki, I think it would be cool to incorporate the extensive advice that I was given in this thread. If we could get it into a wiki-friendly format, I think it would be really useful to anyone new to recording.

Great idea! Why not start adding it yourself? That's what it's for! :)

I might try that. I've never edited a wiki before though - we'll see how it goes. I might do a mock version of what happened in that thread with a new song, and permanent links.

I had forgotten about the existing SongFight! MediaWiki instance. I only remembered the pbwiki one. And when I Google 'songfight wiki' I don't even see the songfight.net wiki on the first page of results (or even on the next few pages). The pbwiki is the first result. The search does return the SongFight wiki thread, but it's 8 pages long, and the first post is about the one on pbwiki, not the songfight.net one. I think you should change the title from "SF Wiki" to "SongFight Wiki" to try to get it to be the first search result for those words.

EDIT: And a link to it on the songfight.org page wouldn't hurt.

Another thing to do with SongFight.net: Have it go down for 16 hours unexpectedly.

That was pretty weird - anybody know why it went down? It was a learning experience though - I never realized how many times a day I go to Songfight until now.

So is that wiki pretty much just supposed to be for recording advice?

I think so. I don't really understand how to use it, so I'm basically waiting until people make some pages first. Then I'll add in my two cents.

How to use a wiki:

If you want to edit a page:
1. Click the link to edit the page
2. Edit the source code for the page
3. Save your changes

If you want to make a new page:
1. Edit an existing page
2. Add a link to the page you want to create to the existing page's source code
2. Save your changes
3. Click the link you just added
4. Enter the code for the new page
5. Save your changes

That's just in case some folks have absolutely zero experience with wikis.

As for the official SongFight! wiki, I don't think it's meant to be exclusively about recording info. Just a couple hours ago JB said:
So you should all really start filling the Wiki with useful recording, songwriting, and SongFight history/personality/organizational information.

Cool, thanks. I think I'll add some stuff - I can't be of much help in teh technical end - but I can write about me :-)

Edit: that was kind of a waste of my 800th post.
