there's always Hawaii Five-O, and how they won. Or something.
It's likely there are some historical events in various calendars' 501s.
Staying up until / something happening at 5:01 AM?
I might try my wretched little hand at this one. Seems like a lot of possibilities. Not feelin' the jeans angle, tho.

You're never able to see how anyone could argue something that is different from the point you choose to defend. 501 is as grounded in reality as 187, 404, 411, 420, 666, 808, or 911. Some numbers already have specific, widely understood meanings attached to them, just like words.Lord of Oats wrote:And I don't see how you could argue that a number isn't abstract. A standalone number is grounded in reality?
A song with the title "And Counting" does not have to be about, or even mention, numbers. A song with the title "501" does not have to be about, or even mention numbers.Lord of Oats wrote:Yet two weeks in a row, I have to write about numbers.
people: stop whining!
either write something or don't.
the limits are all in your mind.
haven't you ever heard a song that does not use the title in it?
you can write anything you want.
all this talk of constraints just illustrates lack of imagination.
next fight title: "1 after 501"
this may inspire some good beatles homages, or give andrew a heart attack. either way.

How are words any different? The task is just too hard for some, I guess.Lord of Oats wrote:What's a number? It has many uses, but it's nothing unless it's referring to something.

If you're talking to me, yes, there actually is. It's me. I haven't actually bought the gun yet, but it seems useless, since I don't count on missing any titles.Märk wrote:There's obviously someone holding a gun to your head, forcing you to write and submit a song. I mean, why else would you complain about the titles?
I think it's funny, and a much better title than the last one. So please don't operate on me.fluffy wrote:There were 500 titles which were (basically) just random word choices, and something of a fanfare for #500. The 501st one is simply "501." Yeah, fair enough. I may have jumped the gun. But rarely can I resist the urge to stir up trouble.Spud wrote:I could see it getting a little old if the next one is "502"...
I have little to no capability for lateral thinking.erik wrote:A song with the title "And Counting" does not have to be about, or even mention, numbers. A song with the title "501" does not have to be about, or even mention numbers.
501 is something like Maki, really. It has several, disparate, obscure meanings. For many, nothing specific will readily come to mind. At least it's not as definitively attached to one thing as 911 would be, at least for the American audience. Maybe I don't have the cultural literacy that should be required for participation, but in both cases, absolutely nothing came to mind. US 501 has to be one of the least famous roads out there. As Mark said, it's a rare error message. I've never ever heard of these damned pants everyone is talking about. 501 has a lot less significance than a lot of other numbers. But any number is pretty arbitrary. Yes, just like any word. If the title were "Heart" it wouldn't really mean anything concrete, and would be very open-ended. The point is, just in my tenure here, we've had titles like "History of My Broken Heart" and "How Much Will You Give Me?" that force the songs in...ugh...a very specific general direction, if that makes any sense. If 501 already has an implied deep cultural significance, I must be living under a rock. 666 is the number of the beast, 808 is a famous drum machine by Roland, 911 is what you call in an emergency. I don't see how this could be equated to those. I guess 411 is information; I don't really know what any of the others are. Whatever. I'm an idiot. I'm going to go work on my car.erik wrote:501 is as grounded in reality as 187, 404, 411, 420, 666, 808, or 911. I don't know what this dead horse business is. I'm sorry for that comment. Spud is right. Three would be overkill. If I do anything twice in a row, yes, I am having a streak.röymond wrote:From the beating dead horses department:Like someone winning twice in a row is on a winning streak? Um...words aren't really all that different. A standalone word of relatively similar obscurity would act the same way, and it did. A couple things:röymond wrote:How are words any different? The task is just too hard for some, I guess.
a. I don't complain about titles as an excuse not to be creative, or to not do a song, or whatever. It's just a way to pass the time. And maybe communicate the struggle involved, so my entry will be more appreciated than it deserves to be.
b. I didn't complain about this title.
If by some, you mean me, you're not being nice, and I don't appreciate that.

501 as a number has a very strong correlation to the famous jeans you don't know about. 187 has a strong correlation to homicide (as in "1-8-7 on a motherfuckin cop"), and 420 has a strong correlation to smoking weed. Your ignorance of what the numbers signify doesn't mean that the numbers have no significance. There are things that lots of people know about that you do not.Lord of Oats wrote:If 501 already has an implied deep cultural significance, I must be living under a rock. 666 is the number of the beast, 808 is a famous drum machine by Roland, 911 is what you call in an emergency. If we get a bunch of songs about jeans, I'm going to lose faith in this system. A lot more stuff makes sense now, understanding the 187 thing. So thanks. And, I thought it was 4:20, not 420, that had to do with weed. I mean, this brings up the 'how far can we stretch the title' argument. I suppose it's up to the personal preference of the voters. I guess it wouldn't be too bad if somebody wrote a song called 5:01, considering that we had a song called "Vienna, 1939" in the "Baby, Be Quiet" fight. I suppose it does say "inspired by" the title, so hey, whatever. It's a party. With pants.erik wrote:501 as a number has a very strong correlation to the famous jeans you don't know about. 187 has a strong correlation to homicide (as in "1-8-7 on a motherfuckin cop"), and 420 has a strong correlation to smoking weed.

Is there anyone else who just skips any post by Lord of Oats? I mean, I try to read them, but I can't get past the first few sentences and they last for paragraphs. I mean no offense--I'm actually quite fascinated that you have this power to force me immediately to move on to the next post.
I vote that the titles stay sequential numbers until all the idiots "lose faith in th(e) system" and go away. Then you can resume the awesome titles.
