We are expecting our third baby in April! It's a girl. Five years ago this week our "Totally Digging Your Mom" entry was a ballad to my wife, pregnant with our first. Now she's 4 and wants to name the baby "Lucy".

Congrats!
Lucy is a cool classic name. My son was also 4 when his little brother was born and we were going to let him name him, but he wanted to name him hotdog. I was all for it, but my buzz kill wife shot that name down. So we ended up going with Cody. But still to this day, my older son and myself call Cody, Hotdog, which has now evolved into CodeDog.

I think Emily is a pretty name for a girl. Classic and sophisticated.

Amberlynn Dawn X (Golden Morning)

Scarlet Autumn X ( uh... Red Fall )

Misty Summer X ( another self explanatory )

Violet Eve X (works better if last name is more than one syllable)

Note: These names, while very pretty... have a huge drawback.

I think hotdog is an excellent name. This coming from a man called sausage...

So girl names I like:
Jessica, Tegan, Emily, Natasha

and just to keep with the 'theme', what about Pineapple?

I imagine I'm in the minority here, but I don't think you should pick a first name without seeing how it sounds next to the last name. I mean, the two should sound cool together, like she's destined to be a badass novelist or cure cancer or some shit.

What's your last name?

Don't choose Emily. It tops the charts every year! There were 3 Emilys in my kindergarten class.

Speaking of the charts, the U.S. Social Security Administration has a nifty widget for looking up the top baby names for a given year.

Enter a year. Check out what was hot in, oh, 1918. You'll get a good list o' old-fashioned names.

(I just did 1918 -- and got Agnes, Beatrice, Eunice, Essie, Effie, Imogene, Eugenia, Philomena, and Wilhelmina to name a few.)

I personally would choose Madrona, but you can't have it, as I'm saving it for myself on the off chance that I breed. I also like all the -olly names -- Polly, Molly, Holly, etc.

We never checked the sex of the kids until after they were born. And we were certain our first was going to be a girl. So we had a bunch of names ready either way. My favorite was Juniper. I like Gin, and I think June is a beautiful shortened version of Juniper. Plus, it's a tree! That's cool.

I think you should have a set of names ready, and decide after she's born which one fits her personality.

That said, I do like Bisquick, though. I think Lord is on to something.

In related news, if the were somehow wrong and it turns out their newborn was male, then ALL of those names would be bad hitting high school. All for their own special reasons!

I've always liked my Mom's Mom's name, Janis. Never liked it spelled "Janice," though.

I'm also quite fond of my fiancée's name, Allyson, with that spelling, although if you give your daughter a "normal" name spelled abnormally, she'll grow up hating you for it. In fact, it's probably a good idea in general to stay away from names that have multiple variants of spelling (Like Allison/Alison, Brandy/Brandi, Britney/Brittany, Clair/Claire/Clare, and so on).

If I had to pick a girl's name with which I don't have a personal connection, I'd probably say go with Virginia/Ginger. Don't know why, but I've always liked that name.
