Slow on the trigger! 28/11/07
I took a day off from work, as I'm still sick and I figured I could use the extra rest. Today I received three packages:
- OSX 10.5 Leopard (which was way smaller than the box Amazon shipped it in, FOR SHAME)
- two 1TB hard drives ($250 each at NewEgg!)
- six bottles of very nice wine that my parents sent me as a Hanukkah present. Yay!
qotd: What do you do when you're sick? I tend to wallow in self-pity and get caught up on TV shows. Also I drink a lot of tea.

Two 1TB harddrives for $250 each is incredible. Great find!
QOTD: I pretend I'm not sick, until I crash, then I generally sleep for at least twlelve hours or until better.

The installation is ongoing.
Step 1: do one last incremental backup of system drive to secondary drive (done)
Step 2: replace system drive with first 1TB drive (done)
Step 3: install OSX (in progress, "about 15 minutes" left)
Step 4: restore user data off of secondary drive
Step 5: replace secondary drive with second 1TB drive
Step 6: turn on Time Machine
Step 7: install all the apps I care to use, and look for replacements for ones which break in 10.5 (for example, my ancient copy of Photoshop 7, but now I have enough space for CS3 and then some). (this will take forever and a half)
I suppose I could have just replaced the secondary drive with the new primary drive and used the 'user migration tool' to copy stuff over but there's a lot of stuff on the backup drive I want to copy as well (like, I keep all my video there) so this way I can deal with that stuff more reasonably.

How much usable space do you get with a 1TB drive? I'm guessing it shows up as 976GB before formatting?
In related news, I wish drive manufacturers would be more honest and label their drives correctly. 1 GB=1024 MB, not 1000 MB. 1 TB = 1024 GB, not 1000 (incorrectly labeled) GB.

man, copying 300GB is slow. Who knew.
Of course it's a 1TB drive, or about 973GiB. The thing about the sizing is that it's not hard drive manufacturers' fault that OS vendors use GiB instead of GB or whatever. Computers are the only context where people think that things should be based on 2^10 instead of 10^3, and it's not even done consistently (1440KiB floppy disks being labeled as 1.44MB as the canonical example).
The OS really should report disk space in terms of MB/GB/TB instead of MiB/GiB/TiB. The order of magnitude is there for the human's benefit, not as a precise descriptor of how many bits a number takes up.
Meanwhile, 10.5 feels vaguely foreign, like speaking UK English after a lifetime of US English. Neither of the two dock modes is really quite right, and it's a bit annoying how if you pin the dock on the right side, the desktop gets shifted over to compensate (which didn't use to happen). I guess I'll have to get used to it on the bottom. Also the new non-reflection mode looks pretty weird, though I'm not sure if I hate it more than the reflection mode (which is easy enough to toggle with TinkerTool).
The new Mail, Finder, and iCal interfaces are hot, though, but I don't really like how Mail separates Inbox subfolders out now. At least you can move the account folder groups above the inbox group.

QOTD:
I don't really ever get sick, or at least to the point that I can't carry on with my daily routine. I'll get the standard sore throat here and there, but I just pop a Halls cough drop and go about my day.
Oh, by the way, if I start getting a sore throat, I drink some thera flue. That stuff works great.

You are a lucky man. I think the last time I vomited was ... about a month ago.sausage boy wrote:i haven't puked in 12 years
So ... I just finished my papers! I have three due tomorrow.
A 5 pager for Philosophy
A 6 pager for Rep Lit Works
A tiny little one for Effective writing.
They're all finished. The Effective Writing one is TERRIBLE. I don't think I've ever written anything more cliche. I'm really proud of the Rep Lit Works one, and the Philosophy one is okay. Doing a frenzy during the writing of the Rep Lit one was a bad idea. Oh yeah ... I have a test tomorrow. And I get to get up in less than 7 hours.
All I can say is dang it.
Except for ... good night.

I'm sick too. Today I tried to work from home, to avoid having to take time off. Normally I try to drink lots of water/juice/tea, and sleep a lot.
I haven't upgraded my main Mac to 10.5 yet. I'm concerned that too many things will break. Funny, I'm still using Photoshop 7 also. Good to know that that will break. I hadn't even considered that before. I did upgrade my MacBook, and I also think 10.5 is oddly different. I don't like the Dock's new look, or "Stacks". Otherwise it hasn't seemed to really do much for me, which is why I'm not in a hurry to upgrade my main machine.

I had a normal day.
qotd: When I get sick I still do normal stuff. I don't ever get sick enough to not be able to still do schoolwork and workwork. It's usually just a cold or something. I had strep throat a few weeks ago. I still did the normal routine. Except I didn't drink with friends or anything. I took it easy there.

Yeah, I'm also working on getting a copy of Photoshop CS3 so I can keep using it (I gave up on trying to find something more "in my price range" so to speak). So far I haven't discovered that much that really floors me, but I really want Time Machine instead of my crappy rsync-based daily script, and also I do appreciate the much better integration of the network with the Finder (especially the VERY nice VNC integration, which interoperates nicely with OSXvnc-server and Chicken of the VNC so it's not like I have to switch everything over to take advantage of that yet).Lunkhead wrote:I'm sick too. The main reason I decided to just take the plunge on my art/music system is that I was installing the new hard drives and figured I'd might as well take care of two annoying things at once. (I was originally just going to install 10.5 on my work laptop which I mostly just use as a glorified Emacs terminal.)
Oh, and another compelling thing about 10.5 is the network-distributed Spotlight, which is something I'd been hoping for since before Spotlight first came out.
